Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534348). David Hurd was born in Brooklyn, New York, on 27 January 1950. Prior to his under-graduate studies at Oberlin College, he attended both the High School of Music and Art and the Juilliard School. Upon graduation from Oberlin in 1971 (Mus.B.), he was appointed Assistant Organist of Trinity Parish in lower Manhattan where he served under the direction of Larry King. He was appointed to the faculty of Duke University in 1972 concurrent with graduate studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. In 1973 he returned to New York as Organist and Music Director at the Chapel of the Intercession, a position he retained until 1978 when he was named Composer in Residence for a season. In 1976 he was appointed to the faculty of The General Theological Seminary in New York City where he is presently Professor of Church Music and Organist. In addition, has served as Director of Music at All Saints Church, New York City, from 1985 to 1997 and is currently Director of Music at The Church of the Holy Apostles. In 1977 he was awarded first prizes both in organ playing and in improvisation at the International Congress of Organists. He has concertized throughout North America since that time under the representation of Phillip Truckenbrod. He has performed both at National and Regional Conventions of the American Guild of Organists. In 1981 he was invited to perform at the Internationaal Orgelfestival Haarlem, meeting in Gouda, the Netherlands, during which he received the diploma for improvisation of the Stichting Internationaal Orgelconcours. His principal organ teachers were Bronson Ragan, Garth Peacock, and Arthur Poister. In 2009, Dr. Hurd was named the 15th Distinguished Composer of the American Organ Guild. Other composers who have received this award include Virgil Thomson, Ned Rorem, Daniel Pinkham, Conrad Susa, William Bolcom and Dominick Argento. Dr. Hurd will be honored at a special concert during the 2010 AGO convention which will feature a newly commissioned work. He has received many commissions for choral, organ, and instrumental works, and has composed much liturgical music. Among his published works are organ pieces, choral works and many original hymn settings. His liturgical compositions and arrangements are also found in several major hymnals. He served on the Standing Commission on Church Music of the Episcopal Church from 1976 to 1985. He has been a visiting lecturer at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music and a visiting professor at the Yale School of Music. In 1987 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Music, honoris causa, by the Berkeley Divinity School at Yale. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534346). David Hurd was born in Brooklyn, New York, on 27 January 1950. Prior to his under-graduate studies at Oberlin College, he attended both the High School of Music and Art and the Juilliard School. Upon graduation from Oberlin in 1971 (Mus.B.), he was appointed Assistant Organist of Trinity Parish in lower Manhattan where he served under the direction of Larry King. He was appointed to the faculty of Duke University in 1972 concurrent with graduate studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. In 1973 he returned to New York as Organist and Music Director at the Chapel of the Intercession, a position he retained until 1978 when he was named Composer in Residence for a season. In 1976 he was appointed to the faculty of The General Theological Seminary in New York City where he is presently Professor of Church Music and Organist. In addition, has served as Director of Music at All Saints Church, New York City, from 1985 to 1997 and is currently Director of Music at The Church of the Holy Apostles. In 1977 he was awarded first prizes both in organ playing and in improvisation at the International Congress of Organists. He has concertized throughout North America since that time under the representation of Phillip Truckenbrod. He has performed both at National and Regional Conventions of the American Guild of Organists. In 1981 he was invited to perform at the Internationaal Orgelfestival Haarlem, meeting in Gouda, the Netherlands, during which he received the diploma for improvisation of the Stichting Internationaal Orgelconcours. His principal organ teachers were Bronson Ragan, Garth Peacock, and Arthur Poister. In 2009, Dr. Hurd was named the 15th Distinguished Composer of the American Organ Guild. Other composers who have received this award include Virgil Thomson, Ned Rorem, Daniel Pinkham, Conrad Susa, William Bolcom and Dominick Argento. Dr. Hurd will be honored at a special concert during the 2010 AGO convention which will feature a newly commissioned work. He has received many commissions for choral, organ, and instrumental works, and has composed much liturgical music. Among his published works are organ pieces, choral works and many original hymn settings. His liturgical compositions and arrangements are also found in several major hymnals. He served on the Standing Commission on Church Music of the Episcopal Church from 1976 to 1985. He has been a visiting lecturer at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music and a visiting professor at the Yale School of Music. In 1987 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Music, honoris causa, by the Berkeley Divinity School at Yale. The following year he received two honorary degrees; the Doctor of Sacred Music from The Church Divinity School of the Pacific, Berkeley, California, and the Doctor of Humane Letters from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, Evanston, Illinois.

Key: E flat major.The American musical patrons Mildred and Robert Wood Bliss were considering which distinguished composer to commission to create a work in celebration of their 30th wedding anniversary in 1938. The couple had made the acquaintance of Igor Stravinsky in April the preceding year at the première of his ballet Jeu de Cartes in New York and had subsequently invited the composer to their country home ’Dumbarton Oaks’ in Washington D.C. to talk about a new composition. Stravinsky only just managed to complete the work in time for the anniversary celebrations: its date of completion was also the date of its first performance. For his classically styled three-movement work, he selected the title Concerto in E flat, adding the subtitle Dumbarton Oaks as a dedication. The structure of the work references the concerto grosso: it features a soloist ensemble which unites in the tutti sequences but also plays in concertino groups during the solo episodes. Broken chordal structures characterise the central movement whereas the outer movements are distinguished through their use of fugato. Dumbarton Oaks went on to become one of Stravinsky’s most successful works, performed widely and delighting Mildred Bliss so much that she immediately issued another commission, for the Symphony in C. Its composer’s very public commitment to American cultural life helped pave the way for Stravinsky’s emigration to the USA in 1945. As early as 1952 Leif Thybo created an arrangement for organ which Stravinsky probably did not know at the time of his life.Inspired by Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, Igor Stravinsky’s three-movement concerto ‘Dumbarton Oaks’ is a musical monument to two major American patrons: Mildred and Robert Woods Bliss commissioned this work to mark the 30th anniversary of their wedding. It was performed for the first time at a private celebration at their country house Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C. under the direction of Nadia Boulanger in 1938. The composer is grateful to his cousin, Kenneth Bayliss for advice on the registration.

She visited Vilnius and played the organ at Vinius University St John's church last year.Although this Gradual is written in the 7th mode, to make it more colorful, I often changed and transposed the mode throughout the piece.It's a free paraphrase of Gregorian chant. The title “Litanies†obviously alludes to Jehan Alain's piece of the same name, written for organ in 1937. Inspired by this outstanding and unique composition, I had the idea, some 20 years ago, to create a piece of music based on a theme resembling a litany, too (without pretending, of course, that I would be able to equal in any way Alain's masterful quality as a composer). The main theme was notated quickly, but in the years since then, many variants and secondary themes that came to my mind did not satisfy me. Thus, it took a very long time and many ample interruptions before in this summer, with some new ideas everything fell into place as if by magic.There also exists a version of this piece for saxophone and organ (op. 3a).

The composition was written in the early years succeeding Vatican II (October 11, 1962 – December 8, 1965), a time of creative freedom. The language is period specific to that time, yet the music is universal.Rehearsal recommendation:The verse text is notated in consistent eighth-notes.
