Bach, have been a cornerstone of organists' repertoire for many years. They are among the first works encountered by most organists during their training, and for many, they continue to remain an essential part of the service-playing repertoire. With this volume, Craig A. Penfield has created a new set of eight little preludes and fugues that takes its inspiration from the original collection. Penfield has written these works in a mild neo-baroque style that combines strong elements of traditional baroque writing with some contemporary touches. Pedal throughout these pieces is entirely optional. There are markings of where pedal can be used, but any or all of these can be omitted, and the pedal notes are easily played entirely in the hands.

For many years I have enjoyed playing the simpler manualiter chorale preludes of Zachau and J. G. Walter in the old Peters edition many organists will be familiar with. Then there are the delightful little preludes of Ernst Pepping which I first heard as a teenager in a recording by E. Power Biggs. I had something of a cross between these two influences in mind for this new set of English preludes. There are some finger-twisting moments here and there, but by and large these manuals-only pieces are meant to be shorter, more direct, and simpler (in concept, if not execution!) than my larger sets of preludes. The hymns dealt with here represent a useful mix of liturgical purposes and include Holy, Holy, Holy!, Come, Thou Almighty King, When Morning Gilds the Skies, Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates, All Things Bright and Beautiful, Beneath the Cross of Jesus, The Church’s One Foundation, and Christ the Lord is Risen Today. As always, sources and timings are included and the score prints in landscape format.

It is a service based on stations of the cross from the Anglican tradition, in our case, with a procession to each of nine stations. At each station there is a mini-liturgy which consists of a reading, prayer, interpretive improvisation on the organ, and the singing of a stanza of a hymn. For the improvisation, I weave in images from the reading with the hymn. For example, at the sixth station, the reading includes the phrase “His yoke is easyâ€, and the hymn is “Go to Dark Gethsemane.†The improvisation alternates between the theme from the chorus “His yoke is easy†from Handel’s Messiah and a very dark and thick chordal setting of the hymn. The improvisations are full of imagery which are evocative and emotionally charged.â€-David CherwienThis unified set represents nine Stations of the Cross, but the pieces can also be used individually as preludes, hymn introductions, or worship interludes. Duration: 8 - 16 minutes, 8 pp. Description: The graphic nature of this set of short pieces is designed to elicit cooperative creativity from the performer. With the exception of the last piece — the Chorale — the unorthodox notation is negotiable and open to alteration in consideration of the performer’s inclination and the instrument’s possibilities. The performer may take a highly faithful approach to realizing the score, or consider the Études as models for improvisation. Études II and IV, for example, ask the performer to continue to improvise in like manner, yet map out a clear design for the music. The degree of freedom is considerably more constrained as regards the final Chorale. The pitches, rhythm, length, form are much more specific in this case, although the performer does have great latitude (within suggested guidelines) in choosing registration. The music is generally scored on only two staves. Nonetheless, three manuals are requested for the realization of the Chorale. Pedal keyboard is recommended but not essential. The Pedal is particularly useful in realizing Études I and IV. Wedges and/or weights are necessary for Études III, and may be a useful substitute for the Pedal in Études I and IV.
