I first heard Irina Muresanu, maybe five years ago, with the Boston Trio in Jordan Hall at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. I was impressed from the very first note she played on her violin. Subsequently I heard her in a chamber music duo recital with pianist Ya-fei Chuang at the Harvard-Epworth Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I remember saying to myself, Wow, she has a big, warm sound! One day I would love to write a violin concerto for her! Last year I heard her play the Brahms and the Tchaikovsky violin concerti on separate occasions with the Lexington Symphony and the Boston Classical Orchestra. It was that wow factor again … When I proposed to write a violin concerto for Max Hobart and the Boston Civic Symphony Orchestra, he asked me who I would like to feature as the soloist. I said Irina Muresanu. Max said it was a fabulous choice since he has been thinking of engaging Irina to play with the Civic for some time. Over the past summer I indulged myself in a buying spree of scores and CD recordings of violin concerti. Many composers’ works stood out: concerti by Brahms, Mendelssohn, Sibelius, Stravinsky, Elgar, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Saint-Saëns, Dvorak, Paganini, Glazunov, Dohnanyi, Nielsen, Spohr, etc. And of course, I did not ignore the gems by Bach and Mozart! The listening to and research of all these concerti masterpieces were quite overwhelming, to say the least. So, by the time I was ready to begin work on my Concerto, I had to put all those scores and CDs aside and begin to find the music in my head. I must confess that it took a while. But eventually I found the seed that brought everything together. And within six weeks, between late September and early November, I completed the short score of the concerto. The orchestration took approximately ten days and the complete work was done on November 21st, 2009. My Violin Concerto, opus 129, is in two parts. Each part consists of a slow section that is followed by a fast one. Part I: Largo, Moderato, Allegro ma non troppo. Part II: Largo, Adagio, Prestissimo. Enjoy!! Performance Notes: Ornamentation is to be performed in a free manner, except when otherwise stated in the score. Program Notes: Scherzo and Trio, Nightmares in Dreamland, for Solo Violin that follows the Classical period form of a Minuet and Trio. It has the Romantic period spirit of a Scherzo and Trio, hence the title. It has the Romantic period ideal, in it being programmatic, hence the subtitle. And, it has a melodic as well as implied harmonic language that is a fusion of Classical and Jazz of the 20th and 21st centuries. The work tells a definitive tale, despite being in a strict form. It answers the question of what dreamland would sound like for a person when infected with nightmares. Be prepared to toss and turn, as we enter the human mind after it has had a long and hard morning, afternoon, and evening.

Esta pieza está inspirada en la Suche Malinche, uno de los personajes de “El Güegüense o Macho Ratón”, obra de teatro nicaragüense y además Patrimonio Oral e Inmaterial de la Humanidad. En dicha obra, el Güegüense convence al Gobernador Tastuanes (padre de la Suche Malinche) para que case a la muchacha con uno de sus hijos (Don Forcico). El Preludio de la Suche Malinche surge de la necesidad de empoderar a esta mujer, cuya función en El Güegüense es la de ser un instrumento para acceder al poder. Ni su voz ni su voluntad existen. Es por eso que en la pieza, La Suche (representada por la violinista) empieza a cuestionarse por su silencio, y le reza a Guachán (San Sebastián, santo patrono de Carazo); pero en vez del santo, se le aparece Quetzalcóatl, quien le da valor y fuerza. Poco a poco ella siente cómo surge su voz, alternada con vocales y sonidos reiterados, que se mezclan con un violín impetuoso, hasta que en ella se construye el habla y termina diciendo : “Ya neme nequi nitipampa” (Yo estoy aquí, defendiendo mi causa). ----------------------------------------------This piece is inspired by Suche Malinche, one of the characters of “El Güegüense o Macho Ratón”, a Nicaraguan play and also Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. In this play, the Güegüense convinces Governor Tastuanes (Suche Malinche’s father) to marry the girl to one of his sons (Don Forcico). The Suche Malinche Prelude arises from the need to empower this woman, whose function in El Güegüense is to be an instrument to gain access to power. Neither her voice nor her will exist. That is why in the piece, La Suche (represented by the violinist) begins to question her silence, and prays to Guachán (San Sebastián, patron saint of Carazo); but instead of the saint, Quetzalcóatl appears to her, giving her courage and strength. Little by little she feels how her voice emerges, alternating with vowels and reiterated sounds, which are mixed with an impetuous violin, until she builds her speech and ends up saying: “Ya neme nequi nitipampa” (I am here, defending my cause.).

Giant Steps - Transcribed solo ( starts to 2:54 ) by Katsumi WF violinist. Used the same note range as the Coltrane's Saxophone Solo sound and adjusted to violin note range that is possible to play by violin half position to 1st position only. ( But it's not for beginner! ) Some of the notations are written by #s with #chourds instead of the flat chords to make phrasing more comfortable for the violinists. Those are not the best way to write if I needed to follow the western classical musical theory. Although, I wrote that way for tons of reasons. Just discuss with your musicians or mentors and then find a better way for you.This music sheet might be used for understanding / learning the ideas of phrasing he improvised, not just for performing the same solo to show off! Corona Etude is a hopeful piece written during coronavirus lockdown. It uses rapid 2, 3 and 4-string crossings to create the sensation of multiple voices. The use of many open strings helps to create a full sound while being relatively easy to play. After players familiarize themselves with the notated version, they are encouraged to create their own realization using the sketch on the front cover. It has a folk-like feeling, while using a standard classical technique. It could be way to introduce students to the string crossings in solo Bach sonatas and partitas, and other standard literature. .
