A bass and percussion line make a big difference to the resulting sound - the bass line could be played on bells / chimes, electronic bass, double bass or even on an organ. He Is So Good is a 3-4-5 octave, 45 measure medley of the Christian hymns God Is So Good and At the Cross (Alas, and Did My Savior Bleed) arranged for 3-4-5 octave handbell choirs. Because of the inclusion of At the Cross, this arrangement might be suitable for Easter/Lent. The overall theme is the love of God for us, whether as the Father or as Jesus. The strategy of this arrangement is to start out softly and *very* plainly and build---both in volume and in complexity. From the chorus of At the Cross to the end, a lot of doubling of the melody in the highest bells is used. There are two surprise modulations used in the chorus of At the Cross. In At the Cross there are chords used that are more interesting than those in the original hymn. After the triple-forte volume level at the end, there is a mezzo-piano tag, echoing the melody of the preceding musical phrase, with a chord progression that is substantially different from the original version of this hymn. This arrangement is probably a 3 plus (3+) level of difficulty, with the plus being due to some eighth-note runs in the bass line towards the end of At the Cross. The demonstration audio file provided is in a piano voice (patch) but suffices to demonstrate how the arrangement is generally meant to sound.

This glorious festival hymn arrangement begins with a fanfare introduction, followed by a straightforward setting of the first verse sung in unison. The second verse features the choir in four parts, accompanied by the bells and organ only. The brass and timpani join in on the third verse, which features a malleted or plucked bass line in the handbells, creating a march-like feel. A fanfare interlude precedes the majestic fourth verse, which features a soaring soprano descant, and a brief choral Amen concludes the arrangement. The Power of the One is a 67 measure, 4-5 octave medley of Christian hymns whose unifying theme is the Power of the (One) God. This medley is comprised of I Sing the Mighty Power of God, Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above, Eternal Father, Strong to Save (The Navy Hymn) and He Is Able to Deliver Thee. The first two of these hymns are upbeat, and include some melody doubling into the highest octave. Those two and the last hymn make use of occasional descant lines. He Is Able to Deliver Thee is very lively, and utilizes both an occasional descant line, and (fairly fast) bass runs. In between Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above and He Is Able to Deliver Thee, you have the slower, and much more reverential Eternal Father, Strong to Save (also known as The Navy Hymn), which uses handchimes, although bells can be substituted for the chimes. This selection helps add a contrast in style, tempo and volume to the other three. At the end, there is a tag consisting of the last part of Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above at a slower tempo, and at a triple forte dynamic level, for a grandioso ending. The fast bass runs contribute to my thinking that this arrangement is probably a 3+ difficulty level.

Within this arrangement are descant lines, doubling of the melody line, at times, and some bass runs, and triplets. It probably is a level 3 difficulty arrangement---maybe a 3+ (3 plus). There is a juxtaposition of styles, dynamic levels and tempos within this arrangement, for the sake of variety. The first verse of God of our Fathers is done rather straight-forwardly as a setup for the next verse, where the fanfare portions are significantly different from the original. There is also a fanfare tag at the end. The audio demonstration clip is in a piano voice (patch) but suffices to demonstrate how the arrangement is generally meant to sound.

It is a medley of Christian hymns that deal with some of the attributes of God, as they relate to His followers. Specifically, it includes Abide with Me, God Will Take Care of You, Day by Day and Just When I Need Him Most. It is probably a level 3+ arrangement. The God Will Take Care of You section starts with a duet in the handchimes, with the melody line switching from treble clef to bass clef, in the verse. Of course, handbells can be used instead of handchimes, if desired. In the chorus, martellato is used in the bass clef, while there is a descant going on in the high treble clef, with the melody sandwiched in between. In the last section (Just When I Need Him Most) interesting chords, bass runs and melody line doubling, with chords filled in between the doubled melody notes, build to an ending culminating in a repeat of the last musical phrase, at a slower, more majestic tempo. The first 3 selections are more laid-back; the last is presented in a more energetic fashion.

Including the brief introduction and the slightly elongated ending, it takes 2 minutes and 7 seconds to perform at the suggested tempo markings. Praising God is the obvious underlying and unifying theme. There is a doubled descant line in the first half of For the Beauty of the Earth---then, during the last line---shakes and tolls (swings). Melody doubling is used in the second hymn. The difficulty level is about 3 or 3+ primarily due to the eighth-note bass runs in the first two hymns.

An accelerated tempo leads ringers into a new key with much dynamic movement. Ringers will enjoy the challenge of ringing this fast-paced and energetic piece.

With cascading seventh chords and a hymn-like melody, Twilight reflects a peaceful evening as the last sunlight fades into a star-studded night sky. Storm opens with swirling fourths and a dramatic melody in the bass. The whirling winds of the trebles are frequently broken by musical thunder in the bass and an ascending lightning motif-the storm lulls and surges, reaching a rapid and dramatic finale. Scott R. Hummel is a composer and musician from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Scott holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Bachelor of Music in Audio and Music Production from Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania. He has performance experience in keyboard instruments, choral music, and percussion. His introduction to the carillon came through listening to the 62-bell instrument housed in the Chimes Tower at Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Scott also serves as an instructor for the North American Carillon School where he teaches music theory. In addition to carillon, Scott has written for various other mediums, including choir, pipe organ, and percussion.
