The piece is based on 8 ascending and varied cycles of a 9-bar added-note chord sequence and theme. Only the white notes are used, in the modal aeolian scale (A-A), within a slow, reverential tempo. Also known as Luther's Cradle Hymn (tune Mueller), this American Christmas carol melody is much admired. This new arrangement for organ sees the melody in the right hand with gentle 'cradle rocking' left hand 8th notes above the held pedal notes anchoring the slow moving harmony. The end result is a gentle, reflective and musically satisfying arrangement of a much loved Christmas carol. Use an expressive 8' stop to solo the melody and balance it against an open 8' flute (or 8' and 4' flutes if the 8' is too quiet). Couple the left hand to a quiet 16' Pedal stop. The music reflects the mood of the text (This is God’s wondrous world) which celebrates the wonders of nature. The overall shape is a long crescendo, leading to a joyous, boisterous statement of the tune. This is quickly followed by an extended, reflective, almost mysterious coda, ultimately concluding in quiet contentment. The piece bubbles with life and energy, inventive counterpoint, and some fairly pungent jazz harmonies.

Chorale Prelude on Rockingham (composed 2018, duration ca. 4’ 10â€). The text most commonly associated with this tune (When I survey the wondrous cross) is reflective, and inward looking. In it the writer marvels at the depth of God’s love for us, and is humbled by the vastness of our challenge in reciprocating it. We can only stand in awe at the impossibility of our task. Likewise the task of the arranger who tries to capture, in music, a fraction of these feelings. The piece begins very simply and grows more complex, with each statement of the hymn tune more elaborate than the last. Flowing triplets keep the motion going, and the rich harmonic palette is accentuated by several unexpected modulations. The mood is serene, though not always quiet, and often with uncertainty bubbling right under the surface.

In the first bars, the piece already captivates the audience with brilliant semiquaver figures and chord beats in classical toccata style which are tailored in a masterly fashion to the technical possibilities of the instrument. A reflective interlude (Adagio) brings some peace and quiet, playing with tonally charming triadic chains. The brilliant four-minute concert piece ends with a virtuoso finale.
