Sometime in the early 1900’s, it was also paired with a William Rees text, Here is Love Vast as the Ocean. Karen has lifted up her own Welsh ancestry by arranging this lovely, lyrical tune for handbells. It is appropriate for worship and also provides a quiet change of pace in concert settings. If desired it may be played along with a 36 string harp, which has a separate but compatible score.

This originally orchestral vocal standard was made popular by Duke Ellington and collaborators Billy Strayhorn, Adelaide Hall (who, while offstage, hummed an obligato while the band played the selection on-stage), and ostensibly Cab Calloway. Research into the development of this tune is confused. Both Calloway's and Hall's lyrics can be found, but there is no information where the words go. In most recordings the singer, if present, lyricizes syllables rather than words. In any case, this handbell arrangement catches the spirit of the standard, which was rife with instrumental improvizatiolns; some improvization is scored here. The price listed allows you ten (10) copies of the handbell score.

Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1144876). The Maid of Culmore is an Irish folk song with surprisingly little documentation. It is thought to date from some time in 1800s from near the city of Culmore, but not much else is known. The city of Culmore was a center for emigration and the lyrics of the song discuss a young man and the search for his love who had moved to America. This version is arranged for 12-bell ensemble by Mark R Lewis for the AGEHR 2022 Composing Masterclass. If played by a quintet or sextet, the piece is simply a matter of counting and keeping track of the melody but if this is played as a trio or quartet, the arrangement will be quite challenging with many instances of a player switching between melody and accompaniment parts multiple times a measure.

Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1144896). Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus is a lovely Advent hymn. The text was written by Charles Wesley and has been used in Advent services regularly since it was written in the 1740s. The text is often set to many tunes but the one used in this version is Hyfrydol, This tune was written by Rowland Prichard about 100 years after Wesley's text and is used extensively in many hymnals but especially for this particular text. This arrangement is for 3-5 octave handbell choir, although it is unusual in that the 4 octave version does require the use of the F3 bell. Other than that this is a relatively simple, if thickly orchestrated, arrangement. There are three sections using different methods of music making, the first is regular ringing, the second is extensive marts and mart-lifts, and the third explores musical canon before bringing back the more traditional bell ringing styles.

Sections using mallets, echoes, martellatos and shakes are employed, as Carolyn was a percussionist who loved techniques on handbells. The contrasting middle section is the blue period, and is best played on handchimes if possible. This work is suitable for worship, festivals and concerts. The alternate title, The Colors of Love, may be used in secular settings.

This piece could utilize up to 12 members, but usually many members play two bells, so it could be a piece for six ringers. We Gather Together is one of my favorite hymns, and I'm sure Maestro would agree that it has a lovely melody. Key of D, two pages, no key changes. Performance time is 1: 25 if you take the repeat, shorter without it. PRACTICE HINT:Â The dotted quarter note in the melody may be unfamiliar to some beginning handbell ringers. Some clapping exercises with the melody might be helpful. In addition, the second layer (those notes with stems going down) does not play the dotted rhythm. It would be wise to have those ringers practice their smooth, consistent lines before pairing them with the more syncopated melody.

Phrases of the carol melody are interspersed with original material that serves as interludes as well as the introduction. Handbells and handchimes alternate, with the chimes playing the introduction and interludes and the bells playing the carol melody. If desired, the handchime and handbell parts may be played antiphonally by two different choirs.
