This setting of the traditional Scottish song of farewell is designed as an 8-part arrangement that male and female quartets or choruses can sing together to finish a joint performance, as well as two separate 4-part arrangements for the respective groups to use when they're not sharing the stage. It was conceived to address the 'cost-per-wear' problem of special occasion pieces that only get performed occasionally but still need rehearsing to the same standard as the rest of the set.This is the setting for women's voices, in which the melody is taken for the most part by female leads, then handed off to the basses for the 3rd phrase of each verse. The first verse is homophonic, while the second explores a variety of melody+accompaniment textures before restoring the harmonic texture to introduce a tag that blossoms out from unison.The versions for men's voicing and combined voicings are also available for purchase.N.B. Published by Keep Calm and Keep Singing (A0.843718). A fishing song from the North East of England, this became popular as the theme tune to 1970’s TV show When the Boat Comes In. However, there is also another melody (in the minor key) also believed to originate from the North East but which was collected by Cecil Sharp in Berkshire. I have combined both melodies giving one to the sops and the other to the altos. Each section then forms an ostinato accompaniment while the other is singing the tune. These “Dance†“Sing†notes although written as dotted minims are to be performed short and light – like bells. The song also works best with a slight northern accent – particularly the short northern ‘a’ vowel on the word Dance and in the phrase “When the boat comes inâ€. NB Although this is written for 4 parts the second alto is optional and the arrangement works just as well without it for SSA choirs. Matteo wrote the Italian and additional English lyrics for this recording, in collaboration with Fortunato Zampaglione. As the song develops the melody splits into 3 and then 4 part harmony, with the tune taken by different parts here and there. Soprano 1s have a soaring descant over the tune towards the end. The lyrics are in a confessional style, while there's a theme of self-determination in the metaphorical ladder of the refrain... The song features on Paula Cole's debut album Harbinger (1994) and runs the gamut of emotions from the urgent, unaccompanied opening strains and melancholy of the verses – to the striving, optimistic, melodic refrain and the joyous climax with divided voices. The original main vocal melody is given to the first sopranos, with the rest of the choir offering a gentle, rhythmicised ah accompaniment in the verses. The crunchy chords and occasional dissonances of the original are dramatised and intensified by the live choral setting. The piano part often operates independently, providing harmonic and rhythmic support and a robust bass in louder passages. No sheet music was originally issued with the song – perhaps because of the richly detailed texture of the women's backing voices – and this arrangement by David M. Hoyle represents the first commercially-available transcription/arrangement.
