Total Duration: ~10 to 15 minutes depending upon taking the repeats and varying the tempo.Performance Notes Introduction This piece boldly explores the B♠Major key and related tonalities. It yields exciting moves to tease the audience’s appetite for the real treats of the variations. The key to performing this piece is to feel and emphasize the half-note rhythm and play the phrases against it. Dynamics are up to the performer. Theme & Variations The delight for the performer and listener is to emphasize the unique traits of each variation while celebrating their similarities. A great audience toe-tapper (mostly!). Each variation’s title indicates how to play it; further notes below. 1 PLAYFUL Stretches the theme’s rhythms for a friendly teasing. 2 MAJESTIC This variation indulges in the compound meter exploration of the theme. Emphasize the linear lines and the ornamental notes will shine. 3 BRIGHT Practice the intervallic phrasing until you can hear what note follows which. Then bang it around for a jaunty, vigorous performance. 4 AGILE Practice slow then add speed. The luscious 16th notes energize the phrases and give them wit. 5 TEARFUL Let the notes do the work-don’t try too hard. 6 FESTIVE Must use repeats. A gigue that washes away the previous variation’s mood. Always emphasize the one-two bounce feel throughout. 7 TREMENDOUS Molto expressivo. This A section is anguish; B is reflective, loving, and then tender. 8 CHICKEN Chicken chickens chicken. Chicken! 9 FANTASTICAL No repeats: just a glorious monstrosity of extraordinariness. Get ugly. 10 MARCH Must use repeats. If you clip the dotted notes and focus on the one-two, one-two march rhythm, the melody will soar. 11 BLUES Be sure to swing it and adjust the tempo so the bluesy sound comes through. 12 A CARNIVAL NEAR VENICE Akin to variation 2. Practice it slow and build up speed. Nothing more than the theme with a compound voice in the upper register. 13 FUGUE Distinguish the two lines and it’ll be like playing two tubas simultaneously. Practice slow to learn to differentiate the two voices and it’ll be a dazzler. 14 FAREWELL A bittersweet mixture of bold thankfulness for the joyous discoveries and sadness for having to say goodbye. Be aggressive with the arpeggios for the harmony to resound.

The soloist then presents the tune with subtle modifications. The second section progresses with even greater melodic enhancement. With a modulation the solo deviates the melody with an almost obbligato-like fashion. With further modulation the solo line gravitates to a style reminiscent to the second section. The coda section is patterned after the first section and then settles down to sweet silence.Key of Ab, Bb.

When I originally spoke with Sande MacMorran, the tuba player for whom I composed the piece, we discussed the technicalities of the instrument; its optimal range, timbre, and articulation. Sande mentioned, in passing, that the rhythm of swing music is a natural fit for the instrument and even sang a few lines to give examples.In the following days, when I began to plan the new composition, I was surprised that the idea of playing ping-pong unexpectedly took hold of my mind and I couldn’t shake it off. At first, it seemed random and unrelated, but then, as I thought about the rhythmic patterns of the game, it all became clear.In ping-pong, the paddle hits the ball and then the ball hits the table in a pattern reminiscent of the rhythm of swing. While beginners tend to play slower, in triplets, the professionals, much faster, with the table note dotted or even double-dotted. Once I realized what my subconscious was trying to tell me, I listened to (not merely watched) several videos of ping-pong matches and discovered a wealth of entertaining rhythmic patterns. Thus the idea for this miniature tuba piece was born.While the tuba may seem a clumsy and awkward instrument, it is actually quite agile and flexible. It can perform many challenging melodic figures or quick jumps between registers, and it can certainly play ping-pong.Total duration: 1’25, suitable for advanced players.

Published by Slide Ride (A0.784337). 1 Octave Scale Studies in 15+ keys for 4-part ensembles of like or mixed instruments If this is your first exposure to these scale studies, you are in for a treat! Donuts, if you make a mistake!The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.· Choose a tempo.· Choose a dynamic.· Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!Enjoy!

Programme Notes: Icarus Also Flew takes its title from the first line of the poem Failing and Flying by Jack Gilbert. He is referring to the classical myth of Daedalus and Icarus, an inventive father and son who bravely escape from their imprisonment in a tower by collecting the disposed feathers of seabirds, then fashion wings out of them and fly away. While the story is often treated as a morality tale--listen to your elders, don’t get cocky like the young man, Icarus, who, in such an understandable state of elation, ascended too close to the sun thus causing the wings to melt and his tumbling to his Mediterranean death--what Jack Gilbert reminds us is how regardless of one’s failure, the sheer transcendental experience of mortal flight remains glorious and unforgettable. Icarus’s fall was not into a legacy of disdain and oblivion, but in truth, he had come to the end of his triumph. This piece was the first of a series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies--his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!--though they can all stand on their own on any program. The connection, in this case, is with his celebrated fifth symphony in C minor--the Fate symphony, as it is commonly known. I’ll let the listener find their own connections.About the Composer:Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

As in the other Mosaic works (all available via Sheet Music Plus), a series of early, unrelated sketches were reworked to create this piece. Mosaic VI continues the preoccupation with arch form. It features and juxtaposes six highly contrasting ideas. The first theme explores snap rhythms as well as semitone and tone steps. The second idea is a chromatic and jaunty 6/8 scherzando, followed by a modal third theme in 2/2. A fourth theme explores rhythmic displacement, as well as fast octatonic scales, while a major key fifth idea is more conventionally song-like. The final, striding sixth theme is then followed by varied recollections of the previous themes in reverse, adhering to the arch-like structure of the work. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for advanced tuba players.

The Serenade for solo Tuba was premiered by James Anderson, Professor of Tuba at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London, England in May 1980. My only question is, why did it take so long to get published and into the repertoire of serious tubists all over the globe? It is definitely a welcome addition to the library of the solo tubist. Good solo pieces that are entertaining for audiences are quite hard to come by. This piece will most assuredly be one of those to join the ranks of Penderecki's Capriccio and Gregson's Alarum. The Serenade is set up in three movements and is metered throughout. The range of the work is from DD-g1. Movement One entitled March, is in 2/4 and m.m. equals 112. It is quite spirited in style and will require a performer with agile abilities to navigate through wide intervals and varied articulations. Movement Two is not your typical slow, melodic song that one would imagine from a title such as Elegy. It is extremely doloroso in nature and has the soloist soaring into the extreme upper range (g1) utilizing strict rhythmic patterns. The Gallop, movement three, is quite animated and encompasses mixed meters with the majority of the piece being in 6/8. Just when you think your triplets are moving along, a duple figure is thrown in to add variety to the melodic lines, which is actually quiet refreshing and prevents it from becoming a boring, technical exercise. As was stated before, this work will require a performer with great technique. Not for the less than advanced tubist. If you have conquered the other reputable solo tuba pieces, then this one should definitely be next. Raul I. Rodriguez Tuba Journal 1998. The burn is 13 km long, and formed from a number of small streams draining off Slate Hill, Killhope Moor, Knoutberry Hill, near the county borders with Cumbria, Northumberland and County Durham. The Burn flows roughly south-eastwards down stone falls, meandering around the plantation at Killhope Lead Mine museum and then onwards past our cottage into Cowshill and finally Wearhead.This work seeks to describe that tumbling, meandering, rushing journey until peace reigns at the end as the burn finds its resting place in the Wear.
