Mika's hit from 2007 is an exuberant (and at times petulant) critique of the way the music industry seeks out individuality and talent, then insists on working it over into safely commercial products. (Of course, that he had such success with it suggests that things aren't quite as bad as the song makes out.) But the song also works as a more general statement about everyone's personal stand against the tyranny of our peers' expectations.The original has a very rangy melody, which carries a considerable variety of vocal characterisation. The arrangement unfolds this onto the four different parts, each taking on certain aspects of the line's mercurial identity. Sharing the melody's vocal demands around does not necessarily make either the characterisation or the ranges easier, however, since it also means that every part is switching between lead and accompanying roles, at times quite quickly. So it needs generous ranges, quick-wittedness and - above all - performative swagger to carry it off.There is space for the snippets of dialogue from the original track; but whether (and how much) to use it would depend on the performance situation. My own feeling would be that the middle one ('getting angry won't solve anything') works just fine slotted in between the verses, but that the snippets at start and end would need more setting up to make sense to an audience unfamiliar with Mika's recording.N.B. This arrangement has been donated by her partner for publication by LABBS on SMP so that SSAA a cappella groups can experience the joy of this arrangement.This arrangement is NOT suitable for barbershop contest, as the harmony parts are frequently performing non-homorhythmically with neutral syllables, to give a huge hit of big band flavour.The arrangement is predominantly in the barbershop style (melody in the inner voice) but at times the melody gets passed around the other parts too, so everyone gets a turn!With an extended vocal instrumental intro, it would be suitable for a show where a spoken intro overlays the first 30 seconds or so (once the speech is planned, some bars can be repeated as many times as needed to accommodate).For those unfamiliar with the song, look up Clare Teal's performance on YouTube from her album Don't Talk. The White Rosettes sought to capture its escalation of of emotional impact as the vocal range shifted and the orchestration developed through the narrative of a dystopic vision.A cappella voices can capture that sense of build through layering of different sizes of ensemble. And, whilst their timbral palette is more limited than the instrumentation Disturbed could draw on, they have the power of harmony to add colour and impact.The arrangement is built around two main harmonic ideas: juxtaposing minor chords and key areas a third apart, and the dissonance of the melodic major 2nd and minor 3rd rubbing up against each other. Between them they create an atmosphere that hangs heavy with portent and mystery, echoing and amplifying the emotional tone of the lyrics.N.B.
