The Power of the One is a 67 measure, 4-5 octave medley of Christian hymns whose unifying theme is the Power of the (One) God. This medley is comprised of I Sing the Mighty Power of God, Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above, Eternal Father, Strong to Save (The Navy Hymn) and He Is Able to Deliver Thee. The first two of these hymns are upbeat, and include some melody doubling into the highest octave. Those two and the last hymn make use of occasional descant lines. He Is Able to Deliver Thee is very lively, and utilizes both an occasional descant line, and (fairly fast) bass runs. In between Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above and He Is Able to Deliver Thee, you have the slower, and much more reverential Eternal Father, Strong to Save (also known as The Navy Hymn), which uses handchimes, although bells can be substituted for the chimes. This selection helps add a contrast in style, tempo and volume to the other three. At the end, there is a tag consisting of the last part of Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above at a slower tempo, and at a triple forte dynamic level, for a grandioso ending. The fast bass runs contribute to my thinking that this arrangement is probably a 3+ difficulty level.

Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1001565). This is an arrangement for 2-4 octave handbell choir of If I Had a Hammer.This protest song was written in 1950 in support of the progressive movement. The song was written by Pete Seeger and Lee Hays for the folk group The Weavers. It was made famous by the group Peter, Paul, and Mary and the singer Trini Lopez whose versions both charted in the top 10 on the charts in the 1960s.This version is arranged for 2-4 octave handbell choir and makes heavy use of mallets for most of the piece. There are some very quick changes between using mallets and normal ringing and there are a lot of syncopated rhythms throughout the piece. These challenges make this arrangement ideal for smaller bell choirs that are still at a intermediate or higher playing ability. Even though the song is not specifically intended for church services, the message of the song can be incorporated into quite a variety of religious themes.The arrangement is in the key of C with no accidentals. The text of Of the Father's Love Begotten is an ancient Roman poem by Prudentius but the tune often used is the Plainsong Divinum myserium. This arrangement is for 12 bell ensemble by Mark R Lewis and even though there are several time signature changes, it is relatively simple. The changes in time signature are simply an artifact of the fact that old chants make the music follow the text and do not force the text to fit the music. In the accompanying video, we have added singing bell on C4 and G4 but this addition is optional for the performance. ​ Range: F5 - C7.

With cascading seventh chords and a hymn-like melody, Twilight reflects a peaceful evening as the last sunlight fades into a star-studded night sky. Storm opens with swirling fourths and a dramatic melody in the bass. The whirling winds of the trebles are frequently broken by musical thunder in the bass and an ascending lightning motif-the storm lulls and surges, reaching a rapid and dramatic finale. Scott R. Hummel is a composer and musician from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Scott holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Bachelor of Music in Audio and Music Production from Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania. He has performance experience in keyboard instruments, choral music, and percussion. His introduction to the carillon came through listening to the 62-bell instrument housed in the Chimes Tower at Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Scott also serves as an instructor for the North American Carillon School where he teaches music theory. In addition to carillon, Scott has written for various other mediums, including choir, pipe organ, and percussion. His involvement in the music industry extends beyond composition and performance to audio engineering and lighting design. Scott continues to compose and arrange new works for carillon. The lyrics ask the listener if they were there at Jesus' crucifixion and bring to mind contemplation of what the event would have been like. This arrangement by Mark R Lewis is for 3-5 octave handbell choir and adds handchimes for C5 to C7 as well. The singing bell technique is also utilized. This piece is potentially quite rhythmically challenging as there are many examples of triplet and duplet rhythms happening simultaneously. However, the actual techniques, bell changes, and overall difficulty of the parts is not too extreme, leading to a difficulty rating of 4-. Season: Holy Week, Good Friday Range: 3-5 octave.

The Saving Blood of Jesus is a 4-5 octave, 110 measure handbell choir arrangement, that is a medley of the Christian hymns: Nothing But the blood, Jesus Paid It All, The Old Rugged Cross, Down at the Cross, and There Is Power in the Blood. The theme of the arrangement is the blood of Jesus that was shed for us on the Cross. Three octaves of OPTIONAL handchimes (C4 through F6) are used in The Old Rugged Cross, but handbells can be substituted for the handchimes, if desired. There is a brief introduction (...No other Fount I know...). Throughout most of this arrangement, use is made of descant lines and bass runs. There are contrasting styles, tempos, key signatures and dynamic levels within. Only the subject matter remains constant. Because of the emphasis on the Crucifixion, it can also be used as Easter music. This is probably a 3+ or 4- level of difficulty. The audio clip supplied is in a piano voice (patch) but suffices to demonstrate how the arrangement is generally meant to sound.

Kelso Carter, a Methodist minister and teacher at the Pennsylvania Military Academy. The tune has a martial feel and has been a standard in many church hymnals since it was written. This arrangement by Mark R Lewis is for 3-5 octave handbell choir. There are very few bell changes but the tempo is quite upbeat leading to some difficulties, especially in the fanfare-like introduction. The arrangement is also in 12/8 which may appear difficult but allows a triplet feel more similar to how most people would actually sing the the dotted-eighth/sixteenth rhythms in the original tune. Most intermediate groups should be able to perform this arrangement with practice. The AGEHR ranking would be level 3.

I Sing the Mighty Power of God is a 51 measure arrangement for 4-5 octave handbell choir that has three contrasting verses based on the original Christian hymn. The first verse is fairly standard, except that some chord structures are used throughout the arrangement that are not the standard chords used in the original hymn. After the first verse (at the normal tempo) the tempo slows considerably, for a majestic effect, and the very lowest 4 octave bells are used for the melody line. At the same time, the chord structure here is provided by treble clef bells, from the bottom of the treble clef, through the highest note of the 5 octave range. This approach alternates with passages that are up to 5-octave unison passages. The early parts of the third verse are heavy on descant lines---sometimes descant chords instead of single-note descants, with a couple of bass runs in this verse, as well. There is a tag at the end---the last musical phrase is repeated with fuller chords at triple forte. There is a very non-standard chord, instead of the normal five-seven chord, right before the last chord. There is a brief shake on the first half of the last melody chord. This is probably about a level 2 degree of difficulty.

A second appearance of the heavenly bells is accompanied by chords using the echo technique. The carol is then combined with the 16th century Swedish tune Tempus Adest Floridum (Gentle Mary Laid Her Child; Good King Wenceslas). The heavenly bells ring one last time to conclude this joyful setting.

It is a Level 3+ piece in a bluesy, doo-wop style with plenty of syncopation, malleting, and four-in-hand flourishes.The piece hearkens back to singers on a street corner singing a basic doo-wop style song with improvisation over the top of a repeating bass pattern. This is a fun handbell arrangement suitable for community and school ensembles and is sure to get the audience clapping or at least snapping their fingers and tapping their feet.(Reproducible for one ensemble).
