Written June 1, 2023, this is an original organ composition in a dissonant and modern style with somewhat of an atonal feel. It uses an internal drone of a B and F which holds continuously to the very end with keyboard weights to be placed on the keys freeing both hands to play around it. It also uses many dissonant and parallel intervals such as tritones, 4ths and 5ths, some whole tone passages, yet somewhat built on a tritone substitution using a D flat 13 chord which substitutes for the dominant chord of C major with the last chord resolving to C using a C major 13(#11). The YouTube performance is by Carson Cooman who is performing this piece on a concert at Harvard University on July 19, 2023. James Michael Stevens is a prolific composer residing in Nashville, TN and whose organ works are performed around the world.

Intended for the Beginning Organist, all pieces are written in Classical style, all are in Rounded Binary form (ABA), all are in the Key of C, all have very limited pedal use. In other words, these pieces are perfect to have in your repertoire when you need something to pull out at the last minute. Prelude - Soldier's Fanfare is an energetic organ fanfare made up of triads, scales, and arpeggios in very basic form. Pedaling is mostly on the chord root and usually changes just once per bar, and there is no pedaling at all during the middle Swell section. 2 pages, 1:30 minutes Offertory - Music Box Minuet is a delightful Organ Solo for manuals/hands (no pedal part). Both hands are in the Treble Clef. The RH has the melody of mostly quarter notes (crotchets) played on a Flute stop. The LH has mostly 2 note chords, one chord per bar, played on Strings. The A Theme is in 4/4 and the B Theme in 3/4. Each Theme is repeated. 1 page, 1 minute Postlude - Classical Euphoria is an Organ Solo of pure fun. Euphoria--a temporary feeling of excessive happiness and intense joy. That certainly describes this piece of music. This piece puts a smile on my face every time. And it is definitely classical. It is in the Key of C with broken triads and is in Rounded Binary form. The B theme is minor but still happy and energetic. The complete song is Intro-AABBAA-Coda. By putting melody on great flute 8' with no volume fluxuation and the left hand constant moving tritone using Gedeckt 8', the organist has to experiment with increasing then decreasing unpredictable and violent volume changes to achieve the realism of a major wind storm. Truly, it will become a bleak mid-winter. I have used it as an offertory last year and will be using it somewhere this Christmas season. The wind storm makes this a very unique piece, not the standard worship service piece. Easy to play as it uses no pedal tones, the challenge is extensive use of the swell pedal for only the accompaniment with flute on great the steady volume. Tune name: Cranham.

The Finale from Sonata In C For Organ is suitable for recital use, and may be used for teaching students on techniques of incorporating thematic materials from other movements or other works to their compositions.This last movement opens with a slow and quiet registration, depicting an anticipation of some good event to come. One may associate this section (measure 1 to 51) with the expectation of Christ’s resurrection from the dead. The theme opens with a motivic variation of bugle theme that was stated in the first movement of the sonata. The exposition part of this work begins at measure 52, where the TRSCH motive repeats continuously in the pedal part against the main theme. Other thematic materials from previous movements occur in this movement. From measure 111 to 118, the first theme from the first movement appears against the main theme of this movement, and the former one is restated at bar 182 to 185. The second theme from the scherzo movement appears against the main theme of this movement at bar 120 to 123. The final section of the piece that commences from measure 195 to 211 contains the TRSCH motive, stated in the pedal part; the motive, originally written in quarter-note notation, is augmented rhythmically to whole note notation, giving one an impression of triumphant splendor. What brings the sonata to a triumphant close is that the TRSCH motive is stated three times, using the full organ registration. I hope that you enjoy this work.

In the fall of 2013 my friend and colleague, Paulius Grigonis who is the organist at St Joseph church here in Vilnius was preparing to play a recital at Vilnius Cathedral around Christmas time. He approached me asking for advice about the pieces he could be playing.I offered him to compose a set of 6 variations on the famous Christmas tune Adeste fideles and he agreed too much hesitation (too bad).I started working on the composition but got stuck at the end of the 5th variation. I used major and minor chords only. My goal was to create something colorful and modern and yet understandable to the listener.Because of these simple chords the harmonies are very clear and transparent. What makes it sound modern though is that I avoid traditional chordal progressions of the perfect fourth and perfect fifth. This would imply tonic-dominant, dominant-tonic, tonic-subdominant, subdominant-tonic relationship.But I didn't want this. I wanted to surprise my audience and my friend Paulius. So I chose all kinds of progressions - minor and major seconds, minor and major thirds, even a tritone to keep it fresh.However, the result was too difficult to play for Paulius on a short notice and I got side-tracked with other projects. Although the idea of completing the variations never left me.So last weekend I sat down and added the last variation with a CODA.I hope you'll enjoy this piece which is dedicated to Paulius.8 pages, PDF score. This Prelude on the Christmas carol tune Christmas Song (There's a Song in the Air) is the first of two settings I have created based on this tune. This setting requires only a two-manual organ and is of moderate difficulty. Structurally, the piece begins with an introduction that makes use of the dotted eighth/sixteenth rhythm that pervades the tune itself. A fresh harmonization of the first two phrases of the tune follows. They are succeeded in turn by an interlude similar to the introduction. A harmonization of the third and fourth phrases of the tune is then presented. A shorter interlude leads to a varied restatement of the last phrase, itself followed by a brief postlude, again employing the aforementioned dotted rhythm. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search he Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

A well known French Noel (Quand Jesus naquit àNoël) from the Baroque era, arranged by many of the big French Baroque composers like Balastre and Beauvarlet-Charpentier. It is also a very populair Christmas song in The Netherlands (Midden in de Winternacht). I made an accessible Basse de Trompette over this beautiful melodie. However it’s written in C major however it requires some skills to play the solo with the left hand. A lovely tune as a prelude or any other occasion around Christmas. And of course, you can sing the the words on this one as well.
