I composed it under the impression of the organ works of Bach, Buxtehude and Johann Peter Kellner.This work was composed for Reformation Day, so it has the melody of the chorale Ein feste Burg as its pivot.Since harmonies became more colourful after the Baroque period, I have included a lot of chromaticism in this work.This piece is technically extremely demanding, both the manual part and the pedal, which is treated as an absolutely equal voice.The voices are very dense, so that they are not all perceptible at first hearing. The decisive thing in playing is that the result is something like the one in my recording. It is not necessary to play all the voices, or the spacing of the voices in the right hand can be made more tangible by using the respective octaves.I have attached a musical example in which I play the composition on the organ of the Petrikirche in Erfurt (Thuringia).

Rather than compose on the computer as I usually do, I wrote by hand as I determined the best four-part canonic treatment for each of the phrases of the chant. Composing this was akin to assembling a puzzle, both in mindset (this note fits best here) and addictive quality (need to finish this now!). Originally conceived as a short organ piece, I quickly chose to add the English text from the Hymnal 1982 then text directly from the Liber Usualis, a Catholic book of Gregorian chants commonly used until the reforms of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II). This piece is similar in style to an Italian Renaissance canzona or early German Baroque kanon. It should be performed with performance practice of those eras in mind, including lifts after dotted notes, metric accents, and minimal vibrato, especially at cadences. It may be performed in alternatum with one of the choral versions (SATB English, SATB Latin, SSA/TTB Latin, or SSA/TTB English) or with a soloist(s) on the chant or as an organ solo. I have provided the first line of chant below and all six verses in Latin with translations on the next page. The SSA Latin version was adapted from the original SATB version for the women of the Hillcrest High School choral program under the direction of Dr. Khristi Motley in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It reduces the original four-voice setting to three voices without sacrificing any canonic entrances. Either the two-staff or single-staff version may be performed by solo organ. In the single-staff version, stem direction decisions were made primarily for readability, not to show voice leading. Refer to the four-part, two-staff version for voice leading questions.Also available as SSA/TTB in Latin or English. SATB Latin/English versions coming soon!

My Variations on St. Christopher (Beneath the Cross of Jesus) require a wide range of technical prowess from relatively easy (Variation II) to advanced (Variation VII). The Theme presents the unadorned hymn tune with an original 4-part harmonization. Variation I is another 4-part setting but with a more rhythmically active acompaniment in the lower voices. Variation II, a duo for the hands alone, is in the dominant key where the tune is accompanied by an unrelenting stream of triplets. Variation III is a 3-voice canon in which the tenor and pedal bass imitate the soprano, though with a certain amount of intervallic freedom. Variation IV is a trio in which the middle voice presents an ornamented version of the hymn tune. Variation V is a brief fughetta, while Variation VI presents the tune in the pedals against quietly undulating triplets in the hands. The final variation (entitled Introduction and Fugal Fantasy) is by far the most challenging and employs considerable chromaticism toward the end. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangememts of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

Today I improvised this piece which is based on the Gregorian chant introit Gaudete in Domino semper. The chant is taken from the 3rd Sunday in Advent.It is dedicated to my friend organist Colin Mark Andrews.It's a free paraphrase for the organ where the tune can be heard in the upper voice. Other voices sometimes echos fragments of the chant.I tried to change the mode a few times to make it colorful. Even the whole-tone mode seemed appropriate.It's an intermediate level piece.I hope you'll create something and share it with the world today.

The current media call this style of music Spiritual Minimalism. This particular composition utilizes the centering 'ah' of Buddhism, the meditative resting periods of Zen, the plainchant of Christianity, the minimalism of New Age, and more. My inspiration for the melodic line is the 3 main words in the traditional Ave Maria text; Ave (Hail) higher in the staff for celebration, Gratia (Grace) mid-staff for acceptance, and Dominus (God) low in the staff for humility. The accompaniment is the same in every bar of the entire piece; a circling minimalist 2 chord ostinato which is in 2 voices, the upper voice being an offbeat descending mantra. Whether for personal meditation or public performance, this piece will relax, focus, and recharge all who perform it and hear it. 4 pages; 3:40 minutes.

A meditative organ prelude on the melody to which ’Morning Has Broken’ is often sung, consisting of flowing flute passages, which incorporate episodes of the well known Gaelic melody played on a softly voiced solo reed stop. It is written on four staves to make it easier to read because three staves required too many confusing clef changes and other indications on the score. It needs to be played with expression and feeling. However, if two staves are preferred, it is also the second variation of my 'Air and Variations On a Gaelic Melody', in which it is written on two staves.

Toccata & Fugue for Organ (2018)Composed by Aris AntoniadesRunning time: approx. 7' 50'' Writing for Organ always seemed like a very distant dream for me. Born and raised in Cyprus, an isolated Mediterranean island-state in Europe where the religious musical tradition (Greek Orthodox Christianity) relies solely on voices (no instruments used during services), I never had access to an Organ. In fact, to the best of my knowledge, there’s not a single Organ in my entire country. The first time I ever saw one was during my college years in New York – and it was love at first sight! I was fascinated by its sound capabilities, its mechanism, and the sheer skill required to play it. You can, therefore, understand how thrilled I am to have had the opportunity to write for this great instrument. I would like to sincerely thank Shannon Murphy and Austin Philemon for believing in my work, and for commissioning this piece. Both the Toccata and the Fugue are based on the same (but altered) motivic materials. The Toccata is a piece that was inspired by the idea that life is a continuous marathon, represented by the ‘mechanical’ sixteenth-note ostinato figure which never stops – despite the contrapuntal obstacles that are thrown within its path. The motive, however, does transform and adapt along the way, in order to make the best of the situation. The Fugue, on the other hand, represents the cerebral aspect of life: the concept of choices. The ostinato motive of the Toccata has now morphed into the subject of the Fugue, which will be attacked by some violent chromatic enemies. After the high pitch solo, the main melody returns in G major to be ending with a repeat in the original key of C major. I Hope you like this one!

