Sacrificium was commissioned by the St Albans International Organ Festival for what has become one of the most influential organ competitions in the world. It is a demanding 8 minute work that will challenge performers with an abundance of contrasting material whilst still leaving space for individual interpretation. Casken refers to the story of Alban who sacrificed his life to save another Christian thereby becoming the first British Martyr in his programme note and more specifically the act of exchanging cloaks and deception which led to Alban's execution. This idea of taking on a new appearance is apparent in the music as recurring themes undergo transformations, gradually becoming absorbed into new musical textures.

Nel comporre la musica ho tenuto conto della suddivisione data da Dante alla Cantica, pertanto è presente l’Antipurgatorio, il Purgatorio con le sette cornici ed il Paradiso terrestre. Rispetto alla prima Cantica, il Purgatorio presenta un'atmosfera decisamente meno cupa, più rilassata e serena che si manifesta fin dal primo Canto, all'arrivo di Dante e Virgilio sulla spiaggia nei minuti che precedono l'alba, la mattina della domenica di Pasqua. Se nel comporre la musica dell'Inferno lo stile era spesso aspro e duro, adeguato alla rappresentazione del regno del dolore, quello della seconda Cantica è di tono più leggero ed elegiaco, ovviamente questa leggerezza non è sinonimo di facilità di linguaggio o di esecuzione. Nella terza, quarta, quinta e sesta cornice ho usato gli stessi temi dell’Inferno riferiti alle omologhe pene, ma rielaborandoli con armonie e strutture diverse rendendoli meno scuri e più rasserenanti. Mentre per le restanti parti lo sviluppo tematico è stato concepito completamente con idee nuove. Unica eccezione riguarda l’ultimo brano, il Paradiso terrestre, dove oltre al tema concepito, verso la conclusione del brano e precisamente nelle ultime cinque battute, ho introdotto il tema di un noto corale protestante utilizzato anche dalla chiesa latina dal titolo: “Noi canteremo Gloria a Teâ€. Nella partitura ho indicato anche la scelta dei registri e la dinamica la quale indicazione o suggerimento non risulta vincolante. Pertanto ciò non vieta che l’esecutore attraverso il suo buon gusto possa apportare delle modifiche nella scelta dei registri in considerazione anche dell’organo dove andrà ad eseguire la composizione. La gestazione dell’intera Cantica è durata all’incirca 7 mesi. Le prime battute le ho scritte il 13 marzo del 2022 mentre la fine della composizione ha visto la luce il 22 novembre dello stesso anno. Il Purgatorio chiude il ciclo compositivo organistico dedicato alla Divina Commedia dantesca, iniziato nel 2020 con il Paradiso per poi proseguire nel 2021 con la stesura dell’Inferno. Tre anni di intenso lavoro cercando di poter far “parlare†i brani all’ascoltatore in maniera diretta, curandone il suono che anteponendosi alla tecnica alimentano l’anima. Si tratta di musica autenticamente semplice, ma non banale, in quanto penso che la comunicazione diretta con l’ascoltatore si ottiene solo con la semplicità che è molto più “spinosa†del tecnicamente difficile e veloce. Ma soprattutto, in questa semplicità “spinosa†io ci metto il cuore e la mia mente.

He was born in Speinshart, some 150 km from Nuremberg, but spent most of his life in Augsburg, where he worked as cathedral organist for two years. His only surviving music is a 1693 collection, Ars Magna Consoni et Dissoni, which includes toccatas, Magnificat versets and variations in south German style. Speth was born in Speinshart, Bavaria, to teacher Heinrich Speth and his wife Margareta (née Vichtl). Past scholars established that Speth must have received music lessons from the abbot of the Premonstratensian monastery at Speinshart, one Dominikus Lieblein, however, this has recently been disproven. Nothing is known about his life before 1692, when he applied for the position of organist of Augsburg Cathedral. The application, which contained Speth's compositions, was accepted, and he was appointed organist on 4 November 1692. The music he supplied with the application was published the next year in Augsburg as Ars magna Consoni et Dissoni. In the files of the cathedral administration there is a note from 1705 showing that Speth had also to work in the office of the cathedral chapter. The exact date of Speth's death is unknown, but there is a document that shows that in 1719, he still lived with his wife and a maidservant in Augsburg. The composer's only surviving work is the collection published in 1693 in Augsburg, Ars magna Consoni et Dissoni. The title may be a reference to Athanasius Kircher's famous book, Musurgia universalis, sive ars magna consoni et dissoni (1650). An early description of the work was included by Johann Gottfried Walther in his Musikalisches Lexicon; Walther claimed Speth only compiled the pieces but did not compose. This hypothesis is now generally considered false. Ars Magna contains music intended for organ or clavichord: 10 toccatas (subtitled Musicalische Blumen-Felder), 8 Magnificat settings, and three variation sets. The music has clearly traceable Italian influences, with direct borrowings: one of the variation sets is built on a theme by Bernardo Pasquini, there is also a passage from Bernardo Storace in the Spangioletta variation set, and a verset by Alessandro Poglietti (quinti toni no. 3). The influence of contemporary southern organists is also apparent, particularly that of Georg Muffat and Johann Caspar Ferdinand Fischer. The toccatas are unusually short for the genre; most consist of three (toccata-fugue-toccata) sections. There are some interesting features such as dynamic indications in Toccata quarta. The Magnificat settings are, like similar pieces by Johann Kaspar Kerll and others, short versets for alternatim practice.

Duration: 8 - 16 minutes, 8 pp. Description: The graphic nature of this set of short pieces is designed to elicit cooperative creativity from the performer. With the exception of the last piece — the Chorale — the unorthodox notation is negotiable and open to alteration in consideration of the performer’s inclination and the instrument’s possibilities. The performer may take a highly faithful approach to realizing the score, or consider the Études as models for improvisation. Études II and IV, for example, ask the performer to continue to improvise in like manner, yet map out a clear design for the music. The degree of freedom is considerably more constrained as regards the final Chorale. The pitches, rhythm, length, form are much more specific in this case, although the performer does have great latitude (within suggested guidelines) in choosing registration. The music is generally scored on only two staves. Nonetheless, three manuals are requested for the realization of the Chorale. Pedal keyboard is recommended but not essential. The Pedal is particularly useful in realizing Études I and IV. Wedges and/or weights are necessary for Études III, and may be a useful substitute for the Pedal in Études I and IV. In medieval times much was made of things like numerology and words, and one day it was discovered that Ave (Hail) spelled backwards was Eva (an archaic spelling of Eve). Thus Ave Eva was Hail, Eve! and Mary was seen as a type of Eve. In other words, Ave Eva read the same forwards and backwards, giving us Hail Mary in both directions. This was seen as a miraculous sign and songs and poems were written about it. The piece given here is my original work for pipe organ, and following the lead of the title and history, it gives the descending figure F-E-D to provide the thematic material, developing into a canon-like style, then reverses the figure later to an ascending D-E-F, eventually playfully mixing both versions of the theme before exploding into an exciting end. The work itself is relatively easy to perform, with perhaps the exception of the duple-over-triplets passage near the end which may require a little more attention than the rest of the piece. For clarity of the lines I have suggested a Principal Chorus, with some contrast provided by passages using Flutes and soft Strings. Thank you for performing this work, and God bless!
