Published by Mary Ann Joyce-Walter (A0.989230). Housman’s poem is about the nature of life, here represented by the cherry tree. The poet feels he does not have enough time to appreciate this beautiful world, because, like all living things, he will die. The first stanza is a description of the cherry tree in its spring-time splendor. It is as 'wearing white for Eastertide as if it is celebrating a religious festival. In the second stanza, the mood shifts from the tree to the poet himself, as he thinks about the inevitability of death. He, a twenty-year old, estimates that he has about fifty years left to live. The final stanza expresses the poet's feeling that fifty more years does not give him enough time to enjoy the beauties of nature. He decides that he will look at the cherry tree not only when it is hung with bloom, but also in winter when it is hung with snow. The poet thus celebrates the beauties of nature in all seasons, but also poignantly laments the inevitable passage from youth to old age and death, the seasons of his own life.I composed this setting of Loveliest of Trees to celebrate the 86th birthday of Joyce Hope Suskind, beloved friend, brilliant musician and composer par excellence.

You have written music for our children and for many others, but you’ve never written anything for me†said my bride of (then) 36 years.  Point taken. Whilst she had inspired me and had been a sounding board for many works, I had never dedicated anything to her. In looking for texts which expressed something of the love and admiration I have for my dear lady, I found some beautiful poems by the late Australian poet, John Shaw Neilson. These express emotions which are romantic, whimsical, allegorical, contemplative and more, providing marvellous inspiration.Rejecting the idea of narrative song cycle, I decided each song would tell its own story, naming the grouping Love Stories.So here is is.Throughout, the music is treated in ensemble; the piano does not “accompany†but supports whilst charting its own course.The work was premiered in the 2018 Newcastle Music Festival by Michael Lampard with the composer at the piano.And the dedicatee gave the performers a huge hug onstage at the conclusion of the work!YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-E8lJpMVGE&t=2sÂ

The elements of Romantic love poetry, such as enchanting love and its pain, and the personifying of nature, are fluently described with a great sensitivity in both voice and piano. Gouvy’s melody stir up the imagination because of his special treatment of words through a distinguishable and melodious vocal line, and his story telling and poetic treatment and development of the piano accompaniment. His compositional artistry places him in the upper echelons of art-song composers. One should note that Gouvy had a special fondness for the 16th Century poetry of La Pléiade (a group of Renaissance French poets, led by Pièrre de Ronsard (1524–1585). Desportes was truly the heir to Ronsard; however his work, when compared to that of Ronsard, is filled with greater abstraction and greater fluidity. Desportes seems to avoid any of the passionate anger that is occasionally characteristic of La Pléiade. This may be an indication that Desportes lived in a less distressed time. It also seems necessary to point out that he learned much in his early career by copying and studying the earlier works of La Pléiade. AÌfangastaður (Destination) is a poem about wanderlust, describing the sensation of travelling around and seeing and experiencing new things. It also described the pain of being unable to travel, and how the need to do so is the destination of every man.Guðfinna Jónsdóttir (1899–1946) from Hömrum was an organist and poet who lived a quiet and isolated life in Northern Iceland. She wrote beautiful poems about her life, filled with with tragedies, death and unrequited love. In her own time her work wasn't well known outside of her hometown, and today she is more or less forgotten.In collaboration with the singer Helga Ragnarsdóttir, the composer Knut Rygnestad has set several of her poems to music for voice and piano, with the aim of making them better known in Iceland and throughout the world. The project received funding from the Norwegian Arts Council and Hljóðritasjóður RannÃs, and an album of nine recorded songs, Ótal stjarna hröp was released in 2023.
