Also known as Luther's Cradle Hymn (tune Mueller), this American Christmas carol melody is much admired. This new arrangement for organ sees the melody in the right hand with gentle 'cradle rocking' left hand 8th notes above the held pedal notes anchoring the slow moving harmony. The end result is a gentle, reflective and musically satisfying arrangement of a much loved Christmas carol. Use an expressive 8' stop to solo the melody and balance it against an open 8' flute (or 8' and 4' flutes if the 8' is too quiet). Couple the left hand to a quiet 16' Pedal stop. It features two distinctive crescendos, the second one should lead to a full organ sound. I had the idea of that motif two years ago and just took notes of the first five or six measures. Some weeks ago I ran into these notes once again after I had forgotton them completely. Then in one creative evening I was able to write the whole piece. Never had been more in such a creative flow state of mind before. I hope this piece will find its audience. I love it very, very much.I created a video on YouTube if you want to see which stops I used to create the crescendos. But feel free to find your own perspective on registrations.Â

Toccata & Fugue for Organ (2018)Composed by Aris AntoniadesRunning time: approx. 7' 50'' Writing for Organ always seemed like a very distant dream for me. Born and raised in Cyprus, an isolated Mediterranean island-state in Europe where the religious musical tradition (Greek Orthodox Christianity) relies solely on voices (no instruments used during services), I never had access to an Organ. In fact, to the best of my knowledge, there’s not a single Organ in my entire country. The first time I ever saw one was during my college years in New York – and it was love at first sight! I was fascinated by its sound capabilities, its mechanism, and the sheer skill required to play it. You can, therefore, understand how thrilled I am to have had the opportunity to write for this great instrument. I would like to sincerely thank Shannon Murphy and Austin Philemon for believing in my work, and for commissioning this piece. Both the Toccata and the Fugue are based on the same (but altered) motivic materials. The Toccata is a piece that was inspired by the idea that life is a continuous marathon, represented by the ‘mechanical’ sixteenth-note ostinato figure which never stops – despite the contrapuntal obstacles that are thrown within its path. The motive, however, does transform and adapt along the way, in order to make the best of the situation. The Fugue, on the other hand, represents the cerebral aspect of life: the concept of choices. The ostinato motive of the Toccata has now morphed into the subject of the Fugue, which will be attacked by some violent chromatic enemies. For reference, the lyrics are included with a free translation. We have taken a more legato approach to the material than is the Baroque performance practice. It is in the familiar A-B-A structure, with the B-section optional. A simple pedal part is added for easy accessibility.

Published by Rebecca Maughan Cook (A0.908187). In 2021 I wrote this entry for an Organ Composition competition. We were required to use the pitches associated with RC MADER. I wrote this set of Miniatures exploring ideas associated with that. Movement 1 is a Fanfare and Hymn setting. Movement 2 is the only time the Pitches are played in entirety and I turned it into a Theme of Love. It's one of my favorite movements from this set. Movement 3 is a Blues with almost all the notes using the given pitches. Movement 4 is such a quirky little piece! It's a March and all the notes are from RC Mader. It was very fun to write. Movement 5 is a Toccata and in order to meet the requirement I placed some chords in inversion for the pedals and picked up the root on the LH. It's busy and beautiful. It's my other favorite movement. I'm uploading a midi recording of this. The first four movements are pretty accessible, but the 5th movement is more challenging. Have fun!
