Appalachia Waltz is a piece composed by Mark O?Connor for unaccompanied violin which gained fame as the title track from the album featuring O?Connor, Yo-Yo Ma, and Edgar Meyer. The Sony Classical release remained for many months in the top ten of Billboard Magazine?s Classical music chart. O?Connor originally composed the piece as a solo for unaccompanied violin in 1993 before he brought it to the trio when compiling material for their album. Here, adapted to viola, ?Appalachia Waltz? is very similar to the violin version O?Connor performs in his solo concerts. With the musical influences coming from Scandinavian and Appalachian folk fiddling, it is one of O?Connor?s most beautiful pieces. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels.

It has long been accepted pedagogical practice that, after first position, the next positions a violin or viola student learns are third and fifth positions. There is good reason for studying the odd-numbered positions first. The body of the and the crook of the neck provide solid reference points for finding these positions. Harmonically, first, third, and fifth positions outline the triad, the foundation of Western tonal music. The fingering for fifth position matches first position, making it easy to learn. It is unfortunate that this focus on third and fifth position has often been at the cost of any discussion of the even positions: 2, 4, 6, and 8. This is evident in the traditional etudes and study material available for violin and viola. With new tonal demands of twentieth and twenty-first century music, knowledge and familiarity with the entire finger board is essential.Like the relationship between first and fifth position, the same relationship can be found between second and sixth positions and fourth and eighth positions. We have chosen to introduce these positions together, with melodies that can be played in both positions. Also included are shifting exercises between the even-numbered positions. We hope students and teachers will find this material helpful.

Suite for Solo Viola consists of 3 varied movements. The 1st. movement is a reflective, nostalgic Prelude. This is followed by a Sarabande - a slow dance and finally an exciting Moto Perpetuo 3rd Movement. This work initially exploits the soulful character of the Viola whilst also covering the full range of the instrument in the 2nd. & 3rd. The later is a vibrant and Jubilant ending to the whole. First performed by Patrick Ireland. (c. 10 mins)Originally from Glasgow, Timothy studied at the Royal College of Music, London and the Banff Centre, Canada. He was the Pianist for the Isis Piano Trio and Ballet Creations and is now in demand as an accompanist and chamber musician having performed with artists such as Dame Sarah Connolly and Tasmin Little. He has toured widely internationally and has recorded for BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM as well as TV appearances in Russia and Egypt.
