I will always be grateful to the wonderful, dedicated ladies who were members of the Mickler Handbell Choir. I was blessed to lead them for over twelve years, and all of them were always an encouragement to me, and are the reason why Lahairoi was written. Lahairoi is a Hebrew word which means The well of the Living One who sees me and was inspired by Genesis 16:13. She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: You are the God who sees me, for she said, I have now seen the One who sees me.It is my hope that Lahairoi will provide Handbell Choirs with a song that they will enjoy performing, as they praise God with the music of handbells.

Sing We Now of Christmas is a wonderfully rhythmic minor key hymn that translates well to handbells, and beginning handbells at that! All within the span of less than an octave, this piece only requires six bells. If each ringer holds two bells, that makes only three ringers in all. My friend maestro said he likes the almost constant G on the second page, for he says it sounds like bells clanging in a tower, Christmas bells! Two pages, key of G minor, no key changes. Tempo set at 76 bpm, but challenge your choir to play this faster and see how that sounds!

This Allegro (the final movement)was originally scored for oboes, clarinets, English Horns, Horns in Eb, and Bassoons. Filled with life and energy, the work has many phrases, which quickly alternate between rung notes and staccato notes and can be thumb damped, plucked, or played with mallets. This piece should be rung at a brisk tempo, cleanly damped, and have the clarity and lightness typical of Mozart's early writing. Achieving this will make the piece more difficult than it may first appear. Those familiar with MozartAEs The Sleigh Ride and his Alleluia from EXSULTATE JUBILATE, will be able to hear elements of both in this delightful piece.

This Allegro (the final movement)was originally scored for oboes, clarinets, English Horns, Horns in Eb, and Bassoons. Filled with life and energy, the work has many phrases, which quickly alternate between rung notes and staccato notes and can be thumb damped, plucked, or played with mallets. This piece should be rung at a brisk tempo, cleanly damped, and have the clarity and lightness typical of Mozart's early writing. Achieving this will make the piece more difficult than it may first appear. Published by Chorister's Guild - Digital (C7.CGB1239). “Whoever believes in me, as scripture has said, ‘rivers of living water will flow from within them.’ This passage from John, chapter 7, illustrates faith in the wonderfully descriptive imagery of a small brook, trickling gently along its stony, wooded path. Gradually it becomes deeper and more active as it flows into a stream, then finally into a vital, rushing river. In this original composition for 3 or 5 octaves, handbells describe the scenario, starting with a simple melody surrounded by quiet randomly malleted bells, followed by a gently flowing section of moving LV bass underneath the treble melody. Gradually, the music develops into a strong, churning section of LV sixteenth notes, the melody above becoming more and more complex. As the piece draws to a close, it returns to the calmer, gentler sounds of the beginning. Living Water is a creative and thoughtful interpretation of the passage from John, and is appropriate in concert or worship when the focus is on faith and belief.

The + mostly has to do with the number of chromatic notes, although in general basic handbell techniques are used throughout. The audio sample begins after the 8 measure introduction.
