It is symbolized by the rhythm of the left hand pattern - reminiscent of the wild dove call which Ausra and I heard while visiting Gdansk, Poland and its historical organs - 5 notes (short, long, long, short, long). The piece is written in the key of F major with the excursion to C major in the middle episode before return to F major at the end. The keys are spiced up with some modal chords which make up colorful harmonies. This composition will be very effective in liturgical organ playing and concert programs whenever contemplative music is desired. Dedicated to my wife Ausra to whom this wild dove didn't let sleep at night.

Was lebet, was schwebet (composed 2021, duration ca. 5’) is less a chorale prelude, and more a prelude and fugue. The prelude is a free fantasy based mostly on the opening notes of the hymn tune. It alternates short pedal solos with showy figures in the manuals. The fugue is based on the first six measures of the hymn tune, and thoroughly investigates the subject. It concludes in a brief flourish, reminiscent of the opening fantasia. A final fugato presents the entire hymn tune, in augmentation, beginning in the bass (on the pedals) and moving to the soprano. The piece is joyful and exuberant from beginning to end.Technical note: despite the extensive counterpoint and manual flourishes, this piece is quite approachable, being easier, on the whole, than a typical Bach prelude and fugue.

Used as a place of worship for centuries, first by Christians and then by Muslims (from 1453), the Hagia Sophia (Istanbul) still amazes people from all over the world. Since 1934, it is a museum – but more than that, the Hagia Sophia, a unique architectural work of monumental proportions in Christian Antiquity and the Middle Ages, is described as a mystical place. Monumental, yet mysterious, a 'miracle of space', a symbol, a sign. 'Sophia', the holy wisdom, accompanies us through the whole Bible history. The present music has to be regarded against this background: A reflection, contemplation with music and poetry. The Creation is powerful, but the truth about it is powerful as well. And the realization that the path to truth is reached through wisdom. As a consequence, this piece has to cross the powerful for half its duration, monumental. It is the cupola over all following (observing) verses (sections). From bar 371, the path leads back into the powerful, into the rejoicing (bar 406). It must not be forgotten to mention the suggestion of 'singing in a mosque' (bar 510) which is answered by a simple prayer (bar 511). This is reminiscent of the mosaic above the imperial door of the building portraying Jesus Christ sitting on a jewelled throne. He holds an open book in which one can read 'Peace be with you. I am the light of the world'. The line and sound of Hagia Sophia are based on a symmetrical eight-note row (mode B) with the notes B, C sharp, D, E/F, G, A flat (G sharp), B flat (A sharp). Although the major-minor relations are removed, harmonic connections (colours) emerge nevertheless.

Both pieces are in the Key of C, both are binary, and both are written in a style reminiscent of Mozart. Both are for manuals only, no Pedal part. They both have an upbeat, happy feel and are fun to play. One is a Minuet and the other is a Gavot. The Gavot introduces Alberti bass, triplets, and different phrasing between the hands. Repeated sections alternate loud-soft, detached-slurred, major-minor. The Minuet has an easy fanfare theme of repeated notes, scales, and arpeggios, then 6 variations which introduce neighbouring notes, tonic minor, inversions, light syncopation, staccato, and octave. Minuet - 5 pages, 2:30 minutes Gavot - 2 pages, 2:00 minutes with cover, 8 page booklet.

The 16th century tune Es ist ein Ros entsprungen is popular at Christmas, known as Lo, how a rose e'er blooming, A great and mighty wonder, and other texts. This arrangement is another written to feature a younger instrumentalist in your Christmas services. Parts for trombone, baritone, and trumpet are included, and other instrument transpotitions can be arranged by contacting the composer. I've used the feeling of A great and mighty wonder for this, since a faster tempo normally works better for a young musician. An experieced played can easily handle this as a slower tempo, reminiscent of Lo, how a rose e'er blooming. There are three other suites with traditional hymns and original works, under the titles of 2020, 2021, and 2022 Suites for Trombone and Organ. I hope you will give some younger players the chance to shine!

The Scherzo explores a variety of sections that have their own character. The first section is written in a North German toccata style where the opening measures are treated in a canonic manner and played in a series of thirds and sixths against the main theme stated in the pedal division; this compositional approach is somewhat reminiscent of the organ compositions of Dietrich Buxtehude (Prelude and Fugue in G Minor BUXWV 149). The second section is contrapuntal in nature and depicts a humorous moment; that moment may depict a comedy show or a circus event at a fair. Following that section is the recurrence of the main theme of the first movement. The fourth section is quiet in sound intensity and is the most chromatically oriented than other parts. Following that is a fugue, derived from the main theme of the first movement, and a transitional passage leading back to the recurring main theme. The work concludes triumphantly in the key of G Major. The Scherzo requires attention to articulation, phrasing and timing. This work is suitable for educational and recital uses: it introduces organ students to major works of Buxtehude and Johann S. Bach and many more composers; organists of various expertise may play the work to lighten up the audience's mood after listening to more difficult organ works. SOULS AT REST for ORGAN Playing time: Appx. 2:40 Services: All Saints, All Souls, Autumn, Memorial, any The pedal plays the somber yet peaceful melody in this rather introspective work, with the swell box opening now and then to allow the keyboard to give little dialogues that echo the melody. A dissonant mood in the middle section is reminiscent of our dismay and confusion over the loss of loved ones, but the return of the melody at the end soothes us once more with eternal hope. All Saints and All Souls are beautiful celebrations that are harbingers of the close of the year. As the beginnings of the pre-winter feasts, they are also the earliest to shine light in the darkness as many cemeteries become illuminated by the warm glow of thousands of candles placed in commemoration of the dearly departed. Although I composed this piece under the spiritual influence of those two holy days, the work may be used at any service where a reflective, meditative piece is needed. The registrations I give here are merely suggestions; adapt at will to your instrument and the ambience you wish to create. God bless!

Fugue in D Major, being a majestic and uplifting in character, is suitable for memorial services, postludes, and for other occasions. In performing the work, the principal chorus would be a good choice of organ registration for the great division and a quieter registration for the swell or choir division. As the piece progresses towards the end, reed stops may be added to bring brilliance to the work.
