Published by Slide Ride (A0.784330). 1 Octave Scale Studies in 15+ keys for 4-part ensembles of like or mixed instruments If this is your first exposure to these scale studies, you are in for a treat! Donuts, if you make a mistake!The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.· Choose a tempo.· Choose a dynamic.· Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!Enjoy!

Every single morning when my wife wakes up, our cat Zeus comes to her and starts his massage routine (yes, we have a cat that does massages.) When he’s in the middle of his routine he always purrs, as many cats do. One day he changed the time of his routine and instead of doing in in the morning, he came to our bed when we were almost sleeping. When he started purring, I was impressed by the sense of relaxation I was getting from that sound and I decided to use it in my next composition.I came across an investigation of Dr. Karen Mccomb, a professor at the University of Sussex, London who also appeared on the documentary The Lion in your Living Room (available at Netflix) According to Dr. Mccomb, cats have two different types of purrs, the first type is for when our feline friends want something from us (solicitation purr) and the other one when they’re just relaxing (non-solicitation purr). I divided the piece into two movements, accompanied by a prerecorded tape. Visit www.juancarlosguerra.com to learn more about the piece.The first movement (Solicitation Purr) is for when cats are demanding for action, the saxophone creates effects while the tape accentuates this idea. Multiple cats joined this movement with their particular meows. The second movement (Non-solicitation Purr) is more relaxing and lyric for the soloist.

Lennon ended up writing this classic that perfectly fit the proposed objective, as the song's message of love could be easily interpreted around the world.The Beatles were broadcast live directly from Abbey Road Studios on June 25, 1967. The Beatles invited several friends to participate in the event, singing the song's chorus, including Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, Marianne Faithfull, Keith Moon and Graham Nash . The program was seen by around 350 million people and was responsible for further immortalizing the Beatles' name in the History of Humanity.

Sol-etudes are a set of 4 etudes for Alto Saxophone Solo. These pieces were purposely designed to be intense and challenging for the soloist. It was my intention to write something that would hone the players skills as well as be a meaningful piece of music. These are times of isolation, and public performance is practically nonexistent. This is also a time when a lot of practicing can get done! That said, the saxophonist should seek solace in the fact that, with a solo piece such as this, and a little imagination, they can be both the soloist and ,in a way, the audience. Hopefully, come the time public performance is again normalized, one may consider sol-etudes for public recitals and for studio study.

Samba de Uma Nota Só is a song with music by Tom Jobim and lyrics by Newton Mendonça. The English lyrics, One Note Samba, were written by Jobim. Its title refers to the main line of the melody, which first consists of a long series of notes played in the same key, in the rhythm of bossa nova (usually D, played in key of G). The first eight bars consist of D, followed by four bars of G, and finally four bars of D. Then there are four bars of more varied melody. The song became well known after reaching a wide audience through the 1962 Grammy-winning bossa nova album Jazz Samba (Getz / Byrd / Jobim), which reached number one on the Billboard 200 in 1963.
