This collection of seven songs is inspired by Spanish folk and flamenco music. Each song is representative of a different style or genre, including dances, romances, work, and religious and songs. Spain has a long history of folk music dating back to the Middle Ages; a tradition that is still very much alive today. The music has been influenced by many different cultures over the centuries and has been the inspiration for musicians across the world.Songs1.Sevillanas are a type of folk song and associated dance for couples, originating in the nineteenth century. Today they are still very popular, particularly at fiestas and other social events.2.Cabaliño is a Galician work song about a young horse, arranged in the style of a flamenco tango.3. La Petenera is a combination of two songs in very different styles - a flamenco Petenera from AndalucÃa and a Mexican son huasteco, a genre that is noteworthy for its flamboyant and virtuoso violin parts.4. Saetas are religious songs that are performed at Easter (Semana Santa).5.There are many hundreds of versions of the old folk tale Gerineldo, telling the story of love between a Queen and her page boy. This Spanish/Jewish version is over 500 years old, from the time when the Moors ruled over much of the Iberian Peninsula.6.Villancico Asturiano is a traditional Christmas carol from Asturias, combined with a setting of a Christmas poem written in the seventeenth century by Robert Herrick for King Charles II of England.7.The lyrics from La Tarara are drawn from the poem of the same name by the Spanish poet Federico Lorca, who based his poem on a traditional children´s playground song. La Tarara is a mystical woman who dances around the countryside. The music in this version is in the style of a Tanguillo – a type of flamenco dance from Cadiz.

The scattered songs are songs from various collections or individual songs. The two songs composed after Ernst Jandl were written as part of the festivities for the 70th birthday of jazz pianist and composer Dieter Glawischnig. The song composed after Ossip Mandelstamm is part of a cycle of various Russian poems composed for St. Petersburg, the settings of which were commissioned from several composers living in Hamburg. Of the seven orchestral songs composed in 1986 after Attila Jozsef, only the first, fourth, sixth and seventh songs were included in this collection and arranged for voice and piano. The songs before 1985, as well as numerous occasional compositions from the period between 1985 and 2000, have not been published. Some songs, including the two haikus for soprano and piano from 1983 and several chansons, including one for the cabaret artist Sissy Perlinger, have been lost over the years.

It is the fourth of seven songs from his cycle Gypsy Songs (Czech: Cigánské melodie), B. 104, Op. 55. The Gypsy Songs are set to poems by Adolf Heyduk in both Czech and German. This song in particular has achieved widespread fame. The song has been recorded by a number of well-known singers, including Gabriela BeňaÄková, Evan Williams, Gervase Elwes, Nellie Melba, Rosa Ponselle, Jeanette MacDonald, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Victoria de los Angeles, Joan Sutherland, Paul Robeson, Frederica von Stade, Edita Gruberová, Angela Gheorghiu, Magdalena Kožená, and Renée Fleming. The song is also featured on the album Charlotte Church. Fritz Kreisler transcribed the song for violin and piano and performed it frequently. His transcription was first published in 1914. Artists who have recorded instrumental versions of the song include Kreisler himself, Glenn Miller, Julian Lloyd Webber, Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Joshua Bell, and Tine Thing Helseth. The fifty-two songs in this volume are largely by Ronsard and other Renaissance poets of La Pléiade.Although Ronsard is approximately 300 years older than Gouvy, they both seem to have the same interest in classical literature, though, admittedly, for different reasons. Celebrated by the French and English courts, Ronsard (1525-1585) was the leader of La Pléiade: a group of seven poets (Joachim Du Bellay (1522-1560), Rémy Belleau (1528-1577), Étienne Jodelle (1532-1573), Pontus de Tyard (1521-1603), Jean–Antoine Baïf (1532-1589), and Jean Daurat (1508-1588), who dedicated their efforts to writing poetry in French rather than in Latin (or Greek) as most of the Romantic poets did. They wished to enrich the French language, and establish a new literature which would be the equal of the other literature of their period, and the equal to poets of the past. French Romantic poetry featured the closeness of the poet to nature, and his ability to communicate with nature by personifying (anthropomorphizing) all of nature’s elements: flowers, the planets, the moon, the breeze, and even the sand upon the shore. As a significant melodist, Gouvy’s treatment of the vocal solo line and his treatment and development of the piano accompaniment places him in the upper echelons as a composer of songs. His diverse cultural life led a rich and significant musical life, interacting with his contemporaries who admired his work, and whom Gouvy knew well, such as Liszt, Brahms, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Berlioz and Gounod.
