Caprices for solo violin have a long tradition; the list of collections in which virtuoso violinist-composers archived testimonies of their virtuoso violin art ranges from Locatelli to Paganini, from Gaviniès to Dont. Among them is the French violinist Pierre Rode (1774-1839) who added his 24 Capricen in Form einer Etüde für Violine allein to this genre. Even today, they still form part of the indispensable repertoire of violin students, particularly since, notwithstanding the purely technical side, they are also attractive pieces of music. As a teacher at the famous Paris Conservatoire, Rode, together with Pierre Baillot and Rodolphe Kreutzer, laid the foundations for comprehensive violin didactics and methodology: the 24 Caprices are important contributions to this music-educational work. The present new edition is based on the first edition of Paris of 1820, providing the original score, especially two variants of fingering, a 'normal version', and a version specifically designed for small hands. Technical as well as musical challenges make Rode's Caprices a fascinating study and performance object.

Garth Knox is one of the most prominent violists of his generation, and as former long-time member of the Arditti Quartet he has developed and maintained a fondness of contemporary music. In the mean time, he gives concerts and teaches courses all over the world.
With 'Viola Spaces' he wants to make contemporary playing techniques accessible to advanced players. The pieces, or 'playing spaces', are true concert studies, each of them dealing with specific techniques such as harmonics, pizzicato (with 9 fingers!) or tremolos which are explained in great detail.
Another volume with modern playing techniques for two violas and a volume with variations on a piece by the French viola da gamba master Marin Marais for four violas are planned.

A set of intriguing, contrasting miniatures for unaccompanied viola. Aimed at higher level players, this piece is ideal for any concert or recital setting. The first in this set, from darkness, rising, is a lyric caprice which gradually moves from darker modes to brighter modes (locrian to lydian). The next selection, Eidólons, has a veiled, mysterious quality. In this piece, I explore variations based on rhythmic alteration. An eidólon is a spirit or phantasm; the term was a favorite of American poet Walt Whitman. The third entry, Homeostatic, is built upon a concept I refer to as biofeedback music. In this case, I took regularly-spaced readings of my pulse rate and blood oxygen saturation percentage and performed basic arithmetic operations on these figures, the results of which I used to determine a number of musical facets (most notably the essential constituents of the rhythmic gestures). The final piece, Sapta Bodhyanga, I built on a wedge concept (in this case, seven intervals, each becoming larger, ending with the octave). The number seven also features prominently in the design of the rhythmic motives (with chance procedures used in the deployment of these figures). Given the concentration on this number and the use of aleatoric methods, I titled this piece after the Zen Buddhist concept sapta-bodhyang, or seven degrees of enlightenment.

Fugue: Wear Pearls and Smile is, on the outset, a fast, rambunctious adventure for many voices playing at the same time. It was conceived as a pairing for the equally vivacious second symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven–his 250th birthday is this year–but can stand on its own as one of my hardest, most challenging works to cook up.This piece is dedicated to those forced to appear positive when internally they’re falling apart. The title is inspired by a quote that’s been with me for a while, Why is it that men can be bastards and women must wear pearls and smile? by Lynn Hecht Schafren, the celebrated American jurist famous for campaigning for gender equity in courts. I’m taking the quote out of its initial context, but the power of that quote, for me, exemplifies how hard it is to maintain a sense of emotional decorum and dignity when you’re authentically a hot mess. And what’s more of a musical hot mess than a fugue?There are two realities to this piece. I’ll quote Dmitri Shostakovich, from his autobiography: The rejoicing is forced, created under threat, […] It’s as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, ‘Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing,’ and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering ‘Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing.’ On the one hand, it is insincere happiness, cloying perhaps. But the other truth, I’ll quote Oscar Hammerstein II, from The King and I: While shivering in my shoes / I strike a careless pose / And whistle a happy tune / And no one ever knows, / I'm afraid. I forced myself, against all impulses of my current being, to forge happiness. This piece, with its origin being a mental puzzle (fugues are puzzles), it became a construct where I could lift myself up and regain a sense of purpose. Programme Notes: Icarus Also Flew takes its title from the first line of the poem Failing and Flying by Jack Gilbert. He is referring to the classical myth of Daedalus and Icarus, an inventive father and son who bravely escape from their imprisonment in a tower by collecting the disposed feathers of seabirds, then fashion wings out of them and fly away. While the story is often treated as a morality tale--listen to your elders, don’t get cocky like the young man, Icarus, who, in such an understandable state of elation, ascended too close to the sun thus causing the wings to melt and his tumbling to his Mediterranean death--what Jack Gilbert reminds us is how regardless of one’s failure, the sheer transcendental experience of mortal flight remains glorious and unforgettable. Icarus’s fall was not into a legacy of disdain and oblivion, but in truth, he had come to the end of his triumph. This piece was the first of a series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies--his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!--though they can all stand on their own on any program. The connection, in this case, is with his celebrated fifth symphony in C minor--the Fate symphony, as it is commonly known. I - La Violence (Violence) With some elements from Prokofiev's Sonata for 2 violins, this movement is about violence and it's many forms hence the title La violence. There is nothing nice about this movement. II - This movement is untitled as I did not wish impose a mental image upon the listener and performer. You'll hear the first fragment of Dies Irae that emerges from the shadows. This is the only happy movement. III - Angoisse (Agony) This is a harkening back to all the bad theory homework over the years in college. From the bad counterpoint to the solemn melody that appears later, this is a of a person who hides their pain away lest it spill out and cause horrendous repercussions. IV - La valse/devenir fou (Waltz/Going crazy) With elements of Ravel's La Valse and Weinberg's Cello Concerto, this movement represents a quick escalation of a deteriorating mental state hence the going crazy title. For a time things seem to dissipate only to come back even worse than before it crashes. For John Grigsby.
