In his 'Art of Fugue' Bach himself introduced a theme based on the four letters of his name: the notes we know as Bb A C B correspond to the German note names B A C H. Since that time, many composers have expressed their admiration for incomparable master by writing their own pieces of music on this theme. The work based on this theme by Franz Liszt is without any doubt the most important of them all - indeed, it represents a major landmark in the whole of the organ repertoire. It was composed in 1855 and given its first performance in the cathedral of Merseburg by Alexander Winterberger, to whom the work was dedicated. Liszt produced a second version of the work in 1869/70 and in 1870 he also wrote a piano transcription. It was a pity that the organist should not be able to use the ideas with which Liszt subsequently enriched his own adaptation. That is why, without adding anything that was not written by Liszt himself, Guillou has incorporated everything contained in the organ composition and the piano transcription in this 'syncretic' version of the work.

Was lebet, was schwebet (composed 2021, duration ca. 5’) is less a chorale prelude, and more a prelude and fugue. The prelude is a free fantasy based mostly on the opening notes of the hymn tune. It alternates short pedal solos with showy figures in the manuals. The fugue is based on the first six measures of the hymn tune, and thoroughly investigates the subject. It concludes in a brief flourish, reminiscent of the opening fantasia. A final fugato presents the entire hymn tune, in augmentation, beginning in the bass (on the pedals) and moving to the soprano. The piece is joyful and exuberant from beginning to end.Technical note: despite the extensive counterpoint and manual flourishes, this piece is quite approachable, being easier, on the whole, than a typical Bach prelude and fugue.

The pedal exercises at the beginning are fundamental and should be practiced in all keys with gradually increasing tempo. The structure of this method is based on the increasing polyphony: two-part pieces are followed by three-and multi-part pieces. Studying the strict structure of the polyphonic compositions, getting a feel of the liveliness of these parts, their coming, going and returning, all this, with the knowledge of harmonic form and architectonic values, provides the essential background for the correct interpretation of polyphonic music, especially of the fugue. The most important musical forms have been used to illustrate the various possibilities of registration and its relationship to style (colourful, solo and smooth playing).Progress within this method is made in a winding pattern, i.e. by falling frequently back on earlier aspects, through the juxtaposition of special stylistic and formal features, in order to consolidate them or add to variety. It is very important that the evolution of organ music from vocal music should be made clear to the student the very beginning, both musically and intellectually. He will be shown the technical evolution of organ music over the centuries and thus be prepared for a really artistic performance and interpretation of old and new works on his instrument, especially for the incomparable art of our great Johann Sebastian Bach.Wer nach dieser Schule das Orgelspiel erlernen will, muss schon eine gewisse technische Fertigkeit auf dem Klavier besitzen. The Scherzo explores a variety of sections that have their own character. The first section is written in a North German toccata style where the opening measures are treated in a canonic manner and played in a series of thirds and sixths against the main theme stated in the pedal division; this compositional approach is somewhat reminiscent of the organ compositions of Dietrich Buxtehude (Prelude and Fugue in G Minor BUXWV 149). The second section is contrapuntal in nature and depicts a humorous moment; that moment may depict a comedy show or a circus event at a fair. Following that section is the recurrence of the main theme of the first movement. The fourth section is quiet in sound intensity and is the most chromatically oriented than other parts. Following that is a fugue, derived from the main theme of the first movement, and a transitional passage leading back to the recurring main theme. The work concludes triumphantly in the key of G Major. The Scherzo requires attention to articulation, phrasing and timing. This work is suitable for educational and recital uses: it introduces organ students to major works of Buxtehude and Johann S. It contains 11 stanzas and is known for its plaintive character.  The melody was adapted from a secular song by Hans Leo Hassler called Mein G'müt ist mir verwirret. The tune, Befiehl du deine Wege, first appeared in print in the 1601 Lustgarten Neuer Teutscher Gesäng.The melody is associated with the prayer for a blessed death, beginning Herzlich tut mich verlangen nach einem sel'gen End (I do desire dearly a blessed end). The hymn has been referenced in the works of composers such as J.S. Bach and Brahms, and it is also associated with the organ piece BWV 727. I composed it under the impression of the organ works of Bach, Buxtehude and Johann Peter Kellner.This work was composed for Reformation Day, so it has the melody of the chorale Ein feste Burg as its pivot.Since harmonies became more colourful after the Baroque period, I have included a lot of chromaticism in this work.This piece is technically extremely demanding, both the manual part and the pedal, which is treated as an absolutely equal voice.The voices are very dense, so that they are not all perceptible at first hearing. The decisive thing in playing is that the result is something like the one in my recording. It is not necessary to play all the voices, or the spacing of the voices in the right hand can be made more tangible by using the respective octaves.I have attached a musical example in which I play the composition on the organ of the Petrikirche in Erfurt (Thuringia).

Heinrich Nicolaus [Nikolaus, Nicholas] Gerber was a German organist and composer. He matriculated as a law student at the University of Leipzig on May 8, 1724, and towards the end of the same year became a pupil of J.S. Bach. In 1731 he was appointed court organist to the Prince of Schwarzburg at Sondershausen, a post in which, upon his death, he was succeeded by his son, the music lexicographer Ernst Ludwig Gerber (1746-1819). E.L. Gerber's dictionary of musicians (Leipzig, 1790-1792; revised edition, 1812-1814) contains a vivid account of his father's tuition under J.S. Bach. Numerous keyboard works by J.S. Bach survive in copies made by Heinrich Nicolaus Gerber during his Leipzig years (1724-1727), including the Inventions and Sinfonias (BWV 772-801), the French Suites (BWV 812-817), English Suites Nos. 1, 3, 5, and 6 (BWV 816, 818, 810, 811), the first two Preludes and Fugues from The Well-tempered Clavier Part 1 (BWV 846-847), and some miscellaneous works (BWV 818, BWV 819, BWV 914, and BWV 996).
