Ukrainian-born composer Dimitry Bortniansky (1751-1825) wrote operas, piano sonatas, and songs, but is perhaps best-known for his a cappella choral works in Church Slavonic, including many which he called Sacred Concertos. The 24th of these is a setting of Psalm 121 (I will lift up my eyes to the hills, whence comes my help...), and its opening and closing sections, as arranged here, make an effective prelude and fugue for organ. Key: A minor. Duration: 4 minutes.

Theme and seven variations for organ, suitable for performance in church or recital hall. Contents/Durations:Theme: 1:15Canon: 2:06Fugue I: 2:29Fantasia: 2:09Trio: 1:55Fugue II:1:43Interlude/Double Fugue 4:51Meditation: 1:47Herzlich tut mich verlangen is a German hymn with lyrics written in 1599 by Christoph Knoll. It contains 11 stanzas and is known for its plaintive character.  The melody was adapted from a secular song by Hans Leo Hassler called Mein G'müt ist mir verwirret. The tune, Befiehl du deine Wege, first appeared in print in the 1601 Lustgarten Neuer Teutscher Gesäng.The melody is associated with the prayer for a blessed death, beginning Herzlich tut mich verlangen nach einem sel'gen End (I do desire dearly a blessed end). The hymn has been referenced in the works of composers such as J.S. Bach and Brahms, and it is also associated with the organ piece BWV 727. The title is sometimes confused with O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden, as the two melodies are occasionally interchangeable in hymnals from the time.

Published by Rebecca Maughan Cook (A0.908187). In 2021 I wrote this entry for an Organ Composition competition. We were required to use the pitches associated with RC MADER. I wrote this set of Miniatures exploring ideas associated with that. Movement 1 is a Fanfare and Hymn setting. Movement 2 is the only time the Pitches are played in entirety and I turned it into a Theme of Love. It's one of my favorite movements from this set. Movement 3 is a Blues with almost all the notes using the given pitches. Movement 4 is such a quirky little piece! It's a March and all the notes are from RC Mader. It was very fun to write. Movement 5 is a Toccata and in order to meet the requirement I placed some chords in inversion for the pedals and picked up the root on the LH. It's busy and beautiful. It's my other favorite movement. I'm uploading a midi recording of this. The first four movements are pretty accessible, but the 5th movement is more challenging. Have fun!

African Praise! is a joyous celebration at the organ with a driving energy through the whole piece. The A section was inspired by the exuberance of the Afro-Caribbean church choirs I have conducted. The B theme is based on 2 bars of a Ghana folk hymn which I set over a constantly pulsing drum beat in the pedals. It is ABA form with each section utilizing call and response. This piece will add life and energy to any service or concert. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face:) 4 pages; 2:10 minutes.

This is one of a suite of organ pieces composed by David W Solomons performed by David Carlston Williams for a CD in June 2015 The suggested order for this suite is: 1. Passacaglia: based on an ostinato passage in 3 time. The idea behind the passacaglia relates to the origin of the word, it is basically a gentle stroll down the street (pasar la calle in Spanish, which was converted into Passacaglia in Italian) 2. Dorina: a descriptive piece in Dorian mode based on a song about a cat, from the aptly named village of Chattevoix, who stalks, but never catches, a little bird. 3. Playtime: also about a cat, the composer's own cat who is playful and rushes around the house but occasionally stopping to pummel the soft furnishings. 4. Early Evening in Camden Town: a more serious and sad piece - in 3-3-2 time. It is an evocation of the poor folk in Camden and their dreams of what could be, if only….. It was originally a song, which the composer wrote when he was living in London, based on a poem by fellow Londoner Sandra Erös The streets are part of a toy town, waiting to be played with…. 5. It comes from the legend of Robin Hood, in which Robin meets the bishop of Hereford, who had hoped to get the better of him, but Robin prevails and forces him to dance. The clumsy attempts of the ungainly Bishop to obey Robin's commands cause great merriment among the merry men To quote our vicar, Rev Barbara, after the recital For me music paints a picture, and, for that, I have got this picture of someone going for a stroll in their village and then they came across a very old cat wandering down the street imaging it could catch birds but never catching them. And then it would lie down for a sleep and dream of the days when it was a kitten.... It was a very reflective programme and turns our mind about What for the Autumn, what do we need to do next.. it really did fit in with the mood of the year, as we turn towards building up the programme for next year... So thank you, it gave us time to reflect in a very beautiful manner.... This is one of a suite of organ pieces composed by David W Solomons performed by David Carlston Williams for a CD in June 2015 The suggested order for this suite is: 1. Passacaglia: based on an ostinato passage in 3 time. The idea behind the passacaglia relates to the origin of the word, it is basically a gentle stroll down the street (pasar la calle in Spanish, which was converted into Passacaglia in Italian) 2. Dorina: a descriptive piece in Dorian mode based on a song about a cat, from the aptly named village of Chattevoix, who stalks, but never catches, a little bird. 3. Playtime: also about a cat, the composer's own cat who is playful and rushes around the house but occasionally stopping to pummel the soft furnishings. 4. Early Evening in Camden Town: a more serious and sad piece - in 3-3-2 time. It is an evocation of the poor folk in Camden and their dreams of what could be, if only….. It was originally a song, which the composer wrote when he was living in London, based on a poem by fellow Londoner Sandra Erös The streets are part of a toy town, waiting to be played with…. 5. Pure energy. This tune is from a West Indian carol, so it has Christmas origins, but even if the lyrics are known they are generic enough that you could use this anytime of the year when you want to have fun! Contains 2 key changes, some dynamic echoes, but always with a driving island rhythm. Premiere Performance was at a presentation on Caribbean music, used as an example of typical Caribbean exuberance, structure and form, and Caribbean rhythms, including polyrhythms. Marked as Advanced Intermediate simply because some people have trouble with the rhythms; but otherwise, Early Intermediate. 4 page organ solo. (Apologies for the bad recording equipment; it was recorded on a million dollar pipe organ but I realize it doesn't sound like it.)
