This collection of ballads (six instrumental and ten vocal) was composed over a period of thirty years. I place these works together because the ballad is my favorite genre of song. All the songs are presented in lead-sheet format. The vocal pieces, however, are in addition given in their original arrangements. Some of these songs in the arranged form are not truly jazz inflected. I believe, though, that an inventive pianist may give them a jazz feel using the lead-sheets as blueprints. With some of the vocal works, I have transposed them up in order to make them more comfortable on the keyboard. The arrangements remain in their original keys. The vocal pieces are from either my Dorothy Parker musical, You Might as Well Live (which has been performed by Tony-Award-Winner Michele Pawk and Broadway star Karen Mason) or from a cabaret revue, entitled Somebody Write Me a Song (which has been performed by Tony-Award-Winner Debbie Gravitte and Tony-Nominee Liz Callaway). The vocal pieces are suitable for cabaret performances or audition purposes. The instrumental pieces are designed for jazz performers. The first piece, Anders' Theme, was originally written for sax. The piece was lyricized in English by Larry Kusik into Speak Softly, Love, a popular song released in 1972. The highest-charting rendition of either version was by vocalist Andy Williams, who took Speak Softly Love to number 34 on Billboard magazine's Hot 100. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. We hope you like what we've done to make this beautiful ballad unique!

There is a version for Soprano/tenor and Piano and one for guitar as well. Easy to perform and the text was inspired of the following narrative. I Slaughtered an Orange over the Sink... ...and it just sat there…It didn't say a word, not a sound of anguish, not even when my teeth started to tear apart it's flesh little by little... I knew it was a special orange but I couldn't fathom the magnitude of its character…Even when gentle I took it away from its friends there at the top of the kitchen counter, it looked at me almost with a sense of gratitude. Yes, gratitude.! As if it was saying: Thank you! Thank you for helping me to fulfill the purpose of my life…Since I was a little seed I knew I would serve a higher purpose. My sacrifice will help a human to become a healthier mother, doctor, composer, a better scientist. Yes, I think I felt it said…a better composer as well. ...and there I was, sinking my teeth deep inside its flesh and taking all of what it had to offer. It's life, it's substance, it's gratitude for serving a higher purpose. I slaughtered it over the sink, to avoid any evidence of what had happen there. The remaining outer sell, I placed it on the stove top and lighted up with fire, as my mother use to do, to release the heavenly smell and there it was. Evaporated everywhere! I inhale it, It became totally a part of me. Today, I slaughtered an orange over the sink and I didn’t say thank you! Apostolos Paraskevas is a classical guitarist and composer as well as an award-winning film director and producer. He has received multiple international awards for his compositions and was nominated for a Grammy Award. He is the only guitarist ever to have a major orchestral piece performed at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Lukas Foss––and the only musician who has performed there in a Grim Reaper outfit. He was the founder and served for 16 years as the artistic director of the International Guitar Congress-Festival of Corfu, Greece. He is a voting member of the Recording Academy (Grammys). After his undergraduate music studies in Volos he pursued advanced studies in classical guitar with Costas Cotsiolis (diploma, 1990) and Leo Brouwer (Havana 1984, 1988), as well as postgraduate studies in composition with Lukas Foss and Theodore Antoniou (DMA in composition, Boston University, 1998). Paraskevas embarked on a successful career as a guitar soloist and contemporary composer, achieving distinctions in both disciplines: Grammy nomination for Chase Dance (Bridge Records, 1999); first prize for Night Wanderings (Lukas Foss Composition Competition, 2000); first prize for Phygein Adynaton (National Composers Conference, 1997); and numerous prestigious commissions, performances, and publications. Following teaching posts at Northeastern and Boston Universities, Paraskevas has taught since 2001 at the Berklee College of Music in Boston (professor of composition and classical guitar). His eclectic compositional style arises as an idiosyncratic integration of seemingly conflicting influences – from avant-garde approaches to harmonic structure, form, and timbre, to pop-folk modal and rhythmical concepts – amalgamated into a personal evocative musical language, characterized by rhythmic verve, melodic grace, dramatic (and sometimes unexpectedly humorous) gestures, and ritualistic or theatrical elements. Warren Hatch, written during his undergraduate study at Campbell University. Each movement is distinct, in that each of them is composed in a different form, utilizes different key changes and scales, and takes influence from a different period in classical music. While there is no theme that connects them to one another, they are all in the key of E Major and consist mostly of a waltz-like feeling. III. A Reflection of Passing depicts the shifting aspects about death as a person matures. It’s a piece that came from a time of great loss and much grieving. It begins with an innocent, hopeful understanding of death, followed by a major tone shift, where there is an odd utilization of the piano: the performer sings into the piano while holding down the sustain pedal, which vibrates certain overtones, producing what sounds like a distant choir. The piece closes with a triumphant, hopeful melody, borrowed from a song written by S. Warren Hatch when he was in high school.Composer Notes- Be sure to ensure that the stage hands lift the piano lid before the sonata’s start, as the strings will need to be exposed in order for you to sing into the piano’s body during A Reflection of Passing. For that section (page 22) you will need to face and sing directly into the strings while holding down the sustain pedal for the entire page. If you are playing with the sheet music (don’t worry, I’m not shaming you) simply slide the music holder in order to expose the part of the strings that are closest to you. For this sonata, I encourage you to find your own voice in these pieces. Your own interpretation should align with how you most relate to the message/story they’re telling. This could be using the una corda (leftmost) pedal during lighter sections to further differentiate them, or having a heavier rubato to strengthen the impact of certain phrases. As long as you bring these pieces to life, then it has my stamp of approval.

Pastueño is a song of declaration, a response to the world. Written primarily for those who are moving on in the world to greater things, it is meant to be a true testament to the power which has been instilled in us. The term Pastueño comes from the Andalucian Spanish Flamenco guitar music. Pastueño is a stylistic ability of the player described as slow and peaceful like the calm and fearless bull. We find this slow, calm gate in the repeated open 5ths of the piano. This pulse, along with the extended E minor chord is the underlying tone and driving force of the song. The tenuto and staccato repeats are meant to be imitative of the strumming of a guitar with the syncopation of the RH in the piano. Each articulation given or not given is deliberate and helps to solidify and enhance the imitation of the guitar in the piano line. The vocal line follows a soulful, jazz-inspired melody line that enhances the effect of the Spanish inspired theme. The complicated rhythms and articulations are composed in a manner to help emphasize syllabic stress and expression.

The cabaret-ballad “Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoupâ€, words and music by Anna Sosenko was composed in 1935.  The romantic and bi-lingual lyrics about an English lad who had fallen in love with a Parisian girl became immensely popular with Allied servicemen during WW II.  Sosenko was also the manager of singer-pianist, “the incomparable Hildegarde†(Hildegarde Loretta Sell) who adopted the song as her theme song, and gave it its popularity.  This arrangement is in a simple cabaret ballad style for solo voice and pianist. Some of Carl's writing credits include such songs as Where Do I Begin (the theme from Love Story), but I was unable to find any specific reference to this song - I stumbled across it in an old fakebook I have. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. We also added some pretty cool left-hand fills for your listening (playing?) pleasure - we hope you like what we've done to make this arrangement unique!
