Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1001565). This is an arrangement for 2-4 octave handbell choir of If I Had a Hammer.This protest song was written in 1950 in support of the progressive movement. The song was written by Pete Seeger and Lee Hays for the folk group The Weavers. It was made famous by the group Peter, Paul, and Mary and the singer Trini Lopez whose versions both charted in the top 10 on the charts in the 1960s.This version is arranged for 2-4 octave handbell choir and makes heavy use of mallets for most of the piece. There are some very quick changes between using mallets and normal ringing and there are a lot of syncopated rhythms throughout the piece. These challenges make this arrangement ideal for smaller bell choirs that are still at a intermediate or higher playing ability. Even though the song is not specifically intended for church services, the message of the song can be incorporated into quite a variety of religious themes.The arrangement is in the key of C with no accidentals. I will always be grateful to the wonderful, dedicated ladies who were members of the Mickler Handbell Choir. I was blessed to lead them for over twelve years, and all of them were always an encouragement to me, and are the reason why Lahairoi was written. Lahairoi is a Hebrew word which means The well of the Living One who sees me and was inspired by Genesis 16:13. She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: You are the God who sees me, for she said, I have now seen the One who sees me.It is my hope that Lahairoi will provide Handbell Choirs with a song that they will enjoy performing, as they praise God with the music of handbells.

It is flowing and meditative, with colorful LV patterns and melody both in the bass and treble.The arrangement is for full bell choir using 3-6 octaves of handbells. Rated at a Level 2 when played with 11-12 ringers because of its slow tempo and easy rhythms, “A Stroll on ‘Duke Street’†can be interpreted very musically, with crescendos and spiritually high moments. Its three verses are each treated differently, with the last verse raises the key signature a half step and then yet another half step as it grows with intensity. Although based on a hymn tune, the title allows this arrangement to be used for any audience.For sacred environments, the arranger suggests that the text be studied for inspiration. There are several words set to the tune “Duke Street,†although the arranger favors the text that begins, “I know that my redeemer lives.†When performing the piece, use the first verse as a humble (and somewhat hesitant) prayer, the second verse more confident (by relying for God's promises), and the third verse as if obtaining divine reassurance. Here is an easy opportunity to have your beginners play an arrangement harmonized with counterpoint. All notes are on the treble clef. There are two distinct melodic lines, the top having stems up, and the bottom having stems down. If your students are ready to count quarter notes, half notes, and whole notes they are ready to play this and sound great! The counterpoint is very complimentary to the melody, keeping a nice momentum and harmonically balanced sound. Your students and audience will enjoy this. I arranged it for my first and second grade bell choir, and it was their first experience playing tone chimes.
