Veni Emmanuel (composed 2022, duration ca. 5’ 10â€) builds on the mystery inherent in the season of Advent, the text that presents us with many different visions of Christ (God with us, Wisdom from on high, etc.), and in the ancient, minor-mode tune itself. There are two complete statements of the tune with its refrain, one quiet and sedate, the other loud and joyous. The rest of the piece is essentially a free fantasy, culminating in an enigmatic right-hand solo a dozen or so bars before the end. This piece is contemplative and moody, with plenty of opportunity for colourful registrations.

SOULS AT REST for ORGAN Playing time: Appx. 2:40 Services: All Saints, All Souls, Autumn, Memorial, any The pedal plays the somber yet peaceful melody in this rather introspective work, with the swell box opening now and then to allow the keyboard to give little dialogues that echo the melody. A dissonant mood in the middle section is reminiscent of our dismay and confusion over the loss of loved ones, but the return of the melody at the end soothes us once more with eternal hope. All Saints and All Souls are beautiful celebrations that are harbingers of the close of the year. As the beginnings of the pre-winter feasts, they are also the earliest to shine light in the darkness as many cemeteries become illuminated by the warm glow of thousands of candles placed in commemoration of the dearly departed. Although I composed this piece under the spiritual influence of those two holy days, the work may be used at any service where a reflective, meditative piece is needed. Chorale Prelude on Rockingham (composed 2018, duration ca. 4’ 10â€). The text most commonly associated with this tune (When I survey the wondrous cross) is reflective, and inward looking. In it the writer marvels at the depth of God’s love for us, and is humbled by the vastness of our challenge in reciprocating it. We can only stand in awe at the impossibility of our task. Likewise the task of the arranger who tries to capture, in music, a fraction of these feelings. The piece begins very simply and grows more complex, with each statement of the hymn tune more elaborate than the last. Flowing triplets keep the motion going, and the rich harmonic palette is accentuated by several unexpected modulations. The mood is serene, though not always quiet, and often with uncertainty bubbling right under the surface.
