ATON is a stage play written by Manfred Strolz and Otmar Rützler which represents Egypt in the time of the Pharoahs but seen through the eyes of modern theatre directors and actors. The modern scenes are spoken but the Egyptian scenes require music, so Manfred and Otmar asked me to write the music for these. The music is composed for various forces as the play progresses, from the full orchestra (woodwind, strings, harp, piano, timpani) and choir down to more intimate moments with single voice or duets, flute and classical guitar or with single voice and bassoon. For each section the pdf file contains score and parts and the sound sample is an electronic preview. As I write, 19 sections have been composed, but more are to come - please just search for Aton in due course for the full picture. The first performance is planned to take place in the Landestheater in Innsbruck during 2015.

Â I have created an arrangement with 4 variations with each variation getting further from the original theme and each progressing further into jazz. Â Variation I - I utilize rich chords of the ballads of that period while keeping the sung melody close to the original. Â Variation II - I rhythmically augment the melody, simplify the texture, and add chromatic passing tones and progressions. Â Variation III - I set this in stride jazz with syncopated riffing in the melody. Â Variation IV - I make this one a slower, bolder jazz with various triplet patterns on fragments of melody and a strong jazz chord progression based on fifths. Â The lyrics are a tender love story about how throughout our relationship everything is fine as long as I can touch the hand of you. Â In order to emphasize this simple and powerful emotion, for the first verse I simplified the original ballad's thick chords into a more shaped and expressive two part writing, just single notes in each hand; then for the second verse I did a reharmonization of the melody, adding some simple harmony and octaves for the climax; then back to two part for a slower, softer ending. Â I also wrote a new slow introductory section with my own lyrics and melody that is based on what follows. Â An incredibly beautiful piece, this is perfect for any wedding today, whether vintage or modern. The melody is that of the German carol Kling, Glöckchen, but it is paired here with a new English text that is useful all year round, as it omits all references to Christmas, and focusses instead on different kinds of bells (sleigh bells, door bells, clock chimes, music boxes, etc.) and their association with fun and festivity in olden times. The vocal part does not go much beyond the traditional tune, but it offers ample opportunity to work on articulation, diction, expression, agility and dynamic contrast. The accompaniment, though sight-readable by a proficient player, adds a great deal of musical interest and a bit of modernity. Duration: 1'40.
