It is a service based on stations of the cross from the Anglican tradition, in our case, with a procession to each of nine stations. At each station there is a mini-liturgy which consists of a reading, prayer, interpretive improvisation on the organ, and the singing of a stanza of a hymn. For the improvisation, I weave in images from the reading with the hymn. For example, at the sixth station, the reading includes the phrase “His yoke is easyâ€, and the hymn is “Go to Dark Gethsemane.†The improvisation alternates between the theme from the chorus “His yoke is easy†from Handel’s Messiah and a very dark and thick chordal setting of the hymn. The improvisations are full of imagery which are evocative and emotionally charged.â€-David CherwienThis unified set represents nine Stations of the Cross, but the pieces can also be used individually as preludes, hymn introductions, or worship interludes. A special reproducible liturgy Good Friday: The Way of The Cross by Susan Palo Cherwien is also included.

Theme and Variations on TRSCH is a piece that is suitable for concert use. As one plays the piece, one shall realize that each variation has its own character. The work also may be used for educational purposes in that it teaches students on how a theme is transformed rhythmically and arranged melodically.Theme And Variations On TRSCH For Organ by Thomas R. Schadl consists of seven variations that are based on TRSCH (B flat, D, E flat, C, and B or A# D D# C B). It is written using the serial technique, the compositional method where a row of notes are arranged in direct, reverse, inverse and retrograde-inverse orders. The technique employed is not as strict as the 12-tone system used in the compositions of Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern. In a standard theme and variations form, the melody may be altered by adding or subtracting notes, or changing it rhythmically, but it is not the case in the piece being discussed. Most variations do not follow the rhythmic pattern of the main theme; rather, the theme in each variation is treated in fragments, lengthened note values, shortened note values, inversions and reversed orders. But when he came to making a complete draft of the music, he seems to have lost interest during Roderick Usher’s long monologue, even though he was setting his own text. As in No-ja-li he jumped to the next passage that interested him, in this case the exciting final melodrama and the collapse of the Usher house itself.In the process of completing the missing half of the score, I discovered that by reusing Debussy’s material for similar psychological situations across the opera, and by metamorphosing existing ideas (as Debussy does with Mélisande’s theme in his opera Pelléas et Mélisande), the only things I really needed to add were linking material and any passages where fast music was required. So the ‘nightmare scherzo’, and Lady Madeline’s escape from her coffin and her final bloody revenge on her brother are all mine, but most of the rest is existing Debussy in changing contexts (in which the Russian technique of ‘changing backgrounds’, both harmonic and textural, proved extremely useful, as it did to Debussy in his Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune). Eventually, both my completed ballet No-ja-li and the House of Usher were successfully premiered in 2006 and the latter soon began to find its way into the established repertoire in Europe and the US. To further support this, I transcribed some of the highlights of Debussy’s score as A Night in the House of Usher for organ, and subsequently piano—with a focus on Scene 2 and the final, horrific and maca-bre melodrama. This climaxes in the double deaths of Roderick Usher and his Sister Madeline, together with the disintegration of the ill-fated House of Usher into the stagnant lake-all beneath a blood-red moon.In this form it was first performed by Ian Buckle in the Howard Assembly Rooms, Leeds in 2010.

Also known as Luther's Cradle Hymn (tune Mueller), this American Christmas carol melody is much admired. This new arrangement for organ sees the melody in the right hand with gentle 'cradle rocking' left hand 8th notes above the held pedal notes anchoring the slow moving harmony. The end result is a gentle, reflective and musically satisfying arrangement of a much loved Christmas carol. Use an expressive 8' stop to solo the melody and balance it against an open 8' flute (or 8' and 4' flutes if the 8' is too quiet). Couple the left hand to a quiet 16' Pedal stop. Chorale Prelude on Rockingham (composed 2018, duration ca. 4’ 10â€). The text most commonly associated with this tune (When I survey the wondrous cross) is reflective, and inward looking. In it the writer marvels at the depth of God’s love for us, and is humbled by the vastness of our challenge in reciprocating it. We can only stand in awe at the impossibility of our task. Likewise the task of the arranger who tries to capture, in music, a fraction of these feelings. The piece begins very simply and grows more complex, with each statement of the hymn tune more elaborate than the last. Flowing triplets keep the motion going, and the rich harmonic palette is accentuated by several unexpected modulations. The mood is serene, though not always quiet, and often with uncertainty bubbling right under the surface.
