A solo organ work composed in 2020.This piece was commissioned by Ethan Neal, a student at the University of Kentucky, for a new music project to raise money for cancer research, and dedicated to all those who have fought a battle with cancer. It was premiered on August 22, 2021 by Ethan Neal at The Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity in Georgetown, KY.Solemn Fanfare has three main ideas or themes: the opening fanfare material and two hymns: Christ the Victorious (RUSSIAN HYMN) and Be Still, My Soul (FINLANDIA). The piece is grandiose throughout and is meant to express the triumph of victory over cancer, whether in this life or the next. The solo trumpet presents RUSSIAN HYMN in an embellished and rhythmically altered manner within the flourishes of the opening and closing sections. In the middle section, FINLANDIA provides the strong chordal foundation above which the solo trumpet adds its triumphant yet sometimes dissonant fanfares, recalling the struggle and the pain that are part of the journey.

COME WITH JOY is a wedding suite containing a bridesmaids' processional (REGENCY), bridal fanfare and march (SONG OF JOY), and a bright, quickly paced recessional (FESTIVE PSALM), which incorporates the melodies of the first two processionals in the B section. The bridal fanfare and bridal march was written for our daughter's wedding and later the other two were written in complimentary keys to complete the suite. Each piece may also be used separately, however, and do not have to be used together. This suite answers the need of brides who wish to have new music to use for her special day. With this suite, even though it was written as a cohesive group, the bride may choose to use as many or as few as she wishes and the bridal march with fanfare is certainly worth a consideration!An audio file of Song of Joy is included here to give you an idea of the flavor of the suite. It is the bridal march with fanfare. The recessional, FESTIVE PSALM, is lengthy and can accommodate large wedding parties without continuous repetition of the main theme. There are several sections in the work, keeping the interest level high because there's no continuous repetition of one main theme. For smaller wedding parties, where less exit music is needed, there are markings of suggested jump spots so that an entire section, or sections, can be omitted. The fact that two of the themes are taken from the previous two processionals ties the music together into an exciting cohesive unit. The music in this suite can also be used for church or school graduations, anniversaries, service music in church settings and other occasions.Regarding difficulty, the manuals require intermediate skills, but the pedals are fairly easy. Most organists who have experience in playing for weddings will be able to handle the techniques required for this suite.

The hymn tune "Dix" is normally associated with the Epiphany text "As With Gladness Men of Old", but also commonly with "For the Beauty of the Earth". This fanfare postlude was composed in 2021 as a festive work for Epiphany Sunday. It was composed on a two manual instrument, and will give you the chance to feature a nice trumpet stop for the hymn tune, as well as full organ sounds for the fanfare theme!

The middle section contrasts the main theme in its character in two instances: 7/8 time signature and very rhythmic in nature. Published by Rebecca Maughan Cook (A0.908187). In 2021 I wrote this entry for an Organ Composition competition. We were required to use the pitches associated with RC MADER. I wrote this set of Miniatures exploring ideas associated with that. Movement 1 is a Fanfare and Hymn setting. Movement 2 is the only time the Pitches are played in entirety and I turned it into a Theme of Love. It's one of my favorite movements from this set. Movement 3 is a Blues with almost all the notes using the given pitches. Movement 4 is such a quirky little piece! It's a March and all the notes are from RC Mader. It was very fun to write. Movement 5 is a Toccata and in order to meet the requirement I placed some chords in inversion for the pedals and picked up the root on the LH. It's busy and beautiful. Intended for the Beginning Organist, all pieces are written in Classical style, all are in Rounded Binary form (ABA), all are in the Key of C, all have very limited pedal use. In other words, these pieces are perfect to have in your repertoire when you need something to pull out at the last minute. Prelude - Soldier's Fanfare is an energetic organ fanfare made up of triads, scales, and arpeggios in very basic form. Pedaling is mostly on the chord root and usually changes just once per bar, and there is no pedaling at all during the middle Swell section. 2 pages, 1:30 minutes Offertory - Music Box Minuet is a delightful Organ Solo for manuals/hands (no pedal part). Both hands are in the Treble Clef. The RH has the melody of mostly quarter notes (crotchets) played on a Flute stop. The LH has mostly 2 note chords, one chord per bar, played on Strings. The A Theme is in 4/4 and the B Theme in 3/4. Each Theme is repeated. 1 page, 1 minute Postlude - Classical Euphoria is an Organ Solo of pure fun. Euphoria--a temporary feeling of excessive happiness and intense joy. That certainly describes this piece of music. This piece puts a smile on my face every time. And it is definitely classical. It is in the Key of C with broken triads and is in Rounded Binary form. The B theme is minor but still happy and energetic. The complete song is Intro-AABBAA-Coda. This short prelude was written as a processional to precede a festive arrangement of the ancient cherubic hymn, Let all mortal flesh keep silence, which received its first performance at Berlin Cathedral on November 29th 2017. This was commissioned to mark the 25th anniversary of John F Kennedy School’s annual Advent services, in collaboration with the American Church in Berlin.The prelude incorporates themes from various Advent hymns, as well as elements of the fanfare theme from the main choral piece. As well as providing an introduction to a performance of the Cherubic Hymn setting (which can be ordered separately), the prelude may also be performed as a stand-alone piece.As in the first performance, I have left the registrations to be added by the organist.

Noes by Robert Orledge: Debussy planned to compose seven pieces of incidental music for André Antoine’s production of Shakespeare’s King Lear (Le Roi Lear) in 1904 at the time of his elopement to Jersey with Emma Bardac. However, he never completed the project due to Antoine’s frequent postponements and unwillingness to provide the ‘30 musicians’ Debussy required to avoid ‘a feeble little sound like fleas rubbing their legs together!’ On the verso of the Fanfare manuscript from Debussy’s sketches, I discovered the start of an extremely moving little piece in a modal D minor, which could only be for ‘La Mort de Cordélia’ in Act 5, scene 3. I thought this would be best suited to a binary movement in which most of the first half, the striking chromatic introduction and the elegiac theme are all by Debussy. This pencil sketch turned up in 2000 in thecollection of Mrs Jayne Ericourt (wife of the pianist Daniel Ericourt) in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA.

Both pieces are in the Key of C, both are binary, and both are written in a style reminiscent of Mozart. Both are for manuals only, no Pedal part. They both have an upbeat, happy feel and are fun to play. One is a Minuet and the other is a Gavot. The Gavot introduces Alberti bass, triplets, and different phrasing between the hands. Repeated sections alternate loud-soft, detached-slurred, major-minor. The Minuet has an easy fanfare theme of repeated notes, scales, and arpeggios, then 6 variations which introduce neighbouring notes, tonic minor, inversions, light syncopation, staccato, and octave. Minuet - 5 pages, 2:30 minutes Gavot - 2 pages, 2:00 minutes with cover, 8 page booklet.

Howard (A0.1399319). 'Postlude in Glory' was specifically written for John Hosking and the first Blackburn Cathedral Composition Competition in 2023. The brief was to compose a Postlude to be played at the end of the Easter Day service, and to use a well known Easter melody. The piece begins with an introduction based on piling fourths, around the opening three notes of the ensuing theme upon which the work is based: 'Melchoir Vulpius' (1609), otherwise known as the hymn tune 'The Strife is O'er'. There follows a set of variations on this theme; initially featuring an Alberti bass, then a variant with the melody in canon in the pedals, then followed by a tonic minor key version, and then a 'scherzando' variation using 5/8 metre in the subdominant. After a return of the introductory build-up, a final 'brillante' version of the theme is stated, complete with fanfares, followed by a victorious coda.
