This score is based on the old British Carol "I saw three ships." There are seven variations preceding the fugue. After the theme has been stated, the first two variations extend the theme; the third variation introduces the pedals. The next three variations are in the style of Baroque genres: the fourth variation is a noel written as an homage to Daquin; the fifth variation is a figured chorale, in which the chorale Von Himmel hoch, da komm ich her makes its first appearance; and the sixth is a Handelian rigaudon. The seventh variation is a "carillion" in which Von Himmel hoch reappears. After a dramatic, dissonant chord, the score concludes with a chorale fugue during which Von Himmel hoch appears in the pedal. Starting with Advent\'s \"O Lord How Shall I Meet Thee\" (Valet will ich dir geben), continuing with Christmas favorites \"In the Bleak Midwinter\", \"Still, Still, Still\", and \"Angels We Have Heard on High\", an Epiphany standard \"As With Gladness Men of Old\" (Dix), it also includes a Christmas work for trombone (or trumpet) and organ, the peaceful \"Infant Holy, Infant Lowly\". All of these were written on a two manual instrument and are easily playable. The trombone work is aimed at a younger, less experienced musician, with a very supportive organ part. The choralepreludes in this volume combine traditional classical form with stilistic elementsof Celtic folk music such as dance rhythms, syncopation, and ornamental figuresthat give them a certain lightness.

Almost allchorals, almost all of which are ecumenical, were composed for practical use. Therefore,they are mostly kept quite short (about 1 min.) and quote the chorale melodycompletely as cantus firmus in the approximate singing tempo. Some preludes have a quasi baroque design, but most also have a certain Celtic flavor. Indications aboutstops have been omitted, the indications SW (Swell) and HW(Great) just indicatewhere the c. f. is to be emphasized. The preludes arefollowed by accompanying movements.
