This collection of ballads (six instrumental and ten vocal) was composed over a period of thirty years. I place these works together because the ballad is my favorite genre of song. All the songs are presented in lead-sheet format. The vocal pieces, however, are in addition given in their original arrangements. Some of these songs in the arranged form are not truly jazz inflected. I believe, though, that an inventive pianist may give them a jazz feel using the lead-sheets as blueprints. With some of the vocal works, I have transposed them up in order to make them more comfortable on the keyboard. The arrangements remain in their original keys. The vocal pieces are from either my Dorothy Parker musical, You Might as Well Live (which has been performed by Tony-Award-Winner Michele Pawk and Broadway star Karen Mason) or from a cabaret revue, entitled Somebody Write Me a Song (which has been performed by Tony-Award-Winner Debbie Gravitte and Tony-Nominee Liz Callaway). The vocal pieces are suitable for cabaret performances or audition purposes. The instrumental pieces are designed for jazz performers. The first piece, Anders' Theme, was originally written for sax. This Scripture song based on Psalm 30 verses 4-5 is formatted as a vocal solo (or unison choir) with piano accompaniment (3 staff piano-vocal score). The purchase price includes a 5-page combined score plus a 2-page solo part for VOICE and a 3-page accompaniment score for the PIANO. The lyrics were adapted from the World English Bible (WEB). This verse seems to express the sadness then joy that Jesus’ disciples experienced on the weekend of His crucifixion. Friday was filled with weeping and sorrow as Jesus was nailed to the cross and died, yet Sunday morning, Jesus rose from the dead and though they didn’t believe at first, their hearts were filled with joy as they came to understand that Jesus really was alive! We too can sing praises to the Lord and have joy in the morning because of Jesus’ resurrection. Housman’s poem is about the nature of life, here represented by the cherry tree. The poet feels he does not have enough time to appreciate this beautiful world, because, like all living things, he will die. The first stanza is a description of the cherry tree in its spring-time splendor. It is as 'wearing white for Eastertide as if it is celebrating a religious festival. In the second stanza, the mood shifts from the tree to the poet himself, as he thinks about the inevitability of death. He, a twenty-year old, estimates that he has about fifty years left to live. The final stanza expresses the poet's feeling that fifty more years does not give him enough time to enjoy the beauties of nature. He decides that he will look at the cherry tree not only when it is hung with bloom, but also in winter when it is hung with snow. The poet thus celebrates the beauties of nature in all seasons, but also poignantly laments the inevitable passage from youth to old age and death, the seasons of his own life.I composed this setting of Loveliest of Trees to celebrate the 86th birthday of Joyce Hope Suskind, beloved friend, brilliant musician and composer par excellence.

Accessible Accompaniments is proud to present the first-ever modern-clef performing edition of Pasquale Cafaro’s once enormously popular aria, “Belle luci, che accendete,†from La disfatta di Dario (1756). As noted in Giorgio Sanguinetti’s The Art of Partimento and other sources, this aria was considered the ideal Galant-era (early Classical) example of aria writing in its day, and its theme was even painted onto pottery to be sold to tourists in Naples.While the aria was written for a castrato role, Alessandro, it is ideal for today’s young lyric coloratura sopranos who want to prepare for Mozart roles but wish to wait until they’ve found their mature vocal technique before tackling those roles. Additionally, because this La disfatta di Dario setting is a rarity and singers are unlikely to be hired for this role, it could be sung in transposition by young mezzos and other fachs without causing logistical issues like the need to produce orchestral parts in new keys.Other aspects of this aria that make it a welcome addition to the voice teacher’s library are its widespread orchestral doubling of the vocal line (something that will help students who are still working on intonation and support), its relatively short, Italian-language text for easy memorization and diction acquisition, and its straightforward textual content—it’s a love song. In audition situations, this aria will be enjoyable for panels to hear, and because they will be very unlikely to know the aria, they won’t be able to critique it as closely as they would critique an aria they know well. It should also be sight-readable by an audition pianist of middling skill, another important consideration in choosing audition repertoire.This new edition was engraved using Bernardo Mengozzi’s piano-vocal reduction from 1804, which preserves the soprano clef voice part and is not widely usable today, and I made some corrections to missing accidentals and articulations by cross-checking with the manuscript full score. Both are available at imslp.org. Obviously the words are set in place; they are in worship and service of a specific deity. The music, however, needs to be malleable. Change the rhythm. Change the key. Change the mode. Add sections. Improvise. Here's the thing: when music stays the same and is played exactly the same as it supposedly was in the past, it becomes museum music. Personally, though I've had extensive training in the subject, I can't stand museum music. No matter how pretty or perfectly-played museum music is, it will always have an air of deadness about it. So change this tune, beat it up, deconstruct it, pull it apart and put it together again, because that's what I think the gods would want us to do. In my mind, keeping the tunes alive, flexible, and vital helps us connect with the gods who gave us the ability to create music in the first place.
