Published by Bronze:FX (A0.1307850). This arrangement of “From the New World†(Third Movement) is for full bell choir using 4-6 octaves of handbells. When played with 12 ringers, the piece is rated at Level 5.Filled with interesting and contrasting rhythms and techniques, this arrangement is fun to play and thoroughly enjoyable to hear. Each range of the bells is featured in different ways at different times in the piece. The middle bells have a lot of rhythm and technique changes which are not very difficult and will keep the ringers smiling. The super bass bells sometimes play the part of the timpani or strong brass, and at other times have a counter melody all their own. The high bells may carry the melody (often doubled in octaves), but that same melody is often echoed in the other bell ranges as well just a beat or two later.The arranger recommends that ringers listen to an orchestral recording of this composition. It is arranged in the same key, and (if you can) could be rehearsed together.  If you have enough hands available, the arranger provides suggestions for an added triangle part.This arrangement is dedicated to Bay Bells, an advanced community handbell choir that the arranger Cheryl (Sutton) Baker (also known as Cheryl Woldseth) directed from 1986 to 1997. Under her leadership, Bay Bells and the subset Bay Bells Ensemble performed throughout California, Oregon, Nevada, and Hawaii, plus they toured Indonesia in 1996 and also performed at the 1996 International Handbell Symposium in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Caravan is one of Duke Ellington's (1899-1974) most famous compositions—although he didn't actually write it. That credit goes to Puerto Rican trombonist Juan Tizol (1900-1984), a member of the Ellington's big band from 1929 to 1944. Tizol composed the theme in 1936 and promptly sold the rights to lyricist Irving Mills for only $25. The song became an instant hit—jazz critic Ted Gioia expllains that it fit perfectly with the musical exoticism that patrons were demanding at [Ellington's] regular gig at the Cotton Club in Harlem. Indeed, much jazz from this era, especially Ellington's, was steeped in Orientalist aesthetics. Although we hear it now as a self-contained musical phenomenon, we must acknowledge this music's problematics even as we continue to celebrate its progressive and revolutionary qualities. Part of my interest in this piece is in its capacity as a vessel in which I can explore my own multiform identity as an expatriate of the Middle East, a carillonist, and a lover of jazz. This arrangement reflects what might happen when these three perspectives collide. Ellington recorded Caravan more than 100 times, and the names of its additional interpreters reads as a history of jazz itself: Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, Nat King Cole, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis and dozens more all brought their own spin to the tune. What makes it particularly special, though, is its appeal to listeners outside the jazz fandom. The 2014 film Whiplash introduced mass audiences to the song's unique atmosphere and to the genius of the Duke and his sidemen, thanks to an outstanding big band arrangement by John Wasson. My setting of the tune for the carillon recalls both Duke and Tizol's original version and this more recently popular edition.In this arrangement, I hope to highlight the carillon's capacity as a percussion instrument, and to use this as a bridge into the world of jazz. Written about a town in Eastern France, this composition evokes feelings of warmth and sentiment. The handbell arrangement incorporates all these parts. The bells ring the accompaniment parts and the soprano solo while the handchimes ring the contralto solo. The lowest bass line is always malleted while the upper bass line has an interesting and challenging eighth note pattern. Differentiating between accompaniment and solo lines, making the listener aware of both soprano and contralto solo lines, and ringing the piece at a brisk tempo will prove quite challenging to the advanced bell choir.
