Published by Cherrywood Editions (A0.1349730). Nightsongs II consists of a series of sketches for voice and piano illustrating nighttime scenes. Odd-numbered movements focus on atmospheric textures, while even-numbered movements dwell on stars and galaxies. Movement I, Vocalise I, is inspired by street lights casting a copper hue against a dark cobalt sky. Movement II, Choose Something Like a Star, shifts between subdued and bright registers of the voice and piano to illustrate the contrast of the stars in the night sky. Movement III, Intermezzo, drives the listener to a country road on a cloudy night with pine trees on either side while the high beams illuminate the path. Frequent 16th notes in this movement create a motor-like motion. Compound meter with quick 16th notes in Movement IV, Returning, imparts a buoyant character that floats through different galaxies along with frequent use of Lydian and Myxolydian Modes and the Acoustic Scale. Movement V, Vocalise II, paints a picture of a hilly grass field and a parking lot on a cloudy and rainy night, surrounded by lights with a muffled glow.

There are recordings available of each of the weeks on all streaming platforms as of November 1, 2024, in case that is helpful to your service preparation or to choirs who are learning the song. This version is in A minor to suit singers with higher voices [the melody extends from D4-D5 for a comfortable soprano range], and has the exact piano accompaniment as well as full melody and lyrics for a soloist or choir. It works well as a solo or congregational song for any autumn or funeral service, featuring the meaningful lyrics of Henry Francis Lyte reminding us of the swiftness of this life, and the hope we have for the life beyond. Also included at the end of the file is a separate printout of both the piano and vocal parts separately for ease of practice and rehearsal.The original hymn was very beautiful but I thought a minor setting would be more fitting for the solemn lyrics, so I wrote an entirely new melody and harmonic arrangement, which can be found on all streaming platforms as well as Youtube, where lyric videos of this and other songs are readily available for church or personal use. Not just a hymn for September and October, I've found myself going back to this song often, as it captures the rich beauty and yet sadness of the autumn season, and still somehow brings comfort amidst the fast-changing seasons of the earth and of our lives. Originally titled “See How Brown Autumn Spreads the Fieldsâ€, this song is so rare that I couldn’t find any music for it online, and therefore wrote a new melody and accompaniment for it that captures the the solemnity and anguish of the lyrics. It’s one of the songs of harvest off of my album entitled “Hymns of Autumnâ€, but doesn’t talk about harvest in the traditional sense we normally sing about these days.Not many talk about the judgement of God in today’s church, and this hymn will send chills down the spine of the most devout believer as we realize the full spectrum of God's character, including His wrath and power on Judgement Day. I found this in an old hymnal that was so old that the “Sâ€s were still written as “Fâ€s, and I had to squint to read it while learning to sing for this recording. I had a very difficult time recording it without being moved to tears over and over, and I pray it will reach many in need of comfort, being of service to anyone who is looking for a Christian, Biblical funeral hymn for a memorial service or a celebration of life service.
