It makes a lovely arrangement for the 4-part mixed woodwind combination of 2 flutes, oboe and clarinet/bassoon.The tune is a variant on an old melody collected in the Moidart district of Scotland in 1870. Words were later added by Harold Boulton, who also wrote the lyrics to the more famous Skye Boat Song. Renowned for its salmon fishing, Loch Tay is the sixth largest freshwater loch in Scotland, stretching from Killin up to Aberfeldy. A number of local landmarks are mentioned in the words of the Loch Tay Boat Song.

This tune comes from The Gondoliers, the twelfth of the Victorian comic opera collaborations between WS Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. The Gondoliers premiered in December 1889 and ran for 554 performances. To be a Regular Royal Queen is part of the finale to Act 1. Two of the principal gondoliers and two of the contadine sing of what they perceive as the perks of being royalty – such as rich clothing, valuable possessions and being universally admired and respected.The piece makes a joyful, appealing arrangement for the four-part mixed woodwind combination of 2 flutes, oboe and either clarinet in B-flat or bassoon. It has been classed as 'intermediate' as, although it appears quite challenging, various adult learner groups have managed it surprisingly successfully. To increase the difficulty, increase the tempo!

His original set, Opus 48, had proved to be something of a breakthrough work, finally establishing Dvořák’s reputation well beyond his native land.The dances are original melodies, inspired by, and drawing on, the character of traditional national dances – not, as is sometimes thought, works based on existing folk tunes, as was the fashion among composers at around that time. Both sets of Slavonic Dances were originally written for piano 4 hands but, in response to a request from his publisher, the composer produced orchestrated versions shortly afterwards.This is an arrangement for semi-flexible mixed woodwind quartet of 2 flutes, oboe and either B-flat clarinet or bassoon. Although reasonably successful in his native Austria, Franz Schubert (1797 – 1828) achieved widespread recognition only after his death, when a number of influential 19th Century composers – including Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms and Dvorak – discovered and championed his writing. Like many of Schubert’s works, the Impromptu Op. 142, No 2 was not published during his lifetime. The piece is in the form of a minuet and trio. This version consists only of the minuet section – a charming melody with chordal accompaniment. It is a personal favourite!

This cheerful jig originates from the North of England (although some sources suggest Ireland) and, as with many traditional tunes, it exists in a number of slightly different variants. The Oyster Girl is often used for Morris or maypole dancing, as well as being a popular pub session tune. Here, the tune is arranged for 4-part mixed woodwind combination of 2 flutes, oboe and either clarinet in B-flat or bassoon. As well as being an enjoyable, upbeat piece to perform, this arrangement is also ideal as a demonstration of the different tone colours of the instruments, as each takes a turn with the melody.Although classed as 'intermediate', the difficulty of the piece really depends on how fast you attempt to play it!

A traditional fiddle tune from Scotland's Shetland Isles, arranged here for 4-part mixed woodwind combination of 2 flutes, oboe and either clarinet in B-flat or bassoon. This piece makes a lively addition to general repertoire, or can be used in a recital programme either as a light-hearted interlude or an upbeat encore. Although classed as 'intermediate', the difficulty level depends very much on the speed at which the piece is played!The title of The Merry Boys of Greenland appears with many subtle variations – ‘the’ is sometimes replaced by ‘da’, ‘of’ by ‘o’’ and ‘merry’ as ‘merrie’ or ‘mirrie’. It is believed that the ‘Merry Boys’ of the tune may have been recruited from the Shetland Isles (the northernmost island group off the coast of Scotland) to form the crew for whaling expeditions to the seas between Greenland and Canada.

This minuet is the third movement from Eine Kleine Nachtmusik – the Serenade No. 13 for Strings in G Major, K.525 – one of Mozart’s best known works. Scholars suspect that the piece was written under commission, although no records exist of who might have commissioned it, or when it was first performed. Eine Kleine Nachtmusik was not published during the composer’s lifetime – it was one item in a bundle of works that his widow Constanze sold to a publisher some time after Mozart's death.This minuet from Eine Kleine Nachtmusik makes a charming recital piece or appealing addition to general repertoire. The semi-flexible instrumentation allows for use with several slightly different player line-ups.

A popular, traditional English folk song arranged here for the 4-part mixed woodwind combination of two flutes, oboe and either clarinet in B-flat or bassoon.Greensleeves is sometimes credited to Henry VIII, the style of composition suggests a later, Elizabethan, origin. The piece appears in various late sixteenth and early seventeenth century manuscript collections and is mentioned in Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, which was written around 1597. The founder of the Mr Whippy ice cream company had a particular interest in Henry VIII and, believing him to be the composer of Greensleeves, chose the tune to use as the jingle heralding the arrival of his ice cream vans.

C Melville-Mason #6867577. Published by C Melville-Mason (A0.956671). The Maple Leaf Rag is an early work by the African-American ragtime composer, Scott Joplin. It was first published in 1899, although Joplin had been performing it for some years prior to this. The composer was confident that the work would be a commercial success and, indeed, in due course, royalties from the piece provided him with a stable income for life. Joplin wanted The Maple Leaf Rag performed at his funeral. His widow opted not to honour this request, feeling that the music was stylistically inappropriate for such a sad occasion – a decision she later regretted.This arrangement for mixed woodwind quartet of 2 flutes, oboe and either clarinet or bassoon is pretty challenging, both in terms of technique and stamina, hence its classification as 'advanced intermediate'. If desired, players could opt to finish at the change of key at letter F, rather than performing the complete piece.

Mairi’s Wedding (or the Lewis Bridal Song) is generally regarded as a Scottish folk tune, though it is accredited to J R Bannerman in 1934, who composed the song to celebrate Mary C McNiven winning the prestigious gold medal for singing at that year’s National Mod competition. The original song was in Gaelic – English words were added later, though these give the song a rather different character. In Scotland, the tune is used as a pipe band march and for Scottish country dancing. It can frequently be heard at some stage during a wedding celebration!

Over 10 years later, Grieg selected certain elements from this work, organising these into two orchestral suites. The Death of Åse features in the first suite, Op. 46, along with Morning, Anitra’s Dance and In the Hall of the Mountain King. Åse is the mother of Peer Gynt. When her son absconds with the daughter of an affluent local farmer, Åse sacrifices everything to pay the penalties on his behalf and, left destitute, dies of poverty and illness. Cheery stuff!Although fairly straightforward in terms of notes and rhythms, this piece has been classed as 'intermediate' as it requires good intonation and ensemble skills to perform effectively.
