The Bible abounds in figures of speech such as simile (comparison using like or as), metaphor (comparison not using like or as), synecdoche (using a part for the whole), deliberate hyperbole [obvious exaggeration], verbal irony (the tone of voice tells that the speaker means the opposite of the words he or she is using), personification (attributing human features or feelings to animals or inanimate objects), anthropomorphism / anthropopathism (gives human attributes, feelings to God.) [or animals, inanimate objects, cartoon characters.] ♫ God is spirit. (John 1:18, John 4:24) He is infinite, eternal, invisible, undetectable. The humanlike descriptions of God are actually figures of speech that help us understand and identify with Him. Descriptions of God’s eyes, arms, feet, wings, etc. are all figures of speech that tell us God is present everywhere, sees everything, hears everything, and cares about every part of his creation. (God is imminent). ♫ The heavens, even the highest heavens cannot contain Him. (2 Chronicles 2:6, 6:18) God is separate from the universe. (God is transcendent.) Scientific measurements cannot detect Him because He is not in the universe, the universe is in Him. ♫ Just as you can feel your fingers and your toes at the same time, God knows what is happening in every atom of the universe simultaneously. A new Christmas carol by Philip Le Bas for unison voices (with occasional divisi) and piano, setting the words of William Blake's poem A Cradle Song from his collection entitled Songs of Innocence. The very title of Blake's poem calls out for it to be set to music. Indeed the poem is a straightforward lullaby for the first few stanzas, sung softly by a mother over her sleeping baby, as she marvels at the wonder of this beautiful infant and expresses her love for the child. Her own anxieties and weeping for the child remind her of the Christ-child who also wept as a vulnerable baby. But as God incarnate he wept for me, for thee, for all, and brought peace to heaven and earth. (Blake uses the word beguile perhaps to indicate the paradoxical nature of a weeping God bringing redemption to a suffering world by becoming a vulnerable human baby himself.) The composition aims to avoid unnecessary complexity in the vocal parts, so that it can be sung easily particularly by a parish choir. However, it also attempts to capture some of the beauty, drama and mystery of the scene expressed by Blake. The piece begins and ends in stillness, and there are gentle climaxes here and there, reflecting some of the rise and fall of the poem's lyrics. Unfortunately he did not, but in the process of my research I stumbled upon Cesare Pavese, 1908-1950. To know a bit more about this person, I contacted my Italian colleague, Giorgio Rimondi, who is a professor in Ferrara, Italy. Giorgio gave me a nice summary of Pavese's life and work. So I went on Amazon and bought a bilingual book of his poems: Disaffections. The poems that intrigued me the most were the ones he wrote for his paramour, the American model and actress, Constance Dowling. The last poem he wrote before he committed suicide at the age of 41 was dedicated to her: Death will come and will have your eyes. I chose that poem as the anchor of a set of eight poems for the song cycle. 1. Ancora tu sei l'amore 2. To C. from C.*** 3. In the morning you always come back 4. Verrà la morta e avrà i tuoi occhi 5. Passerò per Piazza di Spagna 6. The night you slept 7. I gatti lo sapranno 8. Last blues, to be read some day*** NB: Two of the poems with *** are originally in English. I thought an English setting within a song cycle that is Italian would be a bit jarring. So I asked my friend Giorgio if he could make me an Italian version of the poems. He instead informed me that Italo Calvino had already made a literal translation of those two English poems. My father and mother died a short time later, within months of each other in 2013 and 2014. Finally, in 2017 my 27-year-old nephew died of a drug overdose. This intense period of loss brought and continues to bring about many feelings of regret in addition to so much more. When my nephew died, my son Jonah, developed an intense anxiety about losing us, his parents. I felt compelled to express my feelings, the fear of my own mortality, the anxiety of leaving behind loved ones, combined with words said and unsaid to those lost. “Love letters†is my gift to the six young people I care most about.
