Unfortunately he did not, but in the process of my research I stumbled upon Cesare Pavese, 1908-1950. To know a bit more about this person, I contacted my Italian colleague, Giorgio Rimondi, who is a professor in Ferrara, Italy. Giorgio gave me a nice summary of Pavese's life and work. So I went on Amazon and bought a bilingual book of his poems: Disaffections. The poems that intrigued me the most were the ones he wrote for his paramour, the American model and actress, Constance Dowling. The last poem he wrote before he committed suicide at the age of 41 was dedicated to her: Death will come and will have your eyes. I chose that poem as the anchor of a set of eight poems for the song cycle. 1. Ancora tu sei l'amore 2. To C. from C.*** 3. In the morning you always come back 4. Verrà la morta e avrà i tuoi occhi 5. Passerò per Piazza di Spagna 6. The night you slept 7. I gatti lo sapranno 8. Last blues, to be read some day*** NB: Two of the poems with *** are originally in English. I thought an English setting within a song cycle that is Italian would be a bit jarring. So I asked my friend Giorgio if he could make me an Italian version of the poems. He instead informed me that Italo Calvino had already made a literal translation of those two English poems. So I picked up his Collected Poems in English and French and there I discovered several lovely poems by Paul Éluard, 1895-1952. This led me down the rabbit hole of seeking out Éluard's poems, and there are tons of it.I was especially intrigued by the collection called Mourir de ne pas mourir - Dying of not dying!!! The nine songs after poems by Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) were commissioned by the Dutch mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotijn. Mahler was already planning a late Romantic cantata entitled Das klagende Lied shortly after beginning his studies at the Vienna Conservatory in 1878, for which he conceived a three-part cycle of poems for his own setting. When Mahler completed the score in October 1880, he was already at the beginning of a great conducting career. The quality of the poem could be debated, especially in view of the successful Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen from 1883 and 1884; and yet the ballad, inspired by a mixture of fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm and the poet Ludwig Bechstein, reflects almost the complete range of voices of Mahler's first great creative period, from the songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn to the Fourth Symphony. At the special request of mezzo-soprano Chrisianne Stotijn and pianist Joseph Breinl, the complete text of the plaintive song was newly set to music. A particular challenge of the new setting of Gustav Mahler's poems consisted for me above all in compromising the genial imperfection of the poetry with a compositional aesthetic that emphasizes precisely the unrhymed, edgy and clichéd as its own quality and does not seek to conceal it. In doing so, it seemed wise and prudent to me, not only for reasons of historical distance(ization), not to implement an intersubjective subjectability to the songs. The serious and ballad-like basic tone was to be preserved, the way in which the text was implemented stems from the idea of a thoroughly pluralistic and therefore stylistic tightrope walk, which in a kind of music about music reflects the relationship to one's own tradition and its changing values and thus repeats the phenomenon of Mahler per se in the context of the 21st century.

I set my first Christina Rossetti poem back in 1998 for my song cycle, Love Songs. The poem A Birthday begins with the most delightful set of words, My heart is a like a singing bird ... Looking for something to set for my next song cycle I rediscovered Christina via his brother, the poet and painter, Dante Gabriel Rossetti. IMHO, he is much more brilliant as a painter, and his sister is the true genius poet!!! Christina's father emigrated to England from Italy in 1824. Consequently, all four children (Maria, Dante, William and Christina) spoke Italian at home when they were young. To my delight many of Christina's early poems are in Italian. It is only after my studies at the Juilliard School in 2015 that I decided to set them to music. Each of the songs had to have, like the poems themselves, its distinct style. Accordingly, I came up with the idea of making them - to a certain extent - style studies. In the dedication line under every song title in this edition you will find the name of the composer whose style I gave my best to emulate. The first song, Spleen, is dedicated to Olivier Messiaen. David 2007The songs in my cycle are for voice and piano. They are setting of four poems by Jerry McElveen, Professor Emeritus at Richland College of the Dallas College system. The title refers to texts written during a tour of Italy by a group of college faculty and spouses. On the tour we visited several historic sites around Italy. At the end of the tour, professor McElveen surprised us by reciting a series of poems written during that trip. On hearing his performance, I felt his words were musical and perfect texts to be set to music. The Letters from a Poet in Italy song cycle is the result of our collaboration and has been performed numerous times in the DFW area. A recent performance was sponsored by the art song organization Voces Intimae: the Art of Song. The concert was reviewed by Scott Cantrell Music/Art Critic for the Dallas Morning News and awarded a positive review.  The audio recordings feature soprano Marsha Anderson with my piano accompaniment. Marsha had a distinguished career as an opera singer in Italy for 20 years before returning to Texas as director of the North Lake College Study in Italy program. (She is featured on all recordings except Mvt. III COLOSSEUM. That audio is a synthesizer version).Â

Debussy's Trois Chansons de Bilitis was one of the works we studied in a seminar taught by Professor Earl Kim when I was a graduate student at Harvard University, 1977 to 1981. I then recently discovered that Debussy took twelve of the 158 poems from Pierre Louÿs' Les Chansons de Bilitis and wrote Musique de scéne pour les chansons de bilitis.' The texts in this version is not sung but recited by a narrator accompanied by two flutes, two harps and celesta. The texts in this version is not sung but recited by a narrator accompanied by two flutes, two harps and celesta. My father and mother died a short time later, within months of each other in 2013 and 2014. Finally, in 2017 my 27-year-old nephew died of a drug overdose. This intense period of loss brought and continues to bring about many feelings of regret in addition to so much more. When my nephew died, my son Jonah, developed an intense anxiety about losing us, his parents. I felt compelled to express my feelings, the fear of my own mortality, the anxiety of leaving behind loved ones, combined with words said and unsaid to those lost. “Love letters†is my gift to the six young people I care most about. My music seeks to illuminate these subtle nuances and bring power to their meaning. The harmonic coloring is rich and the melodies are lyrical with an emotional intensity that I believe the vocalist can really embrace.
