Written in a style reminiscent to the fugues of J. S. Bach and Palestrina, this work is educational in that it explores how the main theme and the second theme are treated. The devices used include retrograde, inversion, augmented versions, and the alternation between subject and real answer. Fugue in D Major, being a majestic and uplifting in character, is suitable for memorial services, postludes, and for other occasions. In performing the work, the principal chorus would be a good choice of organ registration for the great division and a quieter registration for the swell or choir division. As the piece progresses towards the end, reed stops may be added to bring brilliance to the work.

Nel comporre la musica ho tenuto conto della suddivisione data da Dante alla Cantica, pertanto è presente l’Antipurgatorio, il Purgatorio con le sette cornici ed il Paradiso terrestre. Rispetto alla prima Cantica, il Purgatorio presenta un'atmosfera decisamente meno cupa, più rilassata e serena che si manifesta fin dal primo Canto, all'arrivo di Dante e Virgilio sulla spiaggia nei minuti che precedono l'alba, la mattina della domenica di Pasqua. Se nel comporre la musica dell'Inferno lo stile era spesso aspro e duro, adeguato alla rappresentazione del regno del dolore, quello della seconda Cantica è di tono più leggero ed elegiaco, ovviamente questa leggerezza non è sinonimo di facilità di linguaggio o di esecuzione. Nella terza, quarta, quinta e sesta cornice ho usato gli stessi temi dell’Inferno riferiti alle omologhe pene, ma rielaborandoli con armonie e strutture diverse rendendoli meno scuri e più rasserenanti. Mentre per le restanti parti lo sviluppo tematico è stato concepito completamente con idee nuove. Unica eccezione riguarda l’ultimo brano, il Paradiso terrestre, dove oltre al tema concepito, verso la conclusione del brano e precisamente nelle ultime cinque battute, ho introdotto il tema di un noto corale protestante utilizzato anche dalla chiesa latina dal titolo: “Noi canteremo Gloria a Teâ€. Nella partitura ho indicato anche la scelta dei registri e la dinamica la quale indicazione o suggerimento non risulta vincolante. Pertanto ciò non vieta che l’esecutore attraverso il suo buon gusto possa apportare delle modifiche nella scelta dei registri in considerazione anche dell’organo dove andrà ad eseguire la composizione. La gestazione dell’intera Cantica è durata all’incirca 7 mesi. Le prime battute le ho scritte il 13 marzo del 2022 mentre la fine della composizione ha visto la luce il 22 novembre dello stesso anno. Il Purgatorio chiude il ciclo compositivo organistico dedicato alla Divina Commedia dantesca, iniziato nel 2020 con il Paradiso per poi proseguire nel 2021 con la stesura dell’Inferno. Tre anni di intenso lavoro cercando di poter far “parlare†i brani all’ascoltatore in maniera diretta, curandone il suono che anteponendosi alla tecnica alimentano l’anima. Si tratta di musica autenticamente semplice, ma non banale, in quanto penso che la comunicazione diretta con l’ascoltatore si ottiene solo con la semplicità che è molto più “spinosa†del tecnicamente difficile e veloce. Ma soprattutto, in questa semplicità “spinosa†io ci metto il cuore e la mia mente.

Sister Mary Hueller (1921-2017), DMA from the Eastman School of Music, colleague of Sr. Theophane Hytrek OSF, was professor of organ, piano, and liturgical music at Alverno College (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) throughout her professional career. At various times Sister Mary chaired the Fine Arts Division, coordinated the Music Department, and served on many college committees. After Sr. Theophane Hytrek's passing in 1992, Sr. Mary succeeded her as organist at St. Joseph Chapel for several decades.  “Tribute†was written in response to Sr. Theophane Hytrek’s choral compostion  “Canticle of the Creatures†(SSAA) sung by the School Sisters of St. Francis choirs regularly for community celebrations since it was written in 1949. The choral composition will soon be published in both SSAA and SATB arrangements.“Tribute†is of intermediate difficulty but has a challenging pedal part. At the time of composition Sr. Mary had learned to use Finale software and engraved the original score herself. This editor enjoyed spending time with Sr. Mary once a week as tutor while she developed this skill. The Scherzo explores a variety of sections that have their own character. The first section is written in a North German toccata style where the opening measures are treated in a canonic manner and played in a series of thirds and sixths against the main theme stated in the pedal division; this compositional approach is somewhat reminiscent of the organ compositions of Dietrich Buxtehude (Prelude and Fugue in G Minor BUXWV 149). The second section is contrapuntal in nature and depicts a humorous moment; that moment may depict a comedy show or a circus event at a fair. Following that section is the recurrence of the main theme of the first movement. The fourth section is quiet in sound intensity and is the most chromatically oriented than other parts. Following that is a fugue, derived from the main theme of the first movement, and a transitional passage leading back to the recurring main theme. The work concludes triumphantly in the key of G Major. The Scherzo requires attention to articulation, phrasing and timing. This engaging fugue was originally written for 4 woodwinds. It won Second Prize in the Composers Today Competition, Adult Division, Music Teachers Association of California, 1999. In addition to scoring it for standard woodwind, double reed, clarinet, and saxophone quartet, I also produced a version for organ. The audio clip was played by Stephanie McNab, flute, Janet Popesco Archibald, English horn, Carey Bell, Clarinet, and Jenny Gunter, bassoon.

Schadl (A0.912460). Written in G Minor, the piece consists of changing meters and two themes. The first theme starts with the G minor scale that reaches to a perfect fifth above the tonic before descending to the home key. The second theme is related to the first one, but it begins with the perfect-fifth upward movement followed by its stepwise descent, and is written in a fugal manner. The latter half of the work is a toccata written in the style of the late 19th century and early 20th century French organ music; in that section, the pedal division states the main theme against the rapid 16th notes on the manuals in the key of G Major. Technical demands include a good sense of rhythm, a steady beat and a slight legato touch. This movement is suitable for recital and education uses; it may also be performed as a postlude in church services. I wish you the best in taking a look at this piece; so, enjoy it.
