Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534661). Over the years 1908–16, Debussy had produced a viable scenario for Usher on his third attempt. But when he came to making a complete draft of the music, he seems to have lost interest during Roderick Usher’s long monologue, even though he was setting his own text. As in No-ja-li he jumped to the next passage that interested him, in this case the exciting final melodrama and the collapse of the Usher house itself.In the process of completing the missing half of the score, I discovered that by reusing Debussy’s material for similar psychological situations across the opera, and by metamorphosing existing ideas (as Debussy does with Mélisande’s theme in his opera Pelléas et Mélisande), the only things I really needed to add were linking material and any passages where fast music was required. So the ‘nightmare scherzo’, and Lady Madeline’s escape from her coffin and her final bloody revenge on her brother are all mine, but most of the rest is existing Debussy in changing contexts (in which the Russian technique of ‘changing backgrounds’, both harmonic and textural, proved extremely useful, as it did to Debussy in his Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune). Eventually, both my completed ballet No-ja-li and the House of Usher were successfully premiered in 2006 and the latter soon began to find its way into the established repertoire in Europe and the US. To further support this, I transcribed some of the highlights of Debussy’s score as A Night in the House of Usher for organ, and subsequently piano—with a focus on Scene 2 and the final, horrific and maca-bre melodrama. This climaxes in the double deaths of Roderick Usher and his Sister Madeline, together with the disintegration of the ill-fated House of Usher into the stagnant lake-all beneath a blood-red moon.In this form it was first performed by Ian Buckle in the Howard Assembly Rooms, Leeds in 2010.

A meditative organ prelude on the melody to which ’Morning Has Broken’ is often sung, consisting of flowing flute passages, which incorporate episodes of the well known Gaelic melody played on a softly voiced solo reed stop. It is written on four staves to make it easier to read because three staves required too many confusing clef changes and other indications on the score. It needs to be played with expression and feeling. However, if two staves are preferred, it is also the second variation of my 'Air and Variations On a Gaelic Melody', in which it is written on two staves.

It is a set of five variations on Johann Crüger’s classic Lenten/Passiontide hymn, appearing in English usually with the text “Ah, Holy Jesus, how hast thou offended.†In the typical manner, the variations present contrasting approaches to the chorale melody: the first, in three voices with a moving bass; the second, in three part retrograde canon; the third, in loose canon in two modes and speeds simultaneously; the fourth, under an ostinato rhythm; and the fifth, in chorale rhythm with a new harmonization.

It was first introduced as a hymn tune in “The English Hymnal†of 1906 set to the words of Horatius Bonar’s “I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say.†It is also commonly sung to Louis Benson’s Christmas carol O Sing a Song of Bethlehem and Fred Pratt Green's Passion hymn To Mock Your Reign, O Dearest Lord. The tune is named for the English town of Kingsfold. Also available scored for brass quintet. Level M - Duration 2:40.

verybody loves "When the Saints Go Marching In" as an up-tempo, foot-tapping Dixieland march. But there are times when you want something slower and quieter to allude to the same classic tune. Passacaglia: based on an ostinato passage in 3 time. The idea behind the passacaglia relates to the origin of the word, it is basically a gentle stroll down the street (pasar la calle in Spanish, which was converted into Passacaglia in Italian) 2. Dorina: a descriptive piece in Dorian mode based on a song about a cat, from the aptly named village of Chattevoix, who stalks, but never catches, a little bird. 3. Playtime: also about a cat, the composer's own cat who is playful and rushes around the house but occasionally stopping to pummel the soft furnishings. 4. Early Evening in Camden Town: a more serious and sad piece - in 3-3-2 time. It is an evocation of the poor folk in Camden and their dreams of what could be, if only….. It was originally a song, which the composer wrote when he was living in London, based on a poem by fellow Londoner Sandra Erös The streets are part of a toy town, waiting to be played with…. 5. The Bishop's Dance: a curious and comical piece in 11 time (3, 3, 3, 2). It comes from the legend of Robin Hood, in which Robin meets the bishop of Hereford, who had hoped to get the better of him, but Robin prevails and forces him to dance. The clumsy attempts of the ungainly Bishop to obey Robin's commands cause great merriment among the merry men To quote our vicar, Rev Barbara, after the recital For me music paints a picture, and, for that, I have got this picture of someone going for a stroll in their village and then they came across a very old cat wandering down the street imaging it could catch birds but never catching them. And then it would lie down for a sleep and dream of the days when it was a kitten.... It was a very reflective programme and turns our mind about What for the Autumn, what do we need to do next.. it really did fit in with the mood of the year, as we turn towards building up the programme for next year... Written June 1, 2023, this is an original organ composition in a dissonant and modern style with somewhat of an atonal feel. It uses an internal drone of a B and F which holds continuously to the very end with keyboard weights to be placed on the keys freeing both hands to play around it. It also uses many dissonant and parallel intervals such as tritones, 4ths and 5ths, some whole tone passages, yet somewhat built on a tritone substitution using a D flat 13 chord which substitutes for the dominant chord of C major with the last chord resolving to C using a C major 13(#11). The YouTube performance is by Carson Cooman who is performing this piece on a concert at Harvard University on July 19, 2023. James Michael Stevens is a prolific composer residing in Nashville, TN and whose organ works are performed around the world.

At various times Sister Mary chaired the Fine Arts Division, coordinated the Music Department, and served on many college committees. After Sr. Theophane Hytrek's passing in 1992, Sr. Mary succeeded her as organist at St. Joseph Chapel for several decades.  “Tribute†was written in response to Sr. Theophane Hytrek’s choral compostion  “Canticle of the Creatures†(SSAA) sung by the School Sisters of St. Francis choirs regularly for community celebrations since it was written in 1949. I hope you'll enjoy this piece which is based on the Gregorian chant Communion for the 2nd Sunday in Advent. It is dedicated to my friend organist and harpsichordist Frank Mento.Although this Communion is written in the 2nd mode, to make it more colorful, I often changed and transposed the mode throughout the piece.It's a free paraphrase of Gregorian chant. I added additional thematic passages freely in different modes as my imagination called. The pedal maintains a dialogue with the hand part.PDF score. 6 pages. Duration - 6 minutes. The association of the twelfth Organ Symphony with Pentecost began with the Regensburg Cathedral organist Franz Josef Stoiber giving its first performance on the 2009 Rieger organ immediately in front of the great Pentecost window by Josef Oberberger in Regensburg Cathedral. Pentecost represents a consummation in Christianity, a manifestation of the Trinity, intense spirituality, baptism and the development of community among all Christians. It is a passionate celebration of inner joy, yet always surrounded by an aura of reverence and spirituality. 1st movement: A powerful invocation using the Gregorian Pentecostal hymn Veni, Creator Spiritus. 2nd movement: The white dove is a symbol of the Holy Spirit, representing gentleness and love. In the 3rd movement, Water is the ‘fons vivus’ (living fountain) of all life. Flowing figures on the organ frame the quasi-Gregorian variations on the melody of ‘Komm, Heiliger Geist, Herre Gott’ (Ebersberg c. 1480), inspired by the 11th Century antiphon ‘Veni Sancte Spiritus’. 4th movement: Breath and wind have been used as images of the spirit of God ever since the story of the Creation. At Pentecost they come together in a conflagration. This ‘Tempesta di fuoco’ begins with hovering tonality (over a twelve-note motif) with bright and shrill harmonies, but then leads into the tonic key as the Pentecostal hymn ‘Veni, Creator Spiritus’ shines through - a programmatic credo for the twelve Organ Symphonies, asserting a universal awareness of tonality.