This famous and beloved old song, written by Charles Austin Miles in 1912, is often sung at funerals and was inspired by John, Chapter 20 in the Bible where Mary goes to the Garden Easter morning and finds the tomb of Jesus empty. Mary is distraught but then she hears a voice and realizes it is the voice of Jesus and not the gardener. Upon many requests, the arranger, Kathleen Holyoak, has written this as an organ solo, having previously published it for vocal solo and instrumental versions. This is one title every organist needs to include in their library or organ music. My Variations on the hymn tune St. Elizabeth (Fairest Lord Jesus) present the tune with an original harmonization followed by four variations. The first two settings (Theme and Variation I) give out the tune in unaltered form, undergirded by two different harmonizations. Variation II is a duo cast in baroque style with an ornamented melody accompanied by a rhythmically repetitive pattern in the manual bass. In Variation III, a continuously moving accompaniment played by the feet and the left hand provides a backdrop to another ornamented version of the hymn tune, again in a somewhat baroque style. The final variation is more challenging to play. After a brief introduction, the tune appears in the soprano voice, harmonically supported by the alto and pedal bass, while the left hand provides a continuous stream of eighth-note triplets. After a couple of modulations, the final section (marked grandioso) presents the tune with a 4-voice harmonization punctuated at the end of each phrase by a trumpet-like rhythmic pattern played on a state trumpet stop. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

My setting of the hymn tune Diademata ('Crown Him with Many Crowns') consists of three treatments of the tune. The first begins with a brief introduction, followed by the tune (played on a trumpet-en-chamade stop), contrasted with a rhythmically active accompaniment. After a brief modulatory interlude, the second treatment offers a stately 4-voice harmonization for manuals alone. Another brief interlude then modulates back to the original tonic. The final treatment in 12/8 meter presents the tune in long, ponderous notes in the pedal, while a 2-voice accompaniment in the hands provides a sprightly stream of eighth-notes that serve as a counterweight. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

My Prelude on the Christmas carol tune Stille Nacht (Silent Night) was created with a 3-manual organ in mind, though it might be possible to play it on a 2-manual instrument, depending on the stop list. The three different settings of the tune are intended to be played as a unit, though the cadence that concludes the second setting allows the performer the option of omitting the final setting. The tune appears first in the left hand, then in the pedals, and finally in the soprano voice. The middle setting, in the dominant key, is harder to play than the outer sections, primarily because of the trio texture and quicker rhythmic movement. As one might expect, the three settings are distinguished from one another primarily by their accompanimental styles and suggested registrations. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. It was written as incidental music (a flutist took the top voice) for use in my church this past Christmas, but this charming piece can be used throughout the church year. It really is chamber music for the organ and falls into the early Intermediate category of difficulty, and is just plain fun to both play and to listen to.

Passacaglia (2000-2012) for Organ - 6 minutes This piece exists in versions for organ (this one - the original version in 2000) and orchestra (performed by Bristol University Symphony Orchestra under the baton of John Pickard in 2001), and finally a piano duet version completed in 2012. The theme is based on the ground bass from Bach’s stonking Passacaglia in C minor for organ. However, the implied harmonies of Bach’s original ground bass are treated to some twisted harmonies – where each chord is altered using a system of harmonic substitution - swapping each chord implication for a newly chosen one (Cm=C, Fm=F#, G=A, Dm=A¨, Eb=F and on it goes around the 12 chromatic notes). Each key therefore has a ‘dominant’ and ‘subdominant’ that are not the actual chords V and IV in that key, so the traditional cadences and chord relationships are supplanted by 12 individual 3-chord relationships – one set of three chords for each of the 12 (now almost exclusively major) keys. In an attempt to recreate the pulls of the traditional tonic-dominant-subdominant relationships, each key then also has a particular mode/scale with particular added notes that are designed to recreate the sense of moving away from and back towards the home chord of that key. This results in a lot of rich added harmonies and some idiomatic voice-leading. Bach’s original theme in Cm is: C G - E¨ F - G A¨ - F G - D E¨ - B C - F G - C, and in the opening statement of the ground bass this has become: C A - E F# - A B¨ - F# A - D# E - C# C - F# A - C. There are then 21 variations which modulate through a range of keys, during which the ground bass is constantly re-adjusted to fit the new harmonic areas. It starts in C major, then goes through ‘closely’ related keys (eg A major and A¨ major), and then back to C in variations 6, 9 and 11. This kind of arch then happens again but going through more distant keys before returning to C in variations 18, 19 and the final climactic variation 21. Leaving aside the structural and tonal nuts and bolts, my aim was to compose a piece that attempts to recapture some of the nobility and beauty of Bach's Passacaglia, with rich added note harmonies, and exuding an exuberant joy.
