George Brandon: Two Dream Poems (2020) for Soprano and Piano This piece consists of musical settings of two 20th century poems concerning the dream state: one by the American poet Gary Snyder; the other by Mavash Sabet from Iran. Gary Snyder’s poem, “Maudgalyayana Saw Hellâ€, is a complex and multilayered portrayal of a passage through the dream state, beginning with falling asleep and ending with waking up. At the same time as it describes a mythical journey and an inward psychological journey, it also presents a Buddhist metaphysical perspective in which the whole of life, and our ordinary sense of reality, appear and are questioned as dream states as well. At the time that Mavash Sabet wrote her poem “Hello Again†she was a political prisoner sentenced to twenty years in prison for her religious and educational activities. on behalf of the Bahai faith, a religion which is persecuted by Iran's theocratic government. “Hello Againâ€, from her book Prison Poems, describes a dream experience that renewed her inner sense of freedom despite being incarcerated, and provided her with strength and hope for the future. Complex but singable, intense and lyrical, these compelling songs will make a great impact in a concert or recital program. Duration: approximately 9 mins. Advanced.

The first of its kind, this is a genuinely playable piano/vocal reduction of Non Monsieur mon mari from Poulenc and Apollinaire's Les mamelles de Tiresias. Sopranos who love this aria no longer need to fear bringing it in for auditions, last-minute performing engagements, or other situations in which the pianist may have to sight-read from the chaotic, poorly notated, and technically demanding vocal score devoid of needed key signatures. Pianists may now enjoy playing this aria comfortably, without risking strain/injury by trying to play reams of excessive 16ths spread out in ways designed for Poulenc's obviously large hands. A few enharmonic respellings in this edition will also provide greater musical understanding for both singers and pianists. This collectionâ??s reductions boast several unique features: 1. No reduction ever requires stretches of over an octave, not including bass notes meant to be held or â??fudgedâ? with the pedal (though octaves may also contain chord tones within them). This reduces the amount of rearranging that smaller-handed pianists must already do. Obviously, further reworkings are to be expected and pianists should feel free to add to or modify what Iâ??ve provided.2. Iâ??ve included less essential, but potentially desirable additional voices/passages in cue-size noteheads so that pianists can easily see them, but know that they are not necessary in a â??sink or swimâ? accompanying situation. Presenting less essential material in cue-size noteheads also reduces visual clutter on the page.3. In addition to the composerâ??s markings, when needed, I have included hints on particular notes to bring out when the singer is likely to need them as a pitch anchor or when it is not obvious which line should be brought out within the texture.4. All page turns have been carefully selected, when possible, so as to result in the least possible disruption to the pianist. When an inevitable page turn precedes a potentially surprising note or chord, Iâ??ve included the next downbeatâ??s notes in cue-size stemless noteheads at the end of the preceding measure.5. I have preserved beams in 8th and smaller note values within the vocal parts so that pianists, some of whom might not be accustomed to syllabic beaming conventions, will find it easier to follow the singerâ??s rhythms while reading potentially unfamiliar arias.6. When known, Iâ??ve noted alternate cuts that singers might like to take within certain arias.7. In some cases Iâ??ve modernized spelling conventions for easier readability (for example, by replacing â??Ã?â? with â??ssâ? in German arias) and enharmonically respelled brief passages or added key signatures for greater clarity.

In these lines, Ikkyu conjures an image that is as perplexing as it is profound. The interplay between the piano and the voice is crafted to reflect the paradoxical imagery of the poem. The music moves through moments of tension and release, mirroring the poem’s journey from perplexity to a serene acceptance of the unknown.This piece is an invitation to explore the spaces between notes, between words, where the essence of understanding might lie.The emotional core of this composition is also deeply personal. It resonates with my own longing for my father, who passed away seven years prior to the creation of this work. Just as Ikkyu's poem reflects a yearning for a connection with the past, this music embodies my own journey of grief, memory, and the search for peace in the echoes of loss. The intertwining of my personal narrative with Ikkyu’s profound words aims to offer a universal contemplation on the themes of absence, longing, and the ephemeral nature of existence.In creating this work, my aim has been to offer not just a musical experience, but a doorway into the profound simplicity of Zen thought. Through the synthesis of voice, piano, and Ikkyu's evocative poetry, we embark on a journey that transcends the mere act of listening, inviting contemplation, and perhaps, a glimpse into the boundless sky of our own perception.

It also described the pain of being unable to travel, and how the need to do so is the destination of every man.Guðfinna Jónsdóttir (1899–1946) from Hömrum was an organist and poet who lived a quiet and isolated life in Northern Iceland. She wrote beautiful poems about her life, filled with with tragedies, death and unrequited love. In her own time her work wasn't well known outside of her hometown, and today she is more or less forgotten.In collaboration with the singer Helga Ragnarsdóttir, the composer Knut Rygnestad has set several of her poems to music for voice and piano, with the aim of making them better known in Iceland and throughout the world. The project received funding from the Norwegian Arts Council and Hljóðritasjóður RannÃs, and an album of nine recorded songs, Ótal stjarna hröp was released in 2023.
