In the fall of 2013 my friend and colleague, Paulius Grigonis who is the organist at St Joseph church here in Vilnius was preparing to play a recital at Vilnius Cathedral around Christmas time. He approached me asking for advice about the pieces he could be playing.I offered him to compose a set of 6 variations on the famous Christmas tune Adeste fideles and he agreed too much hesitation (too bad).I started working on the composition but got stuck at the end of the 5th variation. I used major and minor chords only. My goal was to create something colorful and modern and yet understandable to the listener.Because of these simple chords the harmonies are very clear and transparent. What makes it sound modern though is that I avoid traditional chordal progressions of the perfect fourth and perfect fifth. This would imply tonic-dominant, dominant-tonic, tonic-subdominant, subdominant-tonic relationship.But I didn't want this. I wanted to surprise my audience and my friend Paulius. So I chose all kinds of progressions - minor and major seconds, minor and major thirds, even a tritone to keep it fresh.However, the result was too difficult to play for Paulius on a short notice and I got side-tracked with other projects. Although the idea of completing the variations never left me.So last weekend I sat down and added the last variation with a CODA.I hope you'll enjoy this piece which is dedicated to Paulius.8 pages, PDF score. Howard (A0.1399319). 'Postlude in Glory' was specifically written for John Hosking and the first Blackburn Cathedral Composition Competition in 2023. The brief was to compose a Postlude to be played at the end of the Easter Day service, and to use a well known Easter melody. The piece begins with an introduction based on piling fourths, around the opening three notes of the ensuing theme upon which the work is based: 'Melchoir Vulpius' (1609), otherwise known as the hymn tune 'The Strife is O'er'. There follows a set of variations on this theme; initially featuring an Alberti bass, then a variant with the melody in canon in the pedals, then followed by a tonic minor key version, and then a 'scherzando' variation using 5/8 metre in the subdominant. After a return of the introductory build-up, a final 'brillante' version of the theme is stated, complete with fanfares, followed by a victorious coda. The association of the twelfth Organ Symphony with Pentecost began with the Regensburg Cathedral organist Franz Josef Stoiber giving its first performance on the 2009 Rieger organ immediately in front of the great Pentecost window by Josef Oberberger in Regensburg Cathedral. Pentecost represents a consummation in Christianity, a manifestation of the Trinity, intense spirituality, baptism and the development of community among all Christians. It is a passionate celebration of inner joy, yet always surrounded by an aura of reverence and spirituality. 1st movement: A powerful invocation using the Gregorian Pentecostal hymn Veni, Creator Spiritus. 2nd movement: The white dove is a symbol of the Holy Spirit, representing gentleness and love. In the 3rd movement, Water is the ‘fons vivus’ (living fountain) of all life. Flowing figures on the organ frame the quasi-Gregorian variations on the melody of ‘Komm, Heiliger Geist, Herre Gott’ (Ebersberg c. 1480), inspired by the 11th Century antiphon ‘Veni Sancte Spiritus’. 4th movement: Breath and wind have been used as images of the spirit of God ever since the story of the Creation. At Pentecost they come together in a conflagration. Both pieces are in the Key of C, both are binary, and both are written in a style reminiscent of Mozart. Both are for manuals only, no Pedal part. They both have an upbeat, happy feel and are fun to play. One is a Minuet and the other is a Gavot. The Gavot introduces Alberti bass, triplets, and different phrasing between the hands. Repeated sections alternate loud-soft, detached-slurred, major-minor. The Minuet has an easy fanfare theme of repeated notes, scales, and arpeggios, then 6 variations which introduce neighbouring notes, tonic minor, inversions, light syncopation, staccato, and octave. Minuet - 5 pages, 2:30 minutes Gavot - 2 pages, 2:00 minutes with cover, 8 page booklet.

My setting of the hymn tune Diademata ('Crown Him with Many Crowns') consists of three treatments of the tune. The first begins with a brief introduction, followed by the tune (played on a trumpet-en-chamade stop), contrasted with a rhythmically active accompaniment. After a brief modulatory interlude, the second treatment offers a stately 4-voice harmonization for manuals alone. Another brief interlude then modulates back to the original tonic. The final treatment in 12/8 meter presents the tune in long, ponderous notes in the pedal, while a 2-voice accompaniment in the hands provides a sprightly stream of eighth-notes that serve as a counterweight. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

The first theme starts with the G minor scale that reaches to a perfect fifth above the tonic before descending to the home key. The second theme is related to the first one, but it begins with the perfect-fifth upward movement followed by its stepwise descent, and is written in a fugal manner. The latter half of the work is a toccata written in the style of the late 19th century and early 20th century French organ music; in that section, the pedal division states the main theme against the rapid 16th notes on the manuals in the key of G Major. Technical demands include a good sense of rhythm, a steady beat and a slight legato touch. This movement is suitable for recital and education uses; it may also be performed as a postlude in church services. I wish you the best in taking a look at this piece; so, enjoy it.

