The original version for violin dates from 1981, thus being one of the early works by the Israeli composer who teaches at Harvard University. About 35 years later, Chaya Czernowin wrote the arrangement for viola which was first performed by Maria Ritzenthaler at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis in 2015. In the same year, she composed another version for violoncello solo.

Caprices for solo violin have a long tradition; the list of collections in which virtuoso violinist-composers archived testimonies of their virtuoso violin art ranges from Locatelli to Paganini, from Gaviniès to Dont. Among them is the French violinist Pierre Rode (1774-1839) who added his 24 Capricen in Form einer Etüde für Violine allein to this genre. Even today, they still form part of the indispensable repertoire of violin students, particularly since, notwithstanding the purely technical side, they are also attractive pieces of music. As a teacher at the famous Paris Conservatoire, Rode, together with Pierre Baillot and Rodolphe Kreutzer, laid the foundations for comprehensive violin didactics and methodology: the 24 Caprices are important contributions to this music-educational work. The present new edition is based on the first edition of Paris of 1820, providing the original score, especially two variants of fingering, a 'normal version', and a version specifically designed for small hands. Technical as well as musical challenges make Rode's Caprices a fascinating study and performance object.

It has long been accepted pedagogical practice that, after first position, the next positions a violin or viola student learns are third and fifth positions. There is good reason for studying the odd-numbered positions first. The body of the and the crook of the neck provide solid reference points for finding these positions. Harmonically, first, third, and fifth positions outline the triad, the foundation of Western tonal music. The fingering for fifth position matches first position, making it easy to learn. It is unfortunate that this focus on third and fifth position has often been at the cost of any discussion of the even positions: 2, 4, 6, and 8. This is evident in the traditional etudes and study material available for violin and viola. With new tonal demands of twentieth and twenty-first century music, knowledge and familiarity with the entire finger board is essential.Like the relationship between first and fifth position, the same relationship can be found between second and sixth positions and fourth and eighth positions. First, this version is in A minor. I chose this key because it sits well on the viola. But this tune is traditionally in E minor - so this version won't work if you bring it to the local Irish session. Secondly, I made the decision not to include first and second endings, where the only change is the length of the final note because the beginning of the A section has a pickup. I'm only 62% sure of this... but, I mean, it's pretty much implied, isn't it? It looks so fussy and confusing if you don't read music regularly, and this version is not geared at strong readers. The purpose of this edition is more to support by-ear learners anyway.
