This score is based on the old British Carol "I saw three ships." There are seven variations preceding the fugue. After the theme has been stated, the first two variations extend the theme; the third variation introduces the pedals. The next three variations are in the style of Baroque genres: the fourth variation is a noel written as an homage to Daquin; the fifth variation is a figured chorale, in which the chorale Von Himmel hoch, da komm ich her makes its first appearance; and the sixth is a Handelian rigaudon. The seventh variation is a "carillion" in which Von Himmel hoch reappears. After a dramatic, dissonant chord, the score concludes with a chorale fugue during which Von Himmel hoch appears in the pedal. Composed for and dedicated to David Higgs, in celebration of his twenty-five years of teaching at the Eastman School of Music. Duration: 6:45.

The melody cell of the first part of Elegy n.3 is mainly made up of a fifth and fourth descending leap supported by voices that proceed in descending chromatisms, amplifying the tension. The second part is formed by a chordal section with overlapping fifths and fourths that leads to a melody line with the same rhythmic sequence but supported by a vigorous chromatism. The third part uses the initial theme again only that it is treated in the opposite direction. I deliberately avoided indicating the choice of stops to use if the piece is played on the organ, thus leaving the performer free to choose. Despite this, it seemed appropriate to indicate the dynamics signs only as a point of reference, but obviously the performer is free to file the sound dynamics of the piece at will. Obviously, playing on the piano also requires the use of the resonance pedal that the performer will use at will.

Published by John Burkett (A0.1427990). This Prelude on the Christmas carol tune Christmas Song (There's a Song in the Air) is the first of two settings I have created based on this tune. This setting requires only a two-manual organ and is of moderate difficulty. Structurally, the piece begins with an introduction that makes use of the dotted eighth/sixteenth rhythm that pervades the tune itself. A fresh harmonization of the first two phrases of the tune follows. They are succeeded in turn by an interlude similar to the introduction. A harmonization of the third and fourth phrases of the tune is then presented. A shorter interlude leads to a varied restatement of the last phrase, itself followed by a brief postlude, again employing the aforementioned dotted rhythm. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search he Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

UPC: 749193016121.When In Our Music God Is Glorified is an arrangement of the tune Engelberg that may be played by handbells alone, or in conjunction with organ, brass, timpani, SATB choir, and congregation. This glorious festival hymn arrangement begins with a fanfare introduction, followed by a straightforward setting of the first verse sung in unison. The second verse features the choir in four parts, accompanied by the bells and organ only. The brass and timpani join in on the third verse, which features a malleted or plucked bass line in the handbells, creating a march-like feel. A fanfare interlude precedes the majestic fourth verse, which features a soaring soprano descant, and a brief choral Amen concludes the arrangement. This hymn arrangement is perfect for worship, concert, or festival use.

Now offering 25% off my SMP price at MatthewAlanEdwards.com/op-7 !Canzona alla terza Verbum supernum prodiens was composed late one night after I was inspired by the chant melody as found in the Hymnal 1982, hymn 63. Rather than compose on the computer as I usually do, I wrote by hand as I determined the best four-part canonic treatment for each of the phrases of the chant. Composing this was akin to assembling a puzzle, both in mindset (this note fits best here) and addictive quality (need to finish this now!). Originally conceived as a short organ piece, I quickly chose to add the English text from the Hymnal 1982 then text directly from the Liber Usualis, a Catholic book of Gregorian chants commonly used until the reforms of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II). This piece is similar in style to an Italian Renaissance canzona or early German Baroque kanon. It should be performed with performance practice of those eras in mind, including lifts after dotted notes, metric accents, and minimal vibrato, especially at cadences. It may be performed in alternatum with one of the choral versions (SATB English, SATB Latin, SSA/TTB Latin, or SSA/TTB English) or with a soloist(s) on the chant or as an organ solo. I have provided the first line of chant below and all six verses in Latin with translations on the next page. The SSA Latin version was adapted from the original SATB version for the women of the Hillcrest High School choral program under the direction of Dr. Khristi Motley in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It reduces the original four-voice setting to three voices without sacrificing any canonic entrances. Either the two-staff or single-staff version may be performed by solo organ. In the single-staff version, stem direction decisions were made primarily for readability, not to show voice leading. Refer to the four-part, two-staff version for voice leading questions.Also available as SSA/TTB in Latin or English. SATB Latin/English versions coming soon!

Partita on O Heiland, reiß die Himmel auf (2021) was written for organist Philip Hartmann in celebration of the dedication of the new choir organ in Ulm Cathedral, Ulm Germany. The instrument was built in 2021 by Orgelbau Kuhn of Switzerland. The partita is based on a familiar German Advent chorale, O Savior, tear open the heavens, a text attributed to Frederick Spee (published 1622) with an anonymous tune, perhaps written for the text. The partita is in four movement: Fanfare, Ostinato, Aria, and Finale.

My Prelude on the Christmas carol tune Mendelssohn (Hark! the Herald Angels Sing) opens with a brief introduction based on the first measure of the third phrase of the tune. An original harmonization of the entire tune follows, anchored by a repetitive rhythmic pattern of alternating rests and chords. An interlude ensues, which is a rhythmically intensified reworking of the initial introduction. Then the first phrase of the tune sounds in a new key in the pedal bass, accompanied by parallel triads in the hands. Another interlude follows, also based on parallel triads, and leading to a statement in the pedals of the second phrase of the tune. Slightly modified versions of the third and fourth phrases with varied accompaniments lead to a strong cadence. The final section follows, beginning with an extended introduction that increases the rhythmic pace to the point where a constant stream of rapidly moving sixteenth notes drives forward to the final statement of the carol tune, and lends a sense of urgency as the flow continues underneath the melody. The tempo slows slightly during a brief postlude in which the state trumpet reiterates a rhythmic pattern heard earlier. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

In the fall of 2013 my friend and colleague, Paulius Grigonis who is the organist at St Joseph church here in Vilnius was preparing to play a recital at Vilnius Cathedral around Christmas time. He approached me asking for advice about the pieces he could be playing.I offered him to compose a set of 6 variations on the famous Christmas tune Adeste fideles and he agreed too much hesitation (too bad).I started working on the composition but got stuck at the end of the 5th variation. I used major and minor chords only. My goal was to create something colorful and modern and yet understandable to the listener.Because of these simple chords the harmonies are very clear and transparent. What makes it sound modern though is that I avoid traditional chordal progressions of the perfect fourth and perfect fifth. This would imply tonic-dominant, dominant-tonic, tonic-subdominant, subdominant-tonic relationship.But I didn't want this. I wanted to surprise my audience and my friend Paulius. So I chose all kinds of progressions - minor and major seconds, minor and major thirds, even a tritone to keep it fresh.However, the result was too difficult to play for Paulius on a short notice and I got side-tracked with other projects. Although the idea of completing the variations never left me.So last weekend I sat down and added the last variation with a CODA.I hope you'll enjoy this piece which is dedicated to Paulius.8 pages, PDF score.