Passacaglia (2000-2012) for Organ - 6 minutes This piece exists in versions for organ (this one - the original version in 2000) and orchestra (performed by Bristol University Symphony Orchestra under the baton of John Pickard in 2001), and finally a piano duet version completed in 2012. The theme is based on the ground bass from Bach’s stonking Passacaglia in C minor for organ. However, the implied harmonies of Bach’s original ground bass are treated to some twisted harmonies – where each chord is altered using a system of harmonic substitution - swapping each chord implication for a newly chosen one (Cm=C, Fm=F#, G=A, Dm=A¨, Eb=F and on it goes around the 12 chromatic notes). Each key therefore has a ‘dominant’ and ‘subdominant’ that are not the actual chords V and IV in that key, so the traditional cadences and chord relationships are supplanted by 12 individual 3-chord relationships – one set of three chords for each of the 12 (now almost exclusively major) keys. In an attempt to recreate the pulls of the traditional tonic-dominant-subdominant relationships, each key then also has a particular mode/scale with particular added notes that are designed to recreate the sense of moving away from and back towards the home chord of that key. This results in a lot of rich added harmonies and some idiomatic voice-leading. Bach’s original theme in Cm is: C G - E¨ F - G A¨ - F G - D E¨ - B C - F G - C, and in the opening statement of the ground bass this has become: C A - E F# - A B¨ - F# A - D# E - C# C - F# A - C. There are then 21 variations which modulate through a range of keys, during which the ground bass is constantly re-adjusted to fit the new harmonic areas. It starts in C major, then goes through ‘closely’ related keys (eg A major and A¨ major), and then back to C in variations 6, 9 and 11. This kind of arch then happens again but going through more distant keys before returning to C in variations 18, 19 and the final climactic variation 21. Leaving aside the structural and tonal nuts and bolts, my aim was to compose a piece that attempts to recapture some of the nobility and beauty of Bach's Passacaglia, with rich added note harmonies, and exuding an exuberant joy.

Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q2398). Hermann Schroeder (1904–1984) ranks among the major German organ composers of the 20th century, being an excellent organist himself. Many of his more than 100 organ works deal with themes of the Gregorian chorale. The chorale's modal diatonicism which is freer and different than the later major-minor tonality establishes a perfect symbiosis with the free tonality of the contemporary composer. In the five-movement chorale partita, the more than 1,000 years old Mixolydian Whitsun Sequence of Hrabanus Maurus (9th century) is used in an imaginative and formally varied way: as a virtuoso toccata, in the second movement 'ostinato' as a strict trio setting over a seven-bar ostinato in the pedal, as a capriciously playful 'bicinium', and as a meditative, harmonically appealing 'arioso'. The fifth movement (fantasia ricercare) displays brilliant full-handed chords and virtuoso passages as well as a fugato in the middle section. A rewarding concert piece for Whitsun, with an excellent possibility of virtuoso interpretation and colourful registration.

Many of his more than 100 organ works deal with themes of the Gregorian chorale which Schroeder appreciated very much. The chorale's modal diatonicism which is freer and different than the later major-minor tonality establishes a perfect symbiosis with the free tonality of the contemporary composer. Among the church modes, the 'tonus peregrinus' is the most interesting because it has two alternating reciting tones and therefore does not fit into the common pattern of the eight church modes. Since it 'modulates', it is a stranger, a 'peregrinus', among the tones – and therefore of special interest to composers. It forms the basis of the old Gregorian Magnificat, Bach used it in his Magnificat, Mozart in the introit of his requiem. Schroeder used the tonus peregrinus to achieve interesting harmonic and tonal effects, thus creating a virtuoso cycle of ten effective and colourful variations. A rewarding piece for church services and concerts.

The pedal exercises at the beginning are fundamental and should be practiced in all keys with gradually increasing tempo. The structure of this method is based on the increasing polyphony: two-part pieces are followed by three-and multi-part pieces. Studying the strict structure of the polyphonic compositions, getting a feel of the liveliness of these parts, their coming, going and returning, all this, with the knowledge of harmonic form and architectonic values, provides the essential background for the correct interpretation of polyphonic music, especially of the fugue. The most important musical forms have been used to illustrate the various possibilities of registration and its relationship to style (colourful, solo and smooth playing).Progress within this method is made in a winding pattern, i.e. by falling frequently back on earlier aspects, through the juxtaposition of special stylistic and formal features, in order to consolidate them or add to variety. It is very important that the evolution of organ music from vocal music should be made clear to the student the very beginning, both musically and intellectually. He will be shown the technical evolution of organ music over the centuries and thus be prepared for a really artistic performance and interpretation of old and new works on his instrument, especially for the incomparable art of our great Johann Sebastian Bach.Wer nach dieser Schule das Orgelspiel erlernen will, muss schon eine gewisse technische Fertigkeit auf dem Klavier besitzen. The variations explore sounds, textures, styles, and techniques of different organ traditions, from the German Baroque to early twentieth-century French. Harmonically, too, the variations cover a wide range, from fully diatonic to heavily chromatic. After the last variation is an extended finale, which presents the hymn tune, in augmentation, in canon between bass and soprano while the other voices provide dense counterpoint in between. The piece concludes with a blistering pedal solo under a series of unexpected and pungent chords. This is a work that strives to inspire awe and wonder.Technical note: the variety of textures and styles in this piece requires a well-rounded technique. Likewise the variety of sounds and styles will be better served by a larger instrument.
