Geoff Rod Thomson,(me), while keeping the tune extremely simple(bordering on boring;) decided to experiment with his (dis)chord progressions when writing his accompanying music to this poem. To be honest, and I confess, this piece was just an example of pure self-indulgence with chord experimentation on my part and has next-to-no similarity to my other kid songs so my recommendation unless you're into 'acoustic pain' is to move on to my next C.J.Dennis song.....for those who I haven't scared off, feel free to try it out for yourselves. George Brandon: Two Dream Poems (2020) for Soprano and Piano This piece consists of musical settings of two 20th century poems concerning the dream state: one by the American poet Gary Snyder; the other by Mavash Sabet from Iran. Gary Snyder’s poem, “Maudgalyayana Saw Hellâ€, is a complex and multilayered portrayal of a passage through the dream state, beginning with falling asleep and ending with waking up. At the same time as it describes a mythical journey and an inward psychological journey, it also presents a Buddhist metaphysical perspective in which the whole of life, and our ordinary sense of reality, appear and are questioned as dream states as well. At the time that Mavash Sabet wrote her poem “Hello Again†she was a political prisoner sentenced to twenty years in prison for her religious and educational activities. on behalf of the Bahai faith, a religion which is persecuted by Iran's theocratic government. “Hello Againâ€, from her book Prison Poems, describes a dream experience that renewed her inner sense of freedom despite being incarcerated, and provided her with strength and hope for the future. Alan Bullard's song 'The Solitary Reaper' is printed here in four separate versions, for high voice and piano, or violin, or oboe, or treble recorder/flute. Originally written for soprano and violin, this setting of Wordsworth’s well-known poem has since been performed in three other versions. The lyrical portrayal of a maiden working in the fields, singing 'as if her song could have no ending' inspired the composer to write a delicately flowing setting of the words supported by a 'never-ending' instrumental ostinato. ‘The revelation, when listening to this admirable CD, was the music of Alan Bullard. Published by Maria Thompson Corley (A0.1272498). “Crossing Jordan†grew out of my daughter Kiana’s surprise request that I arrange a spiritual for voice, piano and cello for her senior recital. She received a degree in commercial music the year before COVID shut everything down, at a time before climate change made blizzards an anomaly here in Central PA. As a result, snow days still existed. I spent one of them doing the first draft of “Deep River,†her favorite.Later, I decided that if singers engage a cellist for a concert, they might like to program more than one piece for them, so I chose two more water-themed spirituals to complete the set. “His Name So Sweet†is a more meditative version of the song than I’ve generally heard. I wanted the piano, cello, and briefly the voice to imitate the fountain in the text. The mood is ecstasy, resulting from the fundamental change that baptism is meant to create. “Deep River†also includes “Michael Row The Boat Ashore†and “The Water Is Wide.†The latter isn’t a spiritual, however, taken together the message is that the river is deep, the water is wide, but with (the Archangel?) Michael’s help, Jordan can be crossed. “Wade in the Water†is one of the most well-known spirituals. I focus on the idea of escaping enslavement: the opening is quiet, furtive, maybe even nervous. The Moses in the text can be understood to be Harriet Tubman, who might urge escapees to wade in the water so pursuing dogs couldn’t follow their scent. In my mind, the ending symbolizes that the party has vanished, never to be enslaved again.

I spent one of them doing the first draft of “Deep River,†her favorite.Later, I decided that if singers engage a cellist for a concert, they might like to program more than one piece for them, so I chose two more water-themed spirituals to complete the set. “His Name So Sweet†is a more meditative version of the song than I’ve generally heard. I wanted the piano, cello, and briefly the voice to imitate the fountain in the text. The mood is ecstasy, resulting from the fundamental change that baptism is meant to create. “Deep River†also includes “Michael Row The Boat Ashore†and “The Water Is Wide.†The latter isn’t a spiritual, however, taken together the message is that the river is deep, the water is wide, but with (the Archangel?) Michael’s help, Jordan can be crossed. “Wade in the Water†is one of the most well-known spirituals. I focus on the idea of escaping enslavement: the opening is quiet, furtive, maybe even nervous. The Moses in the text can be understood to be Harriet Tubman, who might urge escapees to wade in the water so pursuing dogs couldn’t follow their scent. In my mind, the ending symbolizes that the party has vanished, never to be enslaved again.

My colleague at North Lake College was an outstanding bass/baritone and a church choir director. He handed me a copy of Wesley's directions for singers...found in many old hymnals...and we both enjoyed good laughs at how accurate the words are to modern congregations. My song is a type of theater presentation...or a short cantata and portrays the contrasting emotions in the text. For example: Sing lustily and with good courage ...singing the songs of Satan! Will be a dramatic high point! But, Wesley's beautiful ending makes a great conclusion. Above all sing spiritually. Have and eye to God in every word you sing Directions requires a good pianist but the voice part doesn't require a huge range. Note: there is a Mezzo Soprano score enclosed.
