A super-jazzy arrangement of this uptempo swing song as sung by Clare Teal, this is one that is fiendishly challenging, but worthy of an attempt by established SSAA a cappella groups who are experienced and confident with the swing genre. The arranger, the late Jen Mills, was an accomplished jazz musician as well as a barbershop singer and LABBS Music Judge. This arrangement has been donated by her partner for publication by LABBS on SMP so that SSAA a cappella groups can experience the joy of this arrangement.This arrangement is NOT suitable for barbershop contest, as the harmony parts are frequently performing non-homorhythmically with neutral syllables, to give a huge hit of big band flavour.The arrangement is predominantly in the barbershop style (melody in the inner voice) but at times the melody gets passed around the other parts too, so everyone gets a turn!With an extended vocal instrumental intro, it would be suitable for a show where a spoken intro overlays the first 30 seconds or so (once the speech is planned, some bars can be repeated as many times as needed to accommodate).For those unfamiliar with the song, look up Clare Teal's performance on YouTube from her album Don't Talk. It is ambiguous as to whether the song is celebrating these qualities or warning us about them, but it certainly refuses to accept hypocrisy on the matter.The arrangement casts the song as a barbershop contest up-tune, and taking harmonic risks that not so many years ago would have been seen as playing with stylistic fire in the BHS system (and probably would still be in SAI as of the time of writing in 2018). Texturally, though, it remains predominantly homophonic so as to let Teal's sparkling lyrics through.It demands sizzling rhythmic skills and an up-for-it attitude, and delivers an exciting ride for singers and audience alike.N.B. Published by Awelia Music (A0.1290533). From the arranger: I first came across this traditional English folk ballad on the podcast mini-series “Dolly Parton’s Americaâ€. Dolly’s version was fast-based and up-beat, but the melody struck me as distant yet clear, mournful yet timeless. When I could not find a version that let the voice further explore these qualities, I made my own. The first exists on my record (WALLFLOWER by Aerhart), the second as a live solo act accompanied by a Yamaha Reface CS Synth, and the third as a Silver Dagger choral arrangement, made with and for the Young New Yorker's Chorus Treble Ensemble. The original Silver Dagger tune is a haunting memory in its spirit as much as its history (its many possible origins trace back to the early 1800s). To this day, we wonder whether it’s love, fear or both that sway our overprotected heroine’s decision to “sleep alone all of my life.†Despite her careful consideration, the melody never grants the finality of her decision. This arrangement holds this dissonance within a meditative space - a small moment of stillness in which to let all the big thoughts and emotions come and go. We begin with the memory of the melody, gather momentum and clarity in its pulsing visceral storytelling, then release it, unresolved yet somehow changed.

The Hawaiian music craze  began at the Hawaiian Pavilion at San Francisco's Panama–Pacific International Exposition in 1915. The  music craze was responsible for the the biggest sale of ukeleles in history. Sears Roebuck bought the  Harmony guitar company to make ukuleles and cashed in on the craze. It has been has been covered  dozens of times by celebrity artists world wide, and has been heard in many movies and television shows.  It has been called one of the 50 Greatest Songs of Hawaii.  The little grass shack of the title does not refer to a real location. The popularity of the song led  to the opening of a gift shop in Kona called The Little Grass Shack.
