Donuts, if you make a mistake!The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.· Choose a tempo.· Choose a dynamic.· Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!Enjoy!

In 1853 Charles Czerny took this polka tune and created a piano etude as part of his set Amusement des Juenes Amateurs. I have taken some of his themes and adapted and arranged them for instrumental solo. I have assembled them into a Rondo form: Intro-A-B-A-C-A-D-A-Coda. It is an etude (study) to sharpen your playing of scales, arpeggios, melodic interval leaps, and various articulations. But it doesn't at all sound like an exercise because of the playful nature of the polka. This dramatic piece shows your technical accomplishments while delivering a crowd pleasing tune with great flourish.I have marked it as Intermediate in difficulty as a general average. The notes and rhythms are Easy, the quick Tempo makes it Early Intermediate, and the range which is a half step beyond a full 2 octaves makes it Advanced Intermediate for some instruments.3 pages, 1:45 minutesTemporary recording of piano playing instrument part.

Published by Indie Classical Publications (A0.971795). VALOR is one of my very early compositions, yet it remains one of my favorites I have composed to this day. When writing this, I was trying to capture this sense of emotional struggle that we all face at times. The title is a metaphor for the feeling of being intimidated and overwhelmed by the difficulties we face in life, and making the choice of accepting them and trying to work through them. Often times I think people tend to shy away from their problems rather than addressing them. This work is meant to reflect those emotions when we must have some courage. Like most of my works, this is not written intentionally to indicate a specific form, but it does follow an ABA form. The performers may express some rubato throughout, as it is encouraged in this piece. Originally for Horn & Piano, this version is for the Alto Saxophone & Piano. Difficulty: grade 4 (intermediate).

Jörg Widmann, an internationally sought-after soloist and professor of clarinet at the Freiburg Musikhochschule, displays the exquisite refinement of contemporary clarinet sound in 'Fünf Bruchstücke' (already published) for clarinet and piano (KLB 54) and in the present 'Fantasie' for solo clarinet. While noise, as a means of expression, is given much attention in 'Fünf Bruchstücke', 'Fantasie' is largely based on the usual Romantic melodious sound, though this time with ironic side trips into dance, klezmer and jazz music, the clarinet's equivalent of light music. 'Fantasie' for solo clarinet is my first real piece for my own instrument, the clarinet. With its eccentric virtuosity and its cheerful, ironic fundamental character, it reflects the experience with Stravinsky's 3 Pieces for solo clarinet of 1919 and the tonal innovations which did not appear in music before Carl Maria von Weber's notation for the clarinet, and takes them further in a new way. It is a little imaginary scene uniting the dialogues of different people in close proximity in the spirit of the commedia dell'arte. - Jörg Widmann ...on the interpretation: It would be important to take the title completely literally – which is why the performer should of course play the piece with imagination. The most important information on the structure: the complete absence of bar lines – whenever the piece is played to me by students or other persons, I am always pleased about the player's own ideas and about the fact that the musical text is taken literally and seriously, with all its dynamic and articulation marks, and yet filled with life and imagination. What I always notice, however, is that the rhythmic fast pulse part is often played like an étude, rather than with imagination. What is most important to me, personally, is to take pleasure in making tonal distinctions, even despite the strict timing. The composition is in three movements with each titled after a different period in Thailand history. The piece is loosely programmatic as it tries to capture the general mood of each era, rather than specific events. I. Sukhothai (The Dawn of Happiness) This movement reflects the ideal state, a land of plenty, and is peaceful. II. Ayutthaya This movement reflects a period of wealth that is characterized by wars with Burma. III. The Chakri Dynasty This movement reflects the more hectic pace of modern society where Thailand moves from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy. Folk music of Thailand is built on a seven-note scale of equal intervals. The fourth and seventh notes of this scale are often used only for ornamental purposes. In order to approximate this scale, a pentatonic scale is used as it is like a major scale with the fourth and seventh tones removed. The pre-recorded sounds approximate some of the instruments traditionally used in Thai folk music.
