Hummel Music (A0.944197). Two Impressions of the Sky presents contrasting movements, Twilight and Storm. With cascading seventh chords and a hymn-like melody, Twilight reflects a peaceful evening as the last sunlight fades into a star-studded night sky. Storm opens with swirling fourths and a dramatic melody in the bass. The whirling winds of the trebles are frequently broken by musical thunder in the bass and an ascending lightning motif-the storm lulls and surges, reaching a rapid and dramatic finale. Scott R. Hummel is a composer and musician from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Scott holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Bachelor of Music in Audio and Music Production from Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania. He has performance experience in keyboard instruments, choral music, and percussion. His introduction to the carillon came through listening to the 62-bell instrument housed in the Chimes Tower at Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Scott also serves as an instructor for the North American Carillon School where he teaches music theory. In addition to carillon, Scott has written for various other mediums, including choir, pipe organ, and percussion. His involvement in the music industry extends beyond composition and performance to audio engineering and lighting design. Scott continues to compose and arrange new works for carillon. Published by Bronze:FX (A0.1307850). This arrangement of “From the New World†(Third Movement) is for full bell choir using 4-6 octaves of handbells. When played with 12 ringers, the piece is rated at Level 5.Filled with interesting and contrasting rhythms and techniques, this arrangement is fun to play and thoroughly enjoyable to hear. Each range of the bells is featured in different ways at different times in the piece. The middle bells have a lot of rhythm and technique changes which are not very difficult and will keep the ringers smiling. The super bass bells sometimes play the part of the timpani or strong brass, and at other times have a counter melody all their own. The high bells may carry the melody (often doubled in octaves), but that same melody is often echoed in the other bell ranges as well just a beat or two later.The arranger recommends that ringers listen to an orchestral recording of this composition. It is arranged in the same key, and (if you can) could be rehearsed together.  If you have enough hands available, the arranger provides suggestions for an added triangle part.This arrangement is dedicated to Bay Bells, an advanced community handbell choir that the arranger Cheryl (Sutton) Baker (also known as Cheryl Woldseth) directed from 1986 to 1997. Under her leadership, Bay Bells and the subset Bay Bells Ensemble performed throughout California, Oregon, Nevada, and Hawaii, plus they toured Indonesia in 1996 and also performed at the 1996 International Handbell Symposium in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The bass must provide a solid foundation, but never be overbearing. Plucked sounds would create a sharp accent and quick decay; malletted sounds should be much softer; martellati would be quite harsh.Exceptional skill and endurance is required of the F5+G5 and A5+B5 ringers, who must maintain a contant but subtle off-beat pulse throughout.The tempo must remain steady and without rubato, until the final two measures.Performance time:  4 minutes.
