About the arranger: I am a graduate of Shorter College, Rome, Georgia (Bachelor
of Church Music) and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky
(Master of Church Music). I am the organist (1996 to present) and music director
(2008 to present) at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Fayetteville, Georgia. I have
been married to Denise for 43 years and we have been blessed with three (now
grown) children; Blake, Brett, and Brooke - with two grandsons, Bennett and
Julian, and three granddaughters, Lily, Colette, and Harper Rose.

Hymnody, choral music, arranging, and composing are my musical passions. I
appreciate the opportunity to share the above with you.

This improvisation on the well known chorale tune is done for single manual and pedal organ. It is suitable for service playing or recital work. Scored as improvised by Mark Andersen.

The prelude is written in a quasi baroque style with the choral melody phrases in the pedal, the intonation is to prepare the choral to be sung and the postlude in a more modern toccata style is for the end of a service.

The choralepreludes in this volume combine traditional classical form with stilistic elementsof Celtic folk music such as dance rhythms, syncopation, and ornamental figuresthat give them a certain lightness.

Almost allchorals, almost all of which are ecumenical, were composed for practical use. Therefore,they are mostly kept quite short (about 1 min.) and quote the chorale melodycompletely as cantus firmus in the approximate singing tempo. Some preludes have a quasi baroque design, but most also have a certain Celtic flavor. Indications aboutstops have been omitted, the indications SW (Swell) and HW(Great) just indicatewhere the c. f. is to be emphasized. The preludes arefollowed by accompanying movements. This score is based on the old British Carol "I saw three ships." There are seven variations preceding the fugue. After the theme has been stated, the first two variations extend the theme; the third variation introduces the pedals. The next three variations are in the style of Baroque genres: the fourth variation is a noel written as an homage to Daquin; the fifth variation is a figured chorale, in which the chorale Von Himmel hoch, da komm ich her makes its first appearance; and the sixth is a Handelian rigaudon. The seventh variation is a "carillion" in which Von Himmel hoch reappears. After a dramatic, dissonant chord, the score concludes with a chorale fugue during which Von Himmel hoch appears in the pedal. Composed for and dedicated to David Higgs, in celebration of his twenty-five years of teaching at the Eastman School of Music. Duration: 6:45.
