Veni Emmanuel (composed 2022, duration ca. 5’ 10â€) builds on the mystery inherent in the season of Advent, the text that presents us with many different visions of Christ (God with us, Wisdom from on high, etc.), and in the ancient, minor-mode tune itself. There are two complete statements of the tune with its refrain, one quiet and sedate, the other loud and joyous. The rest of the piece is essentially a free fantasy, culminating in an enigmatic right-hand solo a dozen or so bars before the end. This piece is contemplative and moody, with plenty of opportunity for colourful registrations.

My Prelude on the Christmas carol tune Mendelssohn (Hark! the Herald Angels Sing) opens with a brief introduction based on the first measure of the third phrase of the tune. An original harmonization of the entire tune follows, anchored by a repetitive rhythmic pattern of alternating rests and chords. An interlude ensues, which is a rhythmically intensified reworking of the initial introduction. Then the first phrase of the tune sounds in a new key in the pedal bass, accompanied by parallel triads in the hands. Another interlude follows, also based on parallel triads, and leading to a statement in the pedals of the second phrase of the tune. Slightly modified versions of the third and fourth phrases with varied accompaniments lead to a strong cadence. The final section follows, beginning with an extended introduction that increases the rhythmic pace to the point where a constant stream of rapidly moving sixteenth notes drives forward to the final statement of the carol tune, and lends a sense of urgency as the flow continues underneath the melody. The tempo slows slightly during a brief postlude in which the state trumpet reiterates a rhythmic pattern heard earlier. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

Possibly dating from the Middle Ages, this English folk tune was first published with secular lyrics in “English County Songs,†an anthology compiled in 1893. It was first introduced as a hymn tune in “The English Hymnal†of 1906 set to the words of Horatius Bonar’s “I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say.†It is also commonly sung to Louis Benson’s Christmas carol O Sing a Song of Bethlehem and Fred Pratt Green's Passion hymn To Mock Your Reign, O Dearest Lord. The tune is named for the English town of Kingsfold. Also available scored for brass quintet. Level M - Duration 2:40.

Based on the opening verse of psalm 130, and freely composed using a 12 note scale, and brilliantly performed here by Carson Cooman. To help understand the structure of the piece, the 12 note row is seen in the first three measures and you can see how that pattern works throughout the piece. The angular melodic material combined with the dramatic cluster chords paints a vivid picture of 'the Deep'. While this music would sound well on a larger instrument, this music can easily be performed on a two manual organ with pedals. Themes intersected include grace, divine guidance, the Cross, eternal hope, and joy. The early folk Gospel hymnody tradition is referenced several times. The music itself is not profound in technique, rather relying mostly on harmony to provide interest and variety. Most are of a meditative nature, one or two pages in length, appropriate for a quiet short prelude, offertory, or communion meditation. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.1137387). Psalm 22 is a well-known and loved 8 part a capella choral work by Felix Mendelssohn. I have here arranged it for Organ Solo. Psalm 22 is about a person crying out to God to save him from his enemies, then thanks God for rescuing him. Thus, the first half is in E minor and the second half is in E major. Since it no longer has lyrics to convey the meaning I have used new tempi, dynamics, and registration, and also altered some harmonies and rhythms to add the appropriate interest and emotion. In order to create dialogue on the organ I have used unmetered recitative chant followed by metered antiphon in many places. In another section I use overlapping call and response between the hands and manuals. These are interspersed with 4 part Chorales. The mood constantly shifts throughout in many short sections, but the beauty is in the way they fit together creating harmony and polyphony and dialogued emotions. This is a great 9 minute organ Prelude which bridges the Classical and Romantic eras. 9:15 minutes; 11 pages (Apologies- I was in a hurry to record this, so there are a couple of wrong notes and rhythmic inaccuracies in the recording.).
