It was popularized by Bing Crosby, and was the first recording under his Brunswick Records contract. He recorded it on March 30, 1931 and it became his first number one hit as a solo artist. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. We tossed in what we think are some pretty sweet left-hand fills, also. It's not too hard and sounds great as-written, but feel free to make it your own!

This song tells a story about Alfonso XII, King of Spain from December 1874 until his death in November 1885. It is a song tale known in many Latin American countries. As is typical of folk songs, there are many popular variations and additional verses. English translation: Where are you going, Alfonso XII? Where are you going so sadly? I am looking for Mercedes because I lost her yesterday. Mercedes is already dead, and it's true because I saw her. Four dukes carried her through the streets of Madrid. I was praying to be aware of God’s presence as I began my day. As I meditated on God’s presence, the words of this song began to come to mind. I pulled to the side of the road, found an old envelop, drew a staff and began writing. ♫ We are told the heavens cannot contain God; God is spirit; and there is nowhere we can go to escape His presence. Thus, every inhabitant on earth is continually within God’s physical presence. On the other hand, we are urged to ‘come into His presence.’ Also, Christ’s presence is continuously available to us through the presence of the Holy Spirit. Experiencing the presence of God is an act of the will, an act of faith. Remembering and experiencing His presence is life changing for everyday life. We are in His presence at work and school, at the market and while we are driving, in sorrow and in pleasure, in danger and in peace. ♫ I think of God’s presence when I lap swim. I cannot float in the air, but I can float in water.
