The lyrics were written in collaboration with Lori Lieberman after she was inspired by a Don McLean performance in late 1971. The song has been covered by many other artists. In 1973, it became a number-one hit in the United States, Australia and Canada for Roberta Flack, and also reached number six on the UK Singles Chart. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. Take Me Out to the Ball Game is a 1908 Tin Pan Alley song by Jack Norworth and Albert Von Tilzer which has become the unofficial anthem of North American baseball, although neither of its authors had attended a game before writing the song. The song's chorus is traditionally sung as part of the seventh-inning stretch of a baseball game. Fans are generally encouraged to sing along, and at some ballparks, the words home team are replaced with the team name. This arrangement was developed from the original 1908 sheet music, but simplified so that someone of average ability can perform it and sound great doing so! We're all familiar with Willie Nelson's version which was included in his Stardust album and reached No. 3 on the Hot Country Songs chart in 1978 - we have patterned this version after the Willie Nelson cover. This arrangement features a root-based chord-blocking which we kind of morphed into a simple stride that's not too hard to play (like all of our arrangements). Mr. Leslie was born in Stamford, Connecticut in 1885 and published his first song in 1909, starting a long prolific career as a composer and lyricist. He died in 1976. He was a founding member of ASCAP in 1914. Leslie served as its director from 1931 to 1941 and from 1947 to 1953. His most enduring success of the era was probably 1935's Moon Over Miami and For Me And My Gal.
